The Legend of Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Origins
The Legend of Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Origins | Renae De Liz
34 posts | 24 read | 22 to read
THE BEGINNING OF A LEGEND! On the hidden island of Themyscira, the Amazons, led by Queen Hippolyta, live in a kingdom of peace, protected by the gods. But the balance is upset when Hippolyta is granted what no immortal may have: a child, given life from the clay of the island. She is the princess Diana, who alone can sense the evil that is infesting the Amazons home. But when a man from the outside world is brought to Themyscira as part of a conspiracy to overthrow its queen, Diana will risk everything to save his innocent lifeand lose everything in the process. Soon, the Amazon princess finds herself in a world she never knew existedAmerica, a land of untold wonders that also finds itself threatened by a great war abroad. In order to get back home, Diana and her new friends Steve Trevor and Etta Candy must head into the war zone and find the Nazi agent known as the Duke of Deception, who wields a powerful artifact that belongs to Hippolyta. And in order to defeat this powerful enemy, the princess of peace must become the hero she was meant to be. She must become Wonder Woman! With gorgeous art, a period setting and contemporary flair, writer/artist Renae De Liz (THE LAST UNICORN), with help from artist Ray Dillon (NOBLE CAUSES), stunningly retells the origin of the greatest superheroine the world has ever known! Collects THE LEGEND OF WONDER WOMAN digital chapters #1-27.

Taking it easy, whilst home sick from work. Half-way through this. The first third is pretty average, but the story improves once Diana leaves the island.

I enjoyed this one so much. The art was gorgeous, and the story was gripping enough to keep me going. Made me want to do a full deep dive down into even more Wonder Woman story lines.

I think this is a fantastic place to start for those who saw the movie and want to check out Wonder Woman in the comics, without having to take a deep dive into the DC comics universe .

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's Wonder Woman day lol! Getting some much needed reading in. It's a dreary, rainy day here in East Tennessee, perfect weather to cozy up with a book or 2!

Rosie is curious about graphic novels too! Fun fact: I wanted to name her Diana after seeing wonder woman but Rosie the Riveter is better since she was found outside the machine shop on the naval base. #rosietheriveter #wonderwoman #graphicnovel #homelibrary

Dear second grade kid talking to her parents at the next table -- You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Wonder Woman could easily beat Harry Potter or any of his little friends in a one-on-one fight, and it wouldn't even be close. Contrary opinions are without merit.

Parents! Do your jobs!

Yossarian Same with Superman, of course. Harry Potter could probably defeat Batman, though. 7y
Yossarian @kirriemummy You know Harry's going to get mind controlled by some evil force, or tricked into thinking Diana is an evil witch. 7y
Aleida Just saw the film. It was terrific. 7y
readinginthedark I don‘t know why, but this blurb from you made me think of Blues Brothers. “How much for the little girl?” 😂Also, Hermione could defeat Batman. I don‘t know about Harry... 6y

I am in awe with this graphic novel. The art, my goddess, the art is amazing! But how could it not when it comes from the same team who created that perfect graphic novel based on The Last Unicorn? Renae de Liz and Ray Dillon are incredible artists.

The story wasn't perfect but I really liked Renae's take on Wonder Woman, especially her true origin. That part moved me to tears.

I've always been a fan of the idea of Wonder Woman, but I've never read a Wonder Woman comic. Now that I've been getting into comics and graphic novels (and with the movie out now), I figured it was time. I loved this book, the art and story.
Another month where I read a comic after posting monthly stats. Oh well, this makes 12 read for the month.

DivineDiana I too have been inspired! Planning on visiting a comic store for the first time! Can't wait to see the movie! 7y

I knew very little about Wonder Woman and her origin story before starting this book. It was a great, exciting adventure with gorgeous art and introduced me to some of my favorite new side character (I ❤Etta Candy). Also baby Alfred Pennyworth is in it! #tbrreadathon

Yesterday's #bookandbreakfast was this great Wonder Woman comic (thanks @moranadatter for the recommendation!), scrambled eggs, toast and half a grilled cheese (which the 6yo ended up eating) and Yorkshire Gold with milk.

I really wanted to like this one, but the insistence on the only true joy being having a child irritated me. Beyond that, the story did a great job of mixing classic characters and story lines w/ modern story telling with the glaring excuse of racism. I am glad I didn't buy this one, but if you can read it for free it's a descent way to lose an hour or so. Didn't address the realities of racism at all 😓

I first read WW in the 70s. It was the only superhero comic that interested me (besides the occasional Superman). So I am extraordinarily interested in the movie reboot (which looks awesome) and the DC comics reboot. I loved it. I devoured this book. I can't believe there won't be more. DC needs to get its act together and figure out a working relationship w/Liz so she can do more of these. That's the way I see it.

