Come As You Are
Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana | Michael Azerrad
11 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
Nirvana came out of nowhere in 1991 to sell nearly five million copies of their landmark album Nevermind, whose thunderous sound and indelible melodies embodied all the confusion, frustration, and passion of the emerging Generation X. Come As You Are is the close-up, intimate story of Nirvana -- the only book with exclusive in-depth interviews with bandmembers Kurt Cobain, Krist Noveselic, and Dave Grohl, as well as friends, relatives, former bandmembers, and associates -- now updated to include a new final chapter detailing the last year of Kurt Cobain's life, before his tragic suicide in April 1994.

For so long I‘ve avoided reading NF books about Nirvana (or Kurt) because I knew they‘d make me sad. I did get sad throughout this book, but I learned some things about the band and the individual members that I didn‘t know already. I‘d recommend to any fan.

A pic of my dog Max because he‘s cute! And a pic of me with the Nirvana street mural in Los Angeles from my trip there this past summer.

Playlist 1/2
I decided to make to make two 90s playlists- what I was listening to in the 90s and what I listen to now from the 90s. This one has my favorites from middle school to high school (1994--2000). I'm not holding anything back (if you've never heard of a band called 'Creed', I'd skip that track 😳). Most of the rest isn't bad, though not at all diverse in terms of music or the bands themselves! 🤦🎸

merelybookish I was thinking of two lists as well. The music that was around and the music I liked. I know all the lyrics to I Will Always Love You but not because I liked it! 😜 And I remember Creed! 🙄 6y
Cinfhen Such a good idea @Billypar but I can‘t really remember what I had on repeat back in the 90‘s other than Barney 😂😂😂 @merelybookish 6y

GripLitGrl Both great list 🎶😎🎸🎤 6y
Billypar @merelybookish @Cinfhen I'd like to hear a mashup of 'I Will Always Love You' and Barney's 'I Love You' 😂 6y
Billypar @GripLitGrl Thanks! I like your list too- the Alanis and Verve songs are true 90s anthems. 6y

RowReads1 Leave Scott Stapp alone😂 6y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @RowReads1 Google Scott Stapp Denny's. I found this fan encounter years ago and everytime I hear his name I think of the story. Honestly, Creed was genetic & the radio was over-saturated with their music, but there is far worse music from the 90's. 6y
Billypar @RowReads1 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Oh wow- that is quite a humbling night! 😮 6y

“Not only was the music compelling and catchy, it captured the spirit of the age.”

This book is thorough; insightful and heartbreaking. I was too young to really appreciate or understand Nirvana in the early 90s. It didn‘t help that my older brother blared them constantly and I got SO tired of hearing them all the damned time. I never became a fan.

Now, my brother is burning me a CD with his favorite Nirvana songs. How very 90s of him! 🤘🏻

alisonrose Oh wow, memories! I read this years ago and loved it ... Nirvana was my favorite band for years in middle and high school. (I assume I‘m a little older than you, heh) (edited) 6y
toofondofbooks I was a senior in high school when Nirvana became popular. Many memories of sitting in my best friends room watching them on MTV over and over. I still have their CD I got back then when CDs were the cool new thing lol 6y

Gina Ahhhh yesss. I remember them well. Very talented but over played on the radio. They were only togeather 4 years before the death of Kurt Cobain. 6y
britt_brooke @Gina The crazy thing is that I still hear them on the local rock station nearly every day now, almost 25 years after Cobain‘s death. 6y
britt_brooke @alisonrose 💚 I was 10 when Nevermind came out. I became obsessed with alternative music 3-4 years later, but by then my brother had burned me out on Nirvana so I never game them a proper chance. 6y
britt_brooke @toofondofbooks Love those kinds of memories! I still buy CDs sometimes, lol. 6y
Gina Yeah they will be known as the Beetles of there time. They really changed the sound of music for the better. Interestingly the Beetles also only were togeather for 4 yrs. My lil bro saw David Grohl at a Gwar concert which makes sence for DG 6y
britt_brooke @Gina Absolutely! It‘s amazing what one band can accomplish. PS. I bet that Gwar concert was crazy! So cool your brother randomly saw Dave Grohl there. 6y

