Last Days of the Romanovs: Tragedy at Ekaterinburg
Last Days of the Romanovs: Tragedy at Ekaterinburg | Helen Rappaport
Rappaport, an expert in the field of Russian history, brings you the riveting day-by-day account of the last fourteen days of the Russian Imperial family, in this first of two books about the Romanovs. Her second book The Romanov Sisters, offering a never-before-seen glimpse at the lives of the Tsar's beautiful daughters and a celebration of their unique stories, will be published in 2014.The brutal murder of the Russian Imperial family on the night of July 16-17, 1918 has long been a defining moment in world history. The Last Days of the Romanovs reveals in exceptional detail how the conspiracy to kill them unfolded. In the vivid style of a TV documentary, Helen Rappaport reveals both the atmosphere inside the family's claustrophobic prison and the political maneuverings of those who wished to save--or destroy--them. With the watching world and European monarchies proving incapable of saving the Romanovs, the narrative brings this tragic story to life in a compellingly new and dramatic way, culminating in a bloody night of horror in a cramped basement room.

There was a lot more politics in the book than I‘d expected, so that was not as interesting to me as the parts that did focus on the family itself. This seemed really well researched with a lot of primary sources being used, most notably writings by the last head guard of the Romanovs in Ekaterinburg, also one of the main murderers. This book may have included the most detailed description of the murders themselves.

Full disclosure I have a degree in history with an emphasis on Russian history. Forget the typos and over use of $5 words that are supposed to…I guess make it sound like she knows what she‘s talking about. Let‘s just put it this way she knows enough to outline things…not enough to write a detailed book like this. It‘s called research, oh and fact checking. One opinion doesn‘t make it true. As a historic writer I‘d think she‘d figure this out.

This book needs some serious editing and fact checking. Rappaport makes statements as speculation and then uses the same statements as fact. She uses unnecessary “big” words. There are silly errors that should have been picked up (missing words etc). The biggest glaring mistake is at the end when she writes about the burial of the family. She writes that it is Alexey and Maria that are separated. All evidence and history has shown that it was 👇🏼

OrangeMooseReads Anastasia and Alexey the two smallest that were taken and burned. This is what helped fuel the Anna Anderson controversy. To get something like that so wrong when it has been agreed upon by the vast majority of those involved makes me question the entire book. I would skip this one, there are better books on the Romanovs‘s last days. (edited) 6y
LeahBergen I don‘t know. Articles from last year state that it was Marie buried with Alexei and Anastasia‘s remains are the ones interred with her family? 6y
OrangeMooseReads @LeahBergen I hadn‘t heard any of that. All of the books I‘ve read and documentaries that I‘ve seen say that it was Anastasia. This book was published in 08/09. 6y

LeahBergen I‘ve always been so intrigued by this family! 😄 Here is a Smithsonian article: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/dna-analysis-confirms-authenticity-rem... 6y
OrangeMooseReads @LeahBergen I have too. Thanks for the link 👍🏼😊 6y
LeahBergen I had a big obsession with Anastasia in my teens (pre-discovery of their bodies and pre-DNA). I secretly always hoped that Anastasia‘s remains wouldn‘t be found so that I could keep believing she somehow escaped. 😩 6y
OrangeMooseReads @LeahBergen the article has the same thing the book does just that it‘s Maria. I wish there was a way to know for sure. They could guess the age of the girl by the bones but they had been so nutritionally deprived that probably wouldn‘t work. Such mysteries are frustrating lol 6y
OrangeMooseReads @LeahBergen I inherited my obsession from my mom only I‘ve taken it much further than she ever has. Lol 6y

I‘m just about 100 pages into this and I‘m still not sure of Rappaport. I‘ll continue to read this because it‘s interesting and I like to see what different scholars/writers write about the Romanovs (and other subjects too). There have been a couple times she has put speculation as fact or wrote it in a way that made it seems to be fact. It‘s dense but getting to the meat of the story now so maybe I‘ll be able to read faster. #historyreadernerd

I think I‘m going to attempt this one next. I haven‘t been in a reading mood lately. I have also been sucked into a live feed of 2 feral pregnant cats that have been trapped for birth, spay, and release. One is due any moment and the other is due soon. If you‘re interested it‘s TinyKittenHQ on YouTube.

Oof. I have had this on my shelf awhile and finished this weekend. A good word to describe it would be “joyless.” But still interesting for an old history fart like me.

Possibly one of the least festively appropriate books to finish reading on Christmas Eve... regardless, this was a very well-written and compulsively readable account of the last 14 days of the Romanov family. Heartbreaking and meticulously researched, I recommend to anyone with a Romanov obsession and those who enjoy narrative nonfiction.

Enjoying the brisk afternoon. Finally some fall weather in this heat basin! Having some tea and looking over this #bookmail that I didn‘t realize was part of a trilogy! I loved her book THE ROMANOV SISTERS, which is book 2. The book pictured is book 1, and she has a 3rd installment set for publication summer of 2018! #BookNTea #NonfictionNovember

This book was heartbreaking. I added Merida to the picture because those 4 girls had to of been so brave for their parents during this time of captivity and not understanding all of it. It was well written and I will always be thinking of the Romanovs family on July 17th. #Simba wanted to add a face rub to Merida 😸

Laalaleighh I was obsessed with them growing up. But the older I get the more I realize how sad their story is. 7y

Lunch at ihop today featuring the turkey avacodo bennie with sweet tea while reading about the Romanovs. This book is good so far, but I truly don't understand why the Urals and Bolshevik hated them so much to the point of exile, imprisonment, and execution. I need to read something about whatever started this controversy.

This book is really good so far. I'm about 2/3rds way in the book and I have found out so much new information that I did not even know before - and I have been studying the Romanovs for a couple of years. The amount of small details and information that no other book or documentary provided is astounding to me! Helen Rappaport, wrote this book as if she too had been imprisoned with the family and kept an eye on their every move.

maximoffs I have this on my to read! So glad it's good 8y
gestapocat @steverogers What made you want to read this in the first place, if I may ask? I, myself, have been obsessed with Rasputin and the Romanovs and especially the Romanov daughters for a couple of years - taking notes and looking and reading through so much about them. But, you definitely will like the book, I guarantee it! 8y

Let me say, I say SO-SO because I kept it as long as legally possible from the library, not because it was awful. It has good writing & is interesting, but I couldn't keep myself invested in the book because of how heavy the subject &what I am dealing with currently-I had to read it in spurts and "digest" it in small bites. I plan to come back and read it next month and finish it next month. For now I will set it aside momentarily to process.?
