The sinister new novel from the No 1 bestselling author of Unravelling Oliver and Lying in Wait. 'Once I had cleared the bottles away and washed the blood off the floor, I needed to get out of the flat.' Delphine Hamilton is a fake. She has been living on the Cte d'Azur for ten years, posing as an English heiress. However, her alimony is running out, her looks are fading, and her wealthy lovers are fewer and further between. Down to her last euros, and desperate to get out of her apartment, Delphine decides to spend the day at the Negresco where she is caught stealing another guest's meal. He takes pity on her and invites her to a party. The guests are young and beautiful and Delphine feels her age, and is achingly conscious of her worn out dress. But after a few lines of cocaine and multiple cocktails, she is oblivious to everything. Hours later, as dawn is breaking, she wakes up on the floor of a deserted hotel penthouse. She makes her way home through the back streets. Even before she opens the door she can hear the flies buzzing and she realizes that the corpse in her bedroom has already begun to decompose ... Liz Nugent's new novel is the dark, twisted and shocking story of what takes Delphine from an island childhood in Ireland to ruination in a grotty flat in Nice.

Mehso-so

It was very hard to feel any sort of kinship with Delia. Her manner, and the way she treated others was really quite appalling. There was really nothing likable about her at all. Having said that, I liked the way the story evolved from the fact of there being a dead body in the flat to all the events leading up to that point. There were a couple of curve balls and surprises but actually, I was just glad to be finished at the end.

Liz Nugent‘s psychological thriller is a shallow, blank affair that wastes an intriguing opening to follow the life story of the vapid, self-absorbed protagonist who lacks wit, intelligence or self-awareness and whose beauty means that others project onto her, which she tries to use for her own ends and ultimately fails. There‘s no tension, I didn‘t care about Delia and frankly the story bored me so the downbeat ending left me very blah.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wrote about it on my website under the title “A woman to blame”: https://www.artkavanagh.ie/skin-deep.html Yet, I was surprised to discover, while getting books ready to go to the charity shop, that I never expect to read it again. The same is not true of Nugent‘s previous two books, both of which I‘ll reread at some point.

very much enjoyed this & Liz Nugent can have all my book 💰 whenever she puts out a new one. Delia Russell is terrifying & not even remotely fit to be around people. this is a propulsive character study that i didn't want to put down.

"'being agreeable does not suit everyone. People who go through life smiling miss out on the dignity of sorrow'"

This really struck a chord with me, maybe because I'm not the smiling always happy type. In fact, people like that confuse me.

This is really quite the page turner! It‘s almost like a fable, a sinister one at that with a wicked fairy as the main character. Liz Nugent has created a brilliantly complex and off the wall character in Delia Russell. A dark and gripping tale with some twists and turns. The ending is just fantastic and unexpected! A fascinating, imaginatively written and well plotted story which hooked me in from start to finish. Highly recommended.

If you like dark and twisty, psychological tales, then this is for you. Liz Nugent has created an amazingly memorable character. You might not like Cordelia Russell, and all the things she does, but you won't forget her! Really compelling. It starts with a body in a hotel bedroom in France, then we go back in time to 1975 to a tiny island off the coast of Ireland, and follow the events from there. Daisy approved. #dogsoflitsy

Oryx @CoffeeK8 I've just scrolled down your feed, you're right! Doodle twins. What type of doodle is yours? Daisy's nose started off black, then turned pink over time. We suspect it was from too much sniffing 😉 7y
CoffeeK8 @Oryx LOL, that explains it, Hurley‘s a big sniffer. He‘s an apricot Labradoodle. 7y

This is an Irish term I use and have heard used a lot, but never seen it written down before and had no idea how it was spelt! Funny that. Pronounced "crater" (where I'm from anyway) #irishauthors

DeborahSmall ‘Poor crater‘ is such a common saying. Didn‘t realise it was derived from ‘creature‘ but of course makes so much sense! Love it ❤️ 7y
Oryx @DeborahSmall I do enjoy a nice bit of etymology ☺️ 7y
DeborahSmall Me too, though I tend to bore my kids and husband with too much 😂 7y
artkavanagh It can also be used to refer to whiskey, as in “a drop of the craythur” (which, of course, sounds alarmingly like “a drop of the crater”. (I think it may have been Myles na gCopaleen who first pointed that out.) 7y
Oryx @artkavanagh Interesting! Not heard that one 😊 7y