DrexEdit And this book was in fulfillment of @bookriot #readharder2017 challenge #18-read a superhero comic with a female lead. Easiest. Challenge. EVAR. 7y

After reading The Secret History of Wonder Woman last year I went on a WW reading binge, and..... I didn't care for most of the arcs I read (and I read several). After taking a long WW break I picked this one up and it is BY FAR my favorite. Of course DC went and canceled it. 😭

Keyoung @8little_paws No, I haven't! Putting it on my TBR list. (edited) 7y
Abby-J Did you see the new Wonder Woman dolls yet? They are beautiful, and I want them all. Hang on. I'll find a link. 7y

Keyoung @Abby-J I hadn't seen those! I'm beyond thrilled that they have a toy line for the movie that actually features women. I have high hopes for the movie... which will probably be smashed to bits. 7y

So I know that we are all bookriot followers here but this article http://bookriot.com/2016/12/21/the-legend-of-wonder-womans-cancellation-and-sile... is making me realise just how skewered my graphic novel reading is towards male writers. This is partly because of the fact that a lot of great female character comics are still being done by male authors. This is something I'm going to work on next year. Any suggestions?

ChasingOm Anything written by Kelly Sue DeConnick or Gail Simone. I love Simone's run on Batgirl or Birds of Prey. DeConnick's Bitch Planet is amazing, and I'm getting ready to start her Pretty Deadly today. 🤘🏻 7y
Weaponxgirl I'm already a fan of deconnick :) I'm planning for the second pretty dead 7y
ChasingOm G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel is also fantastic, and Lumberjanes is a kickass girl power series, written by a group of women. 💜 7y
See All 26 Comments
ChasingOm Oh good! I can't wait to start the first one -- it's looking at me right now, hah. 7y
Weaponxgirl @ChasingOm bugger, pressed send to early! *facepalms the second pretty deadly is for next year but I haven't read any batgirl as was always a marvel fan girl since a child. I've done lumberjanes and Nimona. I try but my ratio is still bad atm 7y
Weaponxgirl @ChasingOm ms marvel is my fave atm! I'm gonna dig out any clamp I haven't read yet too. I read a lot of graphic novels though so I really want a long list to make my go to for the year 7y
ChasingOm I've always been a Marvel fan too, but Batgirl sucked me in. Simone also has a new series called Clean Room that I haven't read any of. I read a lot of graphic novels too, but they're all packed at the moment. 😭 If I happen on any other great ones, I'll share! 😄 7y
Weaponxgirl @ChasingOm yes please! Oh man I hate when reading material is outta reach. I'll send suggestions your way too. I think some hours on the Internet shall be lost after work tomorrow morning in research 7y
literarymermaid I'm with everyone on Ms. Marvel, Bitch Planet and Lumberjanes! Also Gotham Academy has a woman writer and is a good ensemble, they even have a crossovee series with Lumberjanes. I also have to throw in a plug for Monstress. There are some other creators but I haven't read them so I don't know yet. 7y
Weaponxgirl @StoredFeminism already on the monstress bandwagon, it is so good! Gotham academy I haven't tried so that shall be going on the list for next year 7y
Owlizabeth @TheBookAddict thanks for that link! And I definitely recommend 7y
TheBookAddict @Owlizabeth you're welcome. I will also be trying to add some of those to my 2017 TBR pile. 😊 7y
Bloomingjen I am just starting to read graphic novels. Currently, I am reading Ellen Forney's Marbles. I like it so far. Other recs- the Flying Couch, Persepolis, Ghost World. Those are all women authors. Hyperbole and a half also. Excited to read Lumberjanes for the Read Harder challenge. March is great 7y
Weaponxgirl @TheBookAddict thanks so much for the link :) 7y
Weaponxgirl @Bloomingjen persopalis is great, marbles I've heard about but haven't read so thanks for reminding me. And ghost world too 7y
TheBookAddict @Weaponxgirl you're welcome 😊 7y
ChasingOm Just saw Kim & Kim on @kmdartist's feed -- have you heard of it? I haven't read it, but the first trade just came out and it looks awesome. 7y
Weaponxgirl @ChasingOm Ive heard of it in passing and it looks awesome! The hardest part is going to be availability for me to read rather than lack of titles I think. I mainly use the library and When cheap on comixology . But thanks so much and please keep em coming. I'm super excited to get going next year 7y
moranadatter What kind of comics are you looking to read? Superhero? SF? Fantasy? Crime? 7y
Weaponxgirl @kmdartist honestly I love a bit of everything as long as the story catches me I'm happy. My least favourite genre would be romance but I've still been sucked in by some so it's not a given. Like dramacon, I bloody loved that series and wasn't my usual bag at all 7y
moranadatter Also, check out the Valkyries if you haven't already: http://bewarethevalkyries.com/ I've found a lot of great recommendations on their Twitter account and under the hashtag #Valkrecs. Also, this blog: http://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/ 7y
Weaponxgirl @kmdartist thanks for the links hadn't heard of the valkries as I'm not on Twitter or Facebook, but 7y
moranadatter @Weaponxgirl Clamp (an all female manga team) is amazing and their work should be pretty easy to find at public libraries. For American comics, a few writers that haven't been mentioned yet: Kelly Thompson, Genevieve Valentine, Caitlin Kittredge, Kate Leth, Jody Houser, Amanda Conner, and Amy Reeder. 7y
Weaponxgirl @kmdartist I'm a huge clamp fan! Holic and tsubasa. I cried a bit when reading Tokyo Babylon. I'm bookmarking the other authors you've suggested and really appreciate it 7y
