We'll Always Have Casablanca: The Life, Legend, and Afterlife of Hollywoods Most Beloved Movie
We'll Always Have Casablanca: The Life, Legend, and Afterlife of Hollywoods Most Beloved Movie | Noah Isenberg
9 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
For the 75th anniversary of its premierethe incredible story of how Casablanca was made and why it remains the most beloved of Hollywood films. Casablanca was first released in 1942, just two weeks after the city of Casablanca itself surrendered to American troops led by General Patton. Featuring a pitch-perfect screenplay, a classic soundtrack, and unforgettable performances by Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and a deep supporting cast, Casablanca was hailed in the New York Times as a picture that makes the spine tingle and the heart take a leap. The film won Oscars for best picture, best director, and best screenplay, and would go on to enjoy more revival screenings than any other movie in history. It became so firmly ensconced in the cultural imagination that, as Umberto Eco once said, Casablanca is not one movie; it is movies. Well Always Have Casablanca is celebrated film historian Noah Isenbergs rich account of this most beloved movies origins. Through extensive research and interviews with filmmakers, film critics, family members of the cast and crew, and diehard fans, Isenberg reveals the myths and realities behind Casablancas production, exploring the transformation of the unproduced stage play into the classic screenplay, the controversial casting decisions, the battles with Production Code censors, and the effect of the wars progress on the movies reception. Isenberg particularly focuses on the central role refugees from Hitlers Europe played in the production (nearly all of the actors and actresses cast in Casablanca were immigrants). Finally, Isenberg turns to Casablancas long afterlife and the reasons it remains so revered. From the Marx Brothers 1946 spoof hit, A Night in Casablanca, to loving parodies in New Yorker cartoons, Saturday Night Live skits, and Simpsons episodes, Isenberg delves into the ways the movie has lodged itself in the American psyche. Filled with fresh insights into Casablancas creation, production, and legacy, Well Always Have Casablanca is a magnificent account of what made the movie so popular and why it continues to dazzle audiences seventy-five years after its release.

#tlt #threelistthursday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) Ingrid Bergman (isn‘t Casablanca the best??)
2) Maggie Smith (ahhh, Downton Abbey)
3) Elizabeth Taylor (those violet eyes, I loved her in National Velvet; and my grandpa met her when he changed her tire when she had a flat in Marfa, Texas when she was filming Giant. She went on to bigger and better things and Grandpa did, too. He eventually became mayor of Marfa. 😊

TheBookHippie I agree Elizabeth Taylor!!! ♥️♥️ 7mo

#AutumnPlease #scarf Ingrid Bergman was just iconic in Casablanca. The scarf with the white coat is stunning. I live in Az. Love scarves but unless I travel to cooler climates in the fall or winter , no cause to wear them.I still have a collection of them though.

Eggs Beautiful 🤍🧣🖤 I have a collection too but it‘s so hot here (TX) 14mo

Pickpick

This is a pick mostly because I‘m a fan. The book was a bit dry and repetitive. There was nothing earth shattering or new. I watched the movie twice while reading it. I think I love it a little more. Here‘s lookin‘ at you, Casablanca. ❤️#setinHollywood #booked2020

I hate saying “bad,” but this book was. The part of it that focused on the immigrant-actors who made up much of Casablanca‘s supporting cast was interesting but not news, and the chapters about long-term critical response were a failed attempt at high-mindedness.

If you know anything about Casablanca, this book is not insightful. If you don‘t know anything about it, watch the movie (!!) and read Aljean Harmetz‘s Round Up the Usual Suspects. ⭐️⭐️

Pickpick

A good solid history of the origin, making of, success of, and continuing life of one of the best Hollywood movies. Isenberg is especially good when describing the lives of the European refugees who played in the film and made it's atmosphere more real. Too narrow in scope for a reader looking for history of studio-era Hollywood. But a good book for a fan of the movie.

Closing out 2016 with one of the greatest films ever...and it's about standing up to totalitarianism. How could that be appropriate? 🤔 As an added bonus, they had advance copies of this February release about it - which was written by a professor/mentor of mine! A great end to the year! Healthy New Year's to all my #favoritelittens ! May we all read more than our expectations, and may the books we read shape and change us all. #nye #newyears
