Too Pretty to Live: The Catfishing Murders of East Tennessee
Too Pretty to Live: The Catfishing Murders of East Tennessee | Dennis Brooks
10 posts | 7 read | 22 to read
In this stunning true crime thriller of Facebook, catfishing, and jealousy, a double-murder begins with the click of a button. When Bill Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth began their romance, they unknowingly set in motion a diabolical plot that would end with them murdered in their own home, Hayworth holding their mercifully unharmed infant. Chris was a CIA agent who was concerned about Jenelle. Seeing the cyberbullying she had endured, and worried for her safety, Chris got in touch with Jenelle s protective parents, and her devoted boyfriend, warning them that Payne and Hayworth were a danger to Jenelle. He got especially close with Jenelle s mother, Barbara, who thought of Chris like a son, though she had never met him. Chris claimed that surveillance of Payne and Hayworth revealed that the two of them were planning on harming Jenelle, that it was imminent, and that something needed to be done immediately. Chris promised that he would have their back if they were to act to protect Jenelle. And so they did. Jenelle s father, Buddy, and her boyfriend, Jamie, broke into the home of Payne and Hayworth and murdered them in their own home. What the police investigation turned up, though, made this crime all the more terrifying. Jenelle had been Chris the entire time, catfishing her family and her boyfriend to act in vengeance on her behalf. Using forensic linguistics and diving through the brambles that Jenelle laid to cover her tracks, police were able to put together a chilling portrait of a sociopath, made all the more ruthless by the anonymity of her online life. Bizarre and unforgettable, Dennis Brooks examines the crime and trial from all angles, bringing his expertise as the lead prosecutor in the strange and disturbing case."

This #TrueCrime was such a wild ride! I started to tell my husband about it, but he has agreed to watch the “Southern Fried Homicide“ episode of it :)

I woke up in the middle of the night because I can‘t stop coughing. I have had this really icky cough for 3-4 days but like where it hurts to breather :(

So I started listening so that I am more upright.

I loved that this book was written by the prosecutor because it was a new slant on a true crime book for me. The murderers wrote soooo many emails and many were written by Jenelle Potter's alter egos. It is hard to believe these woman were the masterminds of the murder of a young couple. I appreciated that Dennis Brooks explains the steps he went through for the trial in a comprehensible and logical manner.

emilyhaldi Sounds freaky-deaky!!! ☠️ 7y
BekahB Oh I remember watching something on Investigation Discovery about this case! I definitely want to read the book. 7y
Mdargusch It was creepy @emilyhaldi just like American Fire. 7y

Kaye @Mdargusch This is one I haven‘t gotten to yet. Sounds good. 🤗 7y
Mdargusch Definitely check it out @Kaye - I can't believe I found one you haven't read. 👍🏼 7y
Kaye You‘ve probably read a lot I haven‘t read. 🙂 I‘m always on the lookout for true crime online or at bookstores or sales. They aren‘t quite as easy to find as fiction. 7y

This is a good one! The creepiness factor is similar to that of American Fire. Catfishing, emails, jealousy, and murder all put together for a stranger than fiction true crime story. I'm listening to this on audiobook #rightnow. #augustgrrrl

Cinfhen Sounds like the right type of disturbing 7y
Cinfhen And now I see where @Reviewsbylola gets her true crime grit from 7y
Laura317 I can't believe I haven't heard about this. Stacked. 7y

Mdargusch I think that's true @Cinfhen @Meredith3 is worse than @Reviewsbylola. We love the true crime tv shows too. 7y
Mdargusch I had heard about this @Laura317 a few months ago, but didn't hear the title. So I happily stumbled across this while looking for something on overdrive. 7y
Meredith3 This looks amazing! 7y
Reviewsbylola Lol, I agree it sounds good! 7y
emilyhaldi You guys and your true crime 😂😂 7y
Mdargusch I'm always so shocked that there are such ignorant people that think they can get away with these crimes. It never gets old for me. @emilyhaldi 7y

If you like true crime, you'll love this twisted and convoluted true story of a 30 year old woman and how she manipulates everyone around her, including her own family - to the point where they kill for her.

I did have a few issues with getting confused in the beginning, with so many names thrown at you right from the get go. That may have just been me not paying enough attention though ...

Bks4Wrms Did you read or listen to this? 8y
Bks4Wrms Nevermind, I guess I can't read! 😳 8y
Jenshootsweddings @Bks4Wrms ❤listened to it! I think that's why I got so lost in the beginning 8y

Okay today's walk wasn't as long because it was damp and cold and the grumpy old lady in my head was complaining louder than usual BUT I still went, so ⭐️ for me. The dogs never get enough, even when it's cold and rainy.

I'm finding this audiobook intriguing BUT confusing - the cast of characters are all over the place, and the author just threw them all at you in the beginning. But this family is seriously crazy!

Trying so hard to push myself to walk further, even on days like today when I feel meh and it's about to start pouring rain and sleet for two days. Finding that listening to audiobooks REALLY helps - instead of listening to my internal grumpy old lady voice asking how much further, I'm listening to someone tell me a story.

Finding this one a bit confusing so far, but the events are intriguing enough to stick with it.

Litlady Looks like you have two cute walking companions! 🐶 You're inspiring me to get back into a walk/audio routine! Way to go .. yay!! 👍👏👏👏 8y
drbethandherkindle Awesome!! How does the Terror Squad like longer walks?? 8y
Gulfsidemusing Listening to audiobooks on my walk is the best!!😃 8y
minkyb Well if it ever stops snowing in MA I think this is a brilliant use for audio and my dog will be thrilled! 8y
Jhullie Me too. I love walking...in theory but actually doing it is only made bearable by my audiobooks. 8y

I googled the phrase "too pretty to live" in hopes of finding information about a trope I've become interested in (any other YMRT fans out there?). I'm not sure if the book really includes the trope, but it sounds fascinating. I thought I'd put the call out for recommendations. Do you know any books--true crime, horror, whatever--that include the trope of a woman being attacked or killed because she is just too beautiful? Straight or subverted!

Clare-Dragonfly TVTropes has a similar trope listed, but it doesn't seem to distinguish between "too pretty to be taken seriously" and "too pretty to live (safely)", and I'm only interested in the latter. 8y

By far the craziest true crime story I've ever come across. Worth a read if crime is your thing. I listened to it on my commute and it made the traffic bearable.
