I‘ve started reading Meet the Austins to my 10 yo granddaughter bc this has always been a favorite series, in addition to the Murrys and O‘Keefes of the Wrinkle in Time series. At some point in the chronology there is a mingling of the 2 families, and I hope to work on both series over the next 12-16 mos.

I feel like sometimes people forget that L'Engle wrote more than just the Wrinkle in Time books. I loved her Austin family books, too!

@Eggs, @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Eggs I adore thé Austins ???!! Great choice? 1y

Happy to be starting this series! I love Madeleine L‘Engle and we had a dog-eared copy of The Young Unicorns growing up that I read pieces of, but I‘ve never read the rest in the series.

This book was as marvelous as everybody told me it would be! Captured the feeling of being a kid without pandering or aging them up. Very excited for this series.

monalyisha Book #4 was one of my favorite books as a kid and I had *no* idea that it was part of a series. 🤦‍♀️ 6y

A very easy read, you can read this in a day. It is an excellent book for children but not so suited for adults. It did not impact me the same way as the "Wrinkle in Time" series. I think L'Engle is better suited in writing science fiction/fantasy book. I felt like I was reading a diary of my sister. I did not enjoy it that much but I'm still looking forward to the next book.

monalyisha I love the book you tagged for this post! I *despised* the movie version of "I Capture the Castle." ?? 7y
BarbaraJean @monalyisha Ha! I saw the movie first, so I have a feeling that affected my view of book vs. movie! The movie version of Cassandra spoke to a lot of things I was experiencing when I first saw it. Then I sought out the book and loved it even more. I love both, but (as always) the book is so much richer. (edited) 7y

My best friend loves to tell the story about this book...she was in the next room, I had been doggedly trying to read this book and I just had finally reached a point where I had HAD it with L'Engle's nonsense in this. I threw it across the room, shouted "NO ONE wants to meet the Austins!!" and left the book lying where it fell for a good day or so before I picked it up and hid it away until the next book donation day. ? #photoadaynov16

GlitteryOtters @rubyslippersreads @LauraBeth I laugh about it now (9 or 10 years later, I think?!) pretty readily, but you have NO idea how much it pained me to throw a L'Engle across the room, though! I'm named mostly after Meg in Little Women, but my mom loved A Wrinkle in Time, too, so she's always said my name came partially from that book. I was raised reading the best of her work & thinking she was a literary god. This book disappointed me greatly. 8y

rubyslippersreads @GlitteryOtters I've never read it. Now I can't decide whether to satisfy my curiosity or avoid it. 😀 8y
LauraBeth Have you read A Circle of Quiet? 8y
GlitteryOtters @LauraBeth no, I've only read her fiction so far 8y
LauraBeth I haven't read it either but a lot of people have recommended it so I probably should 8y
GlitteryOtters @rubyslippersreads it is terribly dated and does NOT translate well to those who have experienced the past 50 years of our collective world, it's also poorly written, characters are privileged, coddled simpletons who aren't interesting AT ALL & who freak out over really stupid stuff & make you want to grab them by their collar, shake them and say "grow up! Get some perspective! Your problems aren't that bad, and you are being an ass about NOTHING" 8y
rubyslippersreads @GlitteryOtters I have so much on my TBR list, this one sounds like I can safely push it to the bottom. 😄 8y
GlitteryOtters @rubyslippersreads or, you know, you can push it off of your TBR & into a fire pit. Would make nice kindling. 😂 Reread A Wrinkle In Time instead to get ready for the new movie version coming up... 8y
rubyslippersreads @GlitteryOtters Ooooh, can't wait for the movie! 8y
