Catching up on the weekends reading- this was my #doublespin for Aug and I found it absolutely riveting! Probably not for everyone but I found it genuinely suspenseful & also enjoyed the extracts from various diaries of those on the original Endurance expedition!

TheAromaofBooks Ooooo I am definitely going to get a copy of this for my husband! He and my dad and my brothers and my grandpa literally all took turns reading Endurance last year and they all were so into it that I didn't even bother reading it myself because every time I saw any of them they started telling me more about it 😂 3mo
bekakins @TheAromaofBooks amazing! He will definitely enjoy it if he was interested by the original expedition story! 3mo

I‘ve read Caroline Alexander‘s book about Shackleton‘s expedition, & I have Alfred Lansing‘s on my shelf, so I couldn‘t resist downloading this audio as well. It‘s more straightforward & scientific in a logbook sort of way than Alexander‘s, but I still found most of it fascinating as a more immediate, first person version. The part about the Aurora got long to me, but other than that, I‘m amazed by this survival story every time I read about it.

Daisey * I accessed this audiobook through the #Librofm Educator #ALC program. Audio duration: 15 hours 48 minutes 7mo

Mensun Bound was the Director of Exploration to attempt to find Ernest Shackleton‘s shipwreck at the bottom of an Antarctic sea, the Endurance, which sank during his attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. This book covers both attempts in 2019 (unsuccessful) & 2022, which was successful. The 2022 search was bookended first by the pandemic, and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both affecting the morale of the crew. Even so they ⬇️

Texreader persevered through extreme conditions and amazingly discovered it. I‘m sad I don‘t remember it in the news. I too was overwrought about the Russian invasion. This probably won‘t be a favorite of mine, the book can be extremely technical, and you have to know a lot of boating terms, which escape me. But I appreciated the history, and the palpable joy from the author from finding the ship. This is my 2nd book for #Antarctica #readingOceania 9mo
Librarybelle I don‘t remember the discovery mentioned in the news either! 9mo

I started this audiobook today for #Antarctica #readingOceania. I decided to forego Greta and Valdin. I‘ve read way too many books on #NewZealand (6 or 7) and once I started listening to it I wasn‘t too keen on it. This will be only my second book for Antarctica

Henry George (Gino) Walker should be recognized among the great arctic explorers, this author asserts, if only he'd survived a tragic accident at 25. A mediocre student with a quest for adventure, it turned out he was an excellent and likable leader of expeditions into the heart of #Greenland and established a manned station in Greenland for a year to track weather trends for potential flights to shorten the trip from the USA to Europe. Most of ⬇

Texreader the book focuses on the fierce conditions of the expeditions, for the men manning the station, and efforts to relieve them in somewhat regular intervals--all close to impossible. This was an interesting study of some of the last true explorers (in early 1930s), and especially of an individual, Gino, with unique talents and mindset. #readingtheAmericas2023 @librarybelle @barbarabb 1y
