"Evens is the finest ambassador for Belgian illustration since Herg." --The Guardian Brecht Evens, the award-winning author of The Wrong Place and The Making Of, returns with an unsettling graphic novel about a little girl and her imaginary feline companion. Iconoclastic in his cartooning and page layouts, subtle in his plotting, and deft in his capturing of the human experience, Evens has crafted a tangled, dark masterwork. Christine lives in a big house with her father and her cat, Lucy. When Lucy gets sick and dies, Christine is devastated. But alone in her room, something special happens: a panther pops out of her dresser drawer and begins to tell her stories of distant Pantherland, where he is the crown prince. A shape-shifter who tells Christine anything she wants to hear, Panther begins taking over Christine's life, alienating her from her other toys and friends. As Christine's world spirals out of control, so does the world Panther has created for her. Panther is a chilling voyage into the shadowy corners of the human psyche. The Drawn & Quarterly edition of Panther is an extended "director's cut," featuring additional material not included in the original book.

Um… wtf did I just read? I picked this up from the library because of the gorgeous cover (flipping through I was intrigued by the art).
I read this last night and I‘m still pondering. It‘s deeply unsettling and what I thought I was getting (young girl creates imaginary friend to cope with loss of a pet) was absolutely not the case.
This book should def come with a bunch of content warnings… and that ambiguous ending, ugh.
Love the art tho.

This book (graphic novel? fairy tale? art exhibit?) is mesmerizingly beautiful. A little girl loses her beloved pet cat and thus begins to retreat into an imaginary (are we sure about that?) world led by a charismatic panther, but her dreams soon take a dark turn. If you‘re not into the story, then pick up the book just to gaze at Brecht Evens‘ gorgeous watercolor illustrations.

I delved into this book completely blind. I'd never read any Brecht Evens before, and only picked it up as a recommendation from my librarian. It defied all my expectations! Without giving too much away, the story slowly evolves in disturbing ways and you learn that the characters are not all what they seem to be. The limited color pallette is brilliant and Evens easily manages to evoke both whimsy and disgust.

Such a cool #creepy #sinister book. Love the author's use of #color and the drifting tone of the story.

Whimsy meets nightmare in this Belgian graphic novel for adult readers. It's breathtaking, absurd, peculiar, visionary, grotesque, ornate and bizarre. It totally creeped me out and I loved it.

The further you get into this tale about a grieving child, the darker and creepier and scarier it becomes.

Are you the little girl I heard crying?
- Um... yes.
What's troubling your heart, my child?

Wow. I really don't know how to respond to this book. Gripping, horrifying, and fantastic artwork. I cannot "pick" this book because the content is just too disturbing. I would not willfully walk into a book with this content. And yet, wow. Brecht Evens really does something incredible here. I know this is vague, but I want to avoid spoilers. I went into it not knowing the content and it made this more powerful. Proceed with caution.

Panther is a beautiful, funny, stirring, and intensely creepy comic about a young girl and a seductive monster. It is the Cat in the Hat by way of Kafka with the dualism of Lolita's Humbert and Quilty. #weird #disturbing #unforgettable #comics

Deeply unsettling, but also incredibly powerful and beautiful. This one is going to stick in my gut for a long time. I'm so glad @Liberty talked about "Panther" on "All the Books." I love graphic novels but I don't think I would have come across this one on my own.
