Shadow Man
Shadow Man: A Novel | Alan Drew
18 posts | 16 read | 13 to read
What Dennis Lehane does for Boston, Alan Drew does for Southern California in this novel of psychological suspense about an idyllic community rocked by a serial killerand a dark secret. Detective Ben Wade has returned to his hometown of Rancho Santa Elena for a quieter life and to try to save his marriage. Suddenly the community, with its peaceful streets and excellent public schools, finds itself at the mercy of a serial killer who slips through windows and screen doors at night, shattering illusions of safety. As Ben and forensic specialist Natasha Betencourt struggle to stay one step ahead of the killerand to deal with painful episodes in the pastBens own world is rocked again by violence. He must decide how far he is willing to go, and Natasha how much she is willing to risk, to protect their friendship and to rescue the town from a psychotic murderer and a long-buried secret. With eerie, chilling prose, acclaimed author Alan Drew weaves richly imagined characters into the first of several thrilling novels of psychological suspense featuring the California world of Ben Wade and Natasha Betencourt. Shadow Man reveals the treacherous underbelly of suburban life, as a man, a woman, a family, and a community are confronted with the heart of human darkness. Advance praise for Shadow Man Recommend this one to fans of Michael Connelly, Tana French, and Dennis Lehane. . . . The Steinbeck-like passages about the vanishing cowboy landscape contribute to the novels power.Booklist (starred review) Wonderfully imagined and wonderfully written, Shadow Man is everything a great thriller should be. . . . A home run.Lee Child, author of Night School Shadow Man revises the old detective story and turns it in several fascinating directions. Alan Drew writes with precision, subtlety, and a streak of suspense that does not often color the literary novel.Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin Shadow Man is smart, chilling, and impossible to put down.William Landay, author of Defending Jacob Always thrilling and often terrifying, Shadow Man is a descendant of Chandlers The Big Sleep. Underlying the grisly dangers of Drews novel is the forceful honesty of all good California noir.Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Gold Fame Citrus Shadow Man has everything I like in a novel: grit, heart, and nail-biting suspense. Its the sort of magically absorbing novel that keeps you turning the pages and checking the locks on the door.Lauren Grodstein, author of Our Short History In Alan Drews electric new novel, Southern California in the 1980s is so palpable it is almost a character of its own. An enrapturing read from its start to its unpredictable, enthralling finish.Daniel Torday, author of The Last Flight of Poxl West

I honestly have some mixed feelings about this book... It felt like two stories competing for air time. This is a thriller, set in the mid 80s in the Californian desert. The main character (a rugged, cowboy, detective, divorcee) is hot on the trail of a serial killer. There's a lot to follow and unpack here...

I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a mild thriller...

📖📚Happy Reading!📚📖

Very well constructed crime novel. It's the mid 80's and a serial killer is stalking the streets of a small southern California town. Det. Ben Wade has returned to his hometown and the violence threatens the place where he grew up and brings secrets from his past back. Excellent writing -- definitely a step above my normal thriller reads.

How far into a book do you get before you decide you just can‘t finish it?
I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway, so was really excited, however I‘m nearly a 100 pages in and just finding it hard to make myself read it.

Really enjoyed this book - two stories running - one about sexual abuse and one about a serial killer - both are well written. Hope it‘s the start of a series as I really liked the characters and I could do with another series.....ha ha 😁

Andrew65 I won a copy of this and need to read it. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 1! Released in May. Drew's considered the Dennis Lehane of SoCal. Det. Ben Wade moves back to his idyllic hometown for a quieter life. The peace is shattered when a serial killer slips through windows and screen doors. As Ben and forensic specialist Natasha Betencourt try to stay one step ahead, his world is rocked by a teen's suicide. So much for the simpler life. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Some dusk-y covers. Funny that two have "shadow" in the title.

Okay, this book was a good book - it just wasn't the book I thought it was. I *thought* this would be a gritty serial killer story, and on one-hand it is! On the other ... it is actually more an intimate look at one man's life who is involved in this search for the serial killer. I thought the book was a good, strong read, I just felt let down by its description and the story I was given instead.

#Bookmail is the best mail 😁👏🏻👏🏻! Just received this ARC from Random House *happy dance*. Looking forward to this read. If Lee Child says it's good, then it's probably good 👍🏻. Anyone read anything by Alan Drew before?

CouronneDhiver No, but this sounds interesting! Let us know how it goes 🤓 8y

Great serial killer thriller set in Southern California in 1986! Richly developed characters balanced with action- not sure if this will be the start to a series but my fingers are crossed that it will be! #SerialKillerThriller #80s

The tedious part of #bookmail1through12 - double checking every pub date to make sure I get them read pre-deadline.

Cinfhen I just finished day 28🌹I checked back on my food journal, Day 18 was the first day I had zero cravings and zero headaches!!! You're ALMOST there! I've decided not to re-introduce dairy, I don't miss it and I'm going to try to avoid flour and sugar. I've discovered which vegetables to avoid and I'm feeling pretty darn good! 8y

"In the tradition of Michael Connelly and Tana French..."

Huh, surprised by this blurb! I love/hate Tana French, but I've never heard her compared to Connelly before. But I am now intrigued by this suspense novel! #bookmail1through12
