I spend an amazing, much needed weekend in Illinois with my best friend. Didn‘t get much reading time but we had tons of fun. Gonna try to get a few chapters in while I wait to board my flight.
Hooray for bookish coworkers 🥳🎉 She brought this gem in for me to borrow so I can continue on with Talylor and Turtle's story 💜
pickKingsolver is one of my favorite authors, so I thought this was a great opportunity to finally participate in #AuthoraMonth!
Unfortunately, this is my least favorite Kingsolver so far. The story felt meandering and soapy to me and was missing a lot of her signature light touch and gentle orchestration. Even so, this is a soft pick, especially if you loved Taylor and Turtle from its prequel, The Bean Trees. And it‘s sleepy puppy approved! 😆

pickThis book picks up about 3 years after The Bean Trees—which I finished recently and really loved, this one was a really good one too though I wasn‘t filled with the same affection. Still, it pulls at your heart strings and asks some challenging questions about identity, family, and love. It was nice to follow up with Taylor and Turtle again to get some answers and to be introduced to new characters as well.
Definitely recommend!
I recently finished reading The Bean Trees, the prequel to this book and I absolutely loved it—naturally I had to buy this one (from thrift books) and look forward to reading it soon!
pickThe character building in this book is so good! Although the plot fell a bit flat in the middle, I was captured completely by the story of Taylor and her adopted daughter Turtle, a Cherokee. A Cherokee lawyer fights the adoption and states that Turtle should be raised by her own community. Taylor of course can‘t let her go and fights back in the only way she knows.

bailedThe cover of this book is gorgeous! I wanted so much to like it, but I've had it for more than 2 weeks and I'm less than halfway through. I was not wanting to pick it back up.
This is my 2nd Kingsolver book. I love her writing. She has a way of making you homesick in a way, though you‘ve never experienced what she‘s describing. I love the last sentence.
“That people don‘t really love one another and dance in the woods for no other reason than to promise goodness, and lose track of themselves, and keep an old fire burning.”
“Alice realizes something important about her daughter at this moment: that she‘s genuinely a mother. She has changed in this way that motherhood changes you, so that you forget you ever had time for small things like despising the color pink.”
