Essential Bukowski
Essential Bukowski: Poetry | Charles Bukowski
19 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
Edited by Abel Debritto, the definitive collection of poems from an influential writer whose transgressive legacy and raw, funny, and acutely observant writing has left an enduring mark on modern culture. Few writers have so brilliantly and poignantly conjured the desperation and absurdity of ordinary life as Charles Bukowski. Resonant with his powerful, perceptive voice, his visceral, hilarious, and transcendent poetry speaks to us as forcefully today as when it was written. Encompassing a wide range of subjectsfrom love to death and sex to writingBukowskis unvarnished and self-deprecating verse illuminates the deepest and most enduring concerns of the human condition while remaining sharply aware of the day to day. With his acute eye for the ridiculous and the troubled, Bukowski speaks to the deepest longings and strangest predilections of the human experience. Gloomy yet hopeful, this is tough, unrelenting poetry touched by grace. This is Essential Bukowski.

Essential Bukowski: Poetry by Charles Bukowski is a good fit for those seeking a thought-provoking and emotionally charged collection of poems that explore the complexities of the human experience, delving into themes of love, death, sex, writing, and the struggles of everyday life with a raw, honest, and often humorous voice. An editor once called him a “passionate madman.”

Haven‘t read my favorite poet in awhile so when I saw this I dived right in. A great collection of some of his most classic and famous poems that are both profound and sad at the same time. I‘ll be thinking about these for awhile.

“What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.”

From my shelves, a book of poems that I‘ve not yet read. This was a gift from a fellow cat lover. 😻

Bukowski is so raw and real. His work makes me want to stay up late, sleep in strange places, and drink whiskey on the rocks - so long as it'll grant me a glimpse at what it's like to write this way.

Visited one of my favorite bookstores and returned with these. Very excited about the tagged - someone in a crit group recently compared my poetry to Bukowski's and I am eager to read his work.

So far Boston has been painful, but we've walked to this loud, smoky dive bar for dinner. It seems like a pretty good representation of the poet, and the menu looks really good. I love finding nerdy literary places to eat/drink.

EDIT: Try the mashed potatoes! Omg!

britt_brooke Love Bukowski and dive bars - have fun! 7y
CocoReads Dive bars frequently have the best food. 7y
Bookcation74 You are right around the corner from a great bookstore - check out Trident Booksellers and Cafe! 7y

GondorGirl @Bookcation74 Maybe we'll try to go there tomorrow! It's waking distance from the convention center. 7y
Billypar Oh no...painful? I second @Bookcation74 - I love Trident. Brookline Booksmith is good too. 7y
GondorGirl @Billypar Dropped a piece of gridwall on my foot and broke a toe. Not the worst I've done at a show, but it's going to be an unpleasant weekend on my feet. In other news, I wish we had free time to explore the city more... I've never been to Massachusetts. 7y
Billypar @GondorGirl Ouch 😬 😬 Take it easy as much as you can, even if relaxing with a book isn't much of an option! 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Oh ouch! Ice and ibuprofen!!! (And food with the ibuprofen). Hopefully the convention will be great fun and make up for it? 7y

Better than Rory Gilmore‘s reading list is Jess Mariano‘s. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was kind of a jerk sometimes, but I‘d still marry him a hundred times over. He‘d read me to sleep at night. Swoon. https://www.buzzfeed.com/eleventy11/the-jess-mariano-reading-list-15muu?utm_term...

Ross So... you‘d let him kill you? 😂 7y
merelybookish I'm a sucker for Jess too. He's the bad boy I just can't stop loving. 7y
Krisjericho @Ross Well, la petite mort, yes. 😂 7y
Ross Haha Amen, to that. 🤔 but then, when you put it that way, I feel bad for valiant men... (edited) 7y

My first step in to the world of Bukowski. I didn't know about him till I read 'Every Exquisite Thing'.. now, I find myself searching for his poetry.

AshleyHoss820 It came as a recommendation for a Book Bingo I was doing (First Book in a Series) and I wasn't disappointed! I solved the mystery early on (I'm an avid Agatha Christie & Sherlock Holmes reader) but it was well-written and the main character is so fun! 😊An 11-year-old girl solving crimes? Yes, please! 8y
