Pickpick

So it seems the books that best fit my mood right now are very introspective and philosophise about family and relationships. I loved this. I think @Cathythoughts put this on my radar years ago!
Hartmann and Fibich were orphans evacuated from Germany in WW2. We meet them as old men examining their lives. Although opposites in temperament and outlook they have been bonded in friendship, leant upon each other for life. ⬇️

Centique Brookner has a way of examining small lives and weaknesses as well as strengths while giving her characters dignity and purpose. Although a lot of this book is about coping with depression, it is ultimately hopeful. Do be aware there is no plot or excitement, it really is like a psychological study of friends and family. ⬇️ 3y
Centique The sculpture in the background is from our naval museum - depicting a WW2 catastrophe at sea. (Not happy but befitting!) 3y
EvieBee I just love Anita. She‘s so quietly loud. 3y

LeahBergen What a lovely review. I‘m feeling the urge for an Anita Brookner in my near future. 😁 3y
Soubhiville Wow that sculpture gives me chills. 3y
Centique @EvieBee what a perfect way to describe her! 😍 3y
Centique @LeahBergen thank you Leah. I think Brookner and Pym have become my quiet book saviours for dark times. They give me that light breaking through 🌤 3y
Centique @Soubhiville me too - it‘s so sad and it‘s right at the end of walking through all this WW2 memorabilia in a quiet contemplative space. 3y
Cathythoughts Yes I remember loving this one … I‘ve always felt like a bit of a ‘ latecomer‘ myself… such a poignant story ❤️ 3y

A quote from Latecomers. Anita Brookner fast becoming one of my favorite writers. A story of two young men , sent to London from Berlin as refugees in the war. Who become close friends , grow old together with their wives & children. So beautifully written & read by Andrew Sachs.

I‘m loving this book
1. Andrew Sachs is a a seriously good narrator ( I‘ve only ever known him ( and loved him) in Fawlty Towers ) such gravitas in his reading.
2. The way She writes ( for me ) is as if you were sitting by your fireside, or by a window, or a place in nature... & you have become hypnotized by your life & memories... she is so good ....
so good 💫

Centique I loved her Hotel du Lac so I must read this. I think she could become one of my favourite authors too 😍 6y
Cathythoughts @Centique she really is one of my favorites now ... it all seems so easy as you read , but my god , she hits the mark 👍🏻❤️really deeply enjoying her 6y

Next up Latecomers... a different style of story from Anita Brookner & read by Andrew Sachs , who seems a perfect choice considering his own history, as the characters in the book are young Jews when they escape Nazi Germany ...

ephemeralwaltz Sounds good :) 6y
Cathythoughts @ephemeralwaltz it does sound good 👍🏻😉 6y

wanderinglynn If you like urban fantasy (one of my fave genres too), I recommend Patricia Briggs‘s Mercy Thompson series, which starts with 7y

Argh, I've felt frazzled all day after oversleeping and missing my train to go to the city for training at the Victorian State Library where I've just got a volunteer job. Now I'm exhausted but still on edge. I HATE being late!! Need to relax and read but can't focus on the page.
Anyone else had one of those days today?

Samplergal Yesterday I dropped too many things to count. I ended up not cooking dinner because of it. Some days are simply difficult. Hang in there. 7y
jenniferw88 Yep... my drs test didn't go well. 7y
Joanne1 @jenniferw88 oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Oversleeping is really no biggie in the scheme of things. Sending you all the good thoughts. 7y

Joanne1 @Samplergal yep done that too. Dropping dinner as your getting it out of the oven with a family begging to be fed is a terrible thing. 7y
Eyelit I‘ve had one of those weeks! Ugh. I hope it gets better for you! 🍀💜 7y
ChamomileAndCupcakes Congrats on the volunteer possie! Hope it‘s great 🙃🙃🙃 📚 📚📚 7y
