Within the Sanctuary of Wings: A Memoir by Lady Trent
Within the Sanctuary of Wings: A Memoir by Lady Trent | Marie Brennan
40 posts | 35 read | 22 to read
Within the Sanctuary of Wings is the conclusion to Marie Brennan's thrilling Lady Trent Memoirs After nearly five decades (and, indeed, the same number of volumes), one might think they were well-acquainted with the Lady Isabella Trent--dragon naturalist, scandalous explorer, and perhaps as infamous for her company and feats of daring as she is famous for her discoveries and additions to the scientific field. And yet--after her initial adventure in the mountains of Vystrana, and her exploits in the depths of war-torn Eriga, to the high seas aboard The Basilisk, and then to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia--the Lady Trent has captivated hearts along with fierce minds. This concluding volume will finally reveal the truths behind her most notorious adventure--scaling the tallest peak in the world, buried behind the territory of Scirland's enemies--and what she discovered there, within the Sanctuary of Wings. The Lady Trent Memoirs1. A Natural History of Dragons2. The Tropic of Serpents3. Voyage of the Basilisk4. In the Labyrinth of Drakes5. Within the Sanctuary of Wings

Book #5 in the series. This final book brings things full circle for Lady Trent. In all honesty, it tied things up quite nicely and not how I expected at all. All of Isabella & Tom‘s learnings were rewarded here. Highly recommend this series about a woman pursuing her dreams & having to work harder than everyone to be recognized just because she‘s a woman.

Well, that is NOT how I expected this series to end. It‘s fascinating and uniques and while I didn‘t enjoy that leap so much, it‘s still an excellent series and I highly recommend it. 4.5/5 stars. Isabella uses her political and social capital to support a rebellion, climbs to the highest peaks in search of new dragons and changes her world.

Some of the books I'll be reading for #24B4Monday 📚 My library is doing a winter challenge, so I'm also participating in that! Does anyone else's library do reading challenges throughout the year? 😊

Butterfinger I was wondering if you were the one who I had the conversation about our grandmothers awhile back. I knew it was you when I spied Secret Garden. I meant to comfort you and you were the one who comforted me. 5y
Andrew65 Good luck. 5y
wordslinger42 @Butterfinger That's so thoughtful of you to say! I'm really glad I was able to help 💜 It was comforting to know that I'm not alone in reading certain stories to feel close to loved ones 😊 5y

4/5⭐ Even recognizing there were clues throughout the entire series, I thought the big discovery in this finale was a bit absurd. However, Brennan played it out as realistically as possible for the world she built, and I did enjoy it. I LOVED the epilogue, especially the first half: it came full circle from Isabella in the first book and delivered one of the most satisfying thematic wrap-ups I've encountered in an epilogue.

The final book in The Memoirs of Lady Trent series. I think I may have enjoyed this one the most. This book is set, based on description, in the Himalayas where a sighting of an unknown dragon species draws the expedition team into the frozen mountains. Isabella gets a bit more than she bargained for and I gotta say the ending was not what I expected but it was a great twist and brought the original memoirs to a very interesting end.

More light escapism - the Himalayas and dark purple font.

Last book in the series but there's a spin-off novel published this year.

I think maybe I should be reading this aloud to poor Breakfast... Look! #BunniesofLitsy

He's hanging in there, and some symptoms have improved, but now he's damaged his cornea with the rolling over.

PSA: These cones are usually a terrible idea for a bun. Never use one without a vet's advice. Also please everyone treat your buns preventatively for E. caniculi. This is a NIGHTMARE and terrifying, and 50% of healthy buns have a dormant infection.

shanaqui We normally read aloud to our buns when they're new and getting used to us, so they can learn our voices. I'm wondering if it'll help Breakfast while he's separated from his bonded partner and possibly quite confused from a different cage and the cone and the illness... 5y
Megabooks Oh I‘m so sorry about that! E. caniculi can be devastating. And thank you for the PSA because all rabbit parents should be aware. (I‘m a vet.) 💙💙 Glad he‘s doing better!!! (edited) 5y
shanaqui @Megabooks We were never told about it before! We've even had two rabbit specialist vets and no one ever, ever mentioned it! We're really close with our buns -- they're indoor buns and we're always cuddling them and paying attention to them -- so we noticed the SECOND Breakfast started having head tilt, but our vet was saying that by then it's too late for a lot of buns. We still don't know if he'll be okay, but improvement is a good sign, right?! 5y

Good end to the series. Not great though. I definitely think the 4th book was the best. I'm going to miss this world, hopefully the author will return to it at some point.

Not what I expected. I enjoyed reading it, but it went in a different direction and almost distracted from the rest of the series. I wish the "shocking discovery" had been more hinted at so that the stories flowed together instead of this book being so different.

I'm so pleased with this final book, and happy to report that it is just as good, if not better than the proceeding four. I will miss Lady Trent's adventures, but the story was amazing (there was so much that I didn't expect) and the end was fantastically satisfying 💜💜💜

I finished this amazing series last night. I'm so sad the adventures with Isabella are over, but it was such a satisfying conclusion. I absolutely adore all the character development we see in Isabella, Tom, and others over the course of these five books. And of course, dragons!

MinDea Those books are so pretty! What is this series about? 7y
annkuch13 @MinDea it's a series of fictional memoirs by a lady scientist who studies dragons. It takes place in something like Victorian times but a different world, so there's a lot dealing with sexism and her fighting to be taken seriously as a scientist. And there are gorgeous illustrations by Todd Lockwood sprinkled throughout! 7y

I'm so excited (and sad) to start the last book in the series. Lady Trent is one kickass heroine who doesn't let anything or anyone stand in her way of studying dragons. I can't wait to see what challenges she has to overcome in this book.

I'm reading too many books at once, but I'm so terrible at stopping myself from picking up the newest shiny. But really: this, A New History of Life, Waking Gods, Nova, Lamb, The Godless... Argh. That's not even all. And I haven't even picked up half of those in a week plus. How do I get control of this?!

Bklover If you figure it out let me know. I just keep adding to the pile. I've got six going and really want to start another. 😳 8y
LauraBrook I have the same problem. I'm reading 7 now, which is down from my old "usual" of 12 or 13. Oh well! 8y

I am being so slow with this, I guess because I don't want it to be over?

Meanwhile, my bunnies wanted to pop in. #BunniesofLitsy They're sleeping on a bookshelf, and silly Breakfast's paw is dangling off because his sister Hulk takes up all the room!

I enjoyed the fifth and last book in The Lady Trent Memoirs. I am slightly disappointed though. I was looking forward to more science of dragons and I feel like she could definitely do a spin off series based on the conclusion. Still a 5/5 for me #dragons #April