This book was published in 1993. I think you‘ve done okay, #DaveGrohl! 😉🎤🤘🏻🎸

tjwill Indeed. I ❤️ Dave Grohl. 6y
vivastory I think it's astonishing how he managed to get out of the shadow of Nirvana's legacy while still honoring them. 6y
Suet624 I love Dave. Just saw them play at Fenway Park - a lifelong goal. 6y

The 90s in a box! I‘ve only found 1 Nirvana CD among all these - Unplugged - so that‘s better than nothing. I‘ve come to the realization that I was too young to appreciate Nirvana when they first became known (I was 11ish). I constantly heard them blasting from my older brother‘s room so I knew all the songs, but never gave them credit. After years & years of hearing them on radio, I became bored, but now I‘m ready to re-experience them properly.

blondie I love Nirvana. 💜 6y

vivastory I read this many many years ago & a few parts have always stuck with me 6y
britt_brooke @vivastory I was prompted to read this because of a recent book I read (tagged below). I was never a massive Nirvana fan when they were popular, largely due to my older brother incessantly blasting them from his room across the hall. This book might make me a fan yet. (edited) 6y
vivastory I stacked that one when I saw you were reading it. It sounds really fascinating. I also want to read the following 6y
britt_brooke @vivastory It was not necessarily what I was expecting, but I enjoyed James Cook‘s writing a lot. Stacking that other one - thanks! 6y

Azerrad strikes the right blend between fan and journalist in his approach- neither too sterile or fawning. As readers I think we can sympathize with #lithium 's "...today I found my friends- they're in my head". Nirvana's songs have stayed in my head over two decades later largely because of the strange, yet accurate observations of human behavior embedded within Kurt's singular brand of misanthropic poetry. #rocktober @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

#5bands @miralunasbooknook

In no particular order:

1. Nirvana
2. Screaming Females
3. Los Campesinos
4. Sleater Kinney
5. The National

AmyG Oh, Sleater Kinney. Damn....I need more than 5. (edited) 7y
laurieluna Nirvana are definitely in my top 10! 7y
Billypar @AmyG @miralunasbooknook My head is constantly staging debates about which ones belong in my top 5. I also chose to interpret this narrowly as 'bands'- otherwise Tom Waits would be kicking someone out. 7y
See All 13 Comments
AmyG @Billypar I listen to a lot of music. My top 5...chosen in the moment. I need a top 50. You should have included Tom Waits. ;) (edited) 7y
laurieluna Tom Waits! I would say he's in my top 10 too. Said that for other artists on 2 other posts...suppose that leaves one more space in my top 10 😂 7y
Billypar @AmyG @miralunasbooknook Separating bands and solo artists helps avoid some tough decisions. Besides Tom Waits, I don't have to worry about Bob Dylan, Gil Scott Heron, Neko Case, Charles Mingus, or Fiona Apple vying for spots with the bands. 7y
laurieluna @Billypar Fiona Apple 😍 Extraordinary Machine is such a good album! 7y
Shortstack Kudos for the Sleater Kinny nod - also Tom Waits would have been on mine but I, too, avoided solo artists. 7y
saresmoore Dude. Yes. I don't think I could pick 5—I'm impressed! (Even if you did add like ten more in the comments. 😊) 7y
Billypar @miralunasbooknook Agreed! I like everything she releases- not sure if I could even pick a favorite. And speaking of which, @Shortstack I don't understand how Waits or SK can release so many records without any flops or missteps, yet still mix things up enough to stay fresh and interesting. 7y
Billypar @saresmoore You're onto me- I'm trying to have it both ways 😏 7y
batsy @Billypar Gil Scott Heron, Neko Case, Fiona Apple, Sleater Kinney, Nirvana... All my faves, so I'm going to have to say you have great taste 😀 7y
Billypar @batsy Thank you... and likewise! 7y
