Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 (Anniversary)
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 (Anniversary) | Hunter S Thompson
From the legendary journalist and creator of Gonzo journalism Hunter S. Thompson comes the bestselling critical look at Nixon and McGovern s 1972 presidential election. Forty years after its original publication, "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 "remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson s searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidency from the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixon is infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism ("The New York Times"). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 "is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better than any other book ever written."

Lord help me, it‘s an Audible $5 sale… 30 minutes of scrolling later and I have 13 books in my cart. Never mind the 7 still on my TBR from the last one, my dozen available credits here and on Libro.fm, and my library hold list… it‘s fine. It‘s all fine. Everything is totally under control!

PhyllisH I‘ve only been tempted by three , so far. 😁. It‘s a great sale. 3y
fredthemoose Oooh, @PhyllisH which ones?? 3y
PhyllisH James Herriot‘s Treasury for Children
Knitlandia
The Delight of Being Ordinary

Audible continues to tempt us with such wonderful sales😁.

Having grown up in a time when the White House press corps seems more concerned with maintaining their access to senior officials than asking difficult questions (minus a brief pause during the Trump years, when such access carried no cachet), it's incredible to read something like this. Granted Thompson was iconoclastic even for his time, but it's still refreshing to be transported to an era when the press weren't all sycophants.

I love Ralph Steadman's illustrations but half a century later some of them just make me go
"What... Is going on here?"

This book is considered essential reading for reporters covering the American presidential election; intending this to be his only excursion to the campaign trail, Thompson pulls no punches and doesn't fear burning bridges to deliver how he sees American politics to work. Without the cynical insights of this book, I wouldn't be able to comprehend the last four years of American electoral politics, or politics as a whole.

Remember when we thought Nixon was America's worst ever president? That was a happy time, wasn't it?

Probably the most famous (infamous) Colorado author, Hunter S. Thompson is an iconic character and the founder of the gonzo journalist movement.
Although most people think of the OTHER fear and loathing when they think of Thompson, Campaign Trail ‘72 is my favorite.
Two of his favorite books are: The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway, and The Great Gatsby. #agameoffavorites @ErinSueG

🚀Hunter S. Thompson. It would be the best dinner EVER. I'd really like to see how well I could pace that guy. 🤔😂😉
🚀Hmmm. I'm thinking dinosaurs...but I need to know if I can take a couple of loaded up Kindles, iPods & some solar chargers. Also a fully stocked solar powered camper van please.
🚀I'd pick me. Where do I sign my multi million dollar contract? 😎😅

"The mere mention of Kennedy's name is said to give Nixon bad cramps all over his body, such as it is. His thugs are already starting to lash Kennedy with vicious denunciations -- calling him a 'liar' and a 'coward' and a 'cheater.'

And this is only December of 1971; the election is still ten months away."

HST was first & foremost an astute journalist with a mind for politics &chicanery. Add to that a generous amt of illegal substances, & a presidential campaign that puts the Good Dr at odds with Nixon at the height of his paranoia & power, and you've got the best book on America politics ever written
