Voyage of the Narwhal
Voyage of the Narwhal | Andrea Barrett
12 posts | 12 read | 16 to read
Capturing a crucial moment in the history of exploration--the mid-nineteenth century romance with the Arctic--Andrea Barrett's compelling novel tells the story of a fateful expedition. Through the eyes of the ship's scholar-naturalist, Erasmus Darwin Wells, we encounter the Narwhal's crew, its commander, and the far-north culture of the Esquimaux. In counterpoint, we meet the women left behind in Philadelphia, explorers only in imagination. Together, those who travel and those who stay weave a web of myth and mystery, finally discovering what they had not sought, the secrets of their own hearts.

This was good. It took a while to get going, so I really didn‘t get interested until they were on their way. Even while they were away, the scenes with Erasmus‘s sister, Lavinia, and her friend, Alexandra, back home bored me. That entire storyline did get more interesting later on, however. I sure didn‘t like Zeke (along with the majority of the characters – at least the ones on board the Narwhal!).

This book was already on my wishlist when I got the chance to get an ARC of it. How happy I was! And Andrea Barrett did not disappoint. This is a beautiful book. A beautiful book with so much soul in it.

The plot is heavily character driven. Their feelings, thoughts, hopes make the biggest part of the book. This all in the setting of the Arctic with its strange new animals, its ice and mountains and its cold.

Yes, this book is filled with ⬇

Jari-chan tragedies and fears and tears. But the characters all grew so close to me, I laughed with them, I cried with them, I suffered with them.

This book was all I was hoping for when I put it on my wishlist, and even more.

I think I‘m going to add this month‘s #bookspin to the DNF pile. It‘s not bad, but also not really what I was expecting, and I‘m kind of bored, so on to my next adventure!

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes a book just isn't the right fit!!! 3y

Me: I'm not joining the #BookSpinBingo this month. #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin should do. I need more time for other things, and I need to reduce stress as well.

Also Me: Joins anyway.

@TheAromaOfBooks

TheAromaofBooks I'm so sorry that this challenge has become both addictive and stressful 😂 You could always try doing a month with categories instead of specific titles to give yourself more flexibility and maybe less stress?? Whatever works for you!!! 3y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks You really got me hooked 😂 I tried to it with categories, but it actually makes it harder for me 😅 3y
TheAromaofBooks LOL I'm actually the same way. Even vague stuff like “a green cover“... I just start dithering over which green cover is a better pick & get nowhere haha 3y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks I feel you there 😂😅 3y

Visited Jackson Street Booksellers (my favorite bookstore) for the first time in close to a year. Dragonball is for my husband and history of the English language is for my mom. Snagged 2 exploration books (one nonfiction , one fiction) and a book discussing how to protect global biodiversity. #bookstore #shopping #explore

Pick!
Rec especially for those who love Arctic adventure stories. Barrett is deft at weaving in factual accounts from polar voyages into a fictional narrative.
Also, the book goes into the suffering that happens after the voyage - the survivor‘s guilt, the regrets of hubris.
An accurate and compelling story

I own one book that has a rainbow on it and I can‘t find it anywhere so I ROYGBIV‘ed a rainbow instead. Some of my colors may be a little off but it‘s lunch and I‘m starting to get hangry. 😂 🌈

#FunFridayPhoto - In this "extraordinary novel of Arctic and personal exploration, maps are deceitful, ice all-powerful, and reputation more important than truth or human lives." A chilly favorite several years ago..

SharonGoforth I've had this on my shelf for years-really must read it. Love Andrea Barrett's writing 😊 8y
Gulfsidemusing @SharonGoforth Great writing! Also enjoyed The Air We Breathe and one of her story collections. 8y
