Self-Compassion
Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself | Kristin Neff
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a Ping-Pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure. Fortunately, there is an alternative to self-esteem that many experts believe is a better and more effective path to happiness: self-compassion. The research of Dr. Kristin Neff and other leading psychologists indicates that people who are compassionate toward their failings and imperfections experience greater well-being than those who repeatedly judge themselves. This book powerfully demonstrates why it's so important to be self-compassionate and give yourself the same caring support you'd give to a good friend. Using solid empirical research, personal stories, practical exercises, and humor, Dr. Neffthe world's foremost expert on self-compassionexplains how to heal destructive emotional patterns so that you can be healthier, happier, and more effective.

"IN THIS INCREDIBLY COMPETITIVE SOCIETY OF OURS, HOW MANY OF us truly feel good about ourselves? It seems such a fleeting thing—feeling good—especially as we need to feel special and above average to feel worthy. Anything less seems like a failure."

Apparently the universe really wants me to read this one. It‘s been referenced at least a dozen times over the course of my last two months 🎧📖.

Stupidly enough as well, I can‘t find my physical copy so, Audible credit it is. Gonna start this today, maybe in a few or as a wind-down read tonight.

DieAReader @Texreader I clearly needed to be smacked with it today. Just had the epiphany that I won‘t find my physical copy 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have the digital copy🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
CoverToCoverGirl The read me sign was clearly flashing insistently. 😆 1y

DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl Clearly I was being unknowingly obtuse🤦🏻‍♀️🙄🤣 I‘ve started it & am currently at 22% on the audiobook. Either way, it‘ll be a re-read for sure. 1y

I don‘t say this lightly, but this book is life changing. I‘ve been reading it slowly since the summer, since each chapter is so rich and conjures so many emotions. If you struggle with negative self-talk, perfectionism, or you just want more compassion and happiness in your life — read this book! It‘s a self-help book that actually helps.

While it‘s nice to feel special, the practice of self-compassion teaches that we always have innate worth because we‘re human, whether we feel special or not. Gold.🔸#septemberreads2021

A new pile of books waiting to be read feels like open arms waiting to give me a hug. Anyone else feel that? 🥰📚

This has been a slow read (as I think it should be) - I've been on this journey of practicing self-compassion for a long time. It is something I practice alone and during my therapy sessions. I am proud of each and everyone of you who is getting through each day- You got this! It takes time & practice but we feel best when we love ourselves - our bodies & minds included. ☀️

Caroline2 Thank you. I need to read that today. ❤️ 3y

I‘ve got several books to return to the library, so I made these watercolor bookmarks to slip into them. Perhaps one will find the right person at the right time.

Have you ever found a bookmark or note left behind by another reader?

BarbaraBB They are lovely. How kind of you 🤍 4y

Good morning from the Goslings! The tagged book is my current #BFC audio read. While there is some value in it, I‘m having a hard time with the suggestions to self-soothe by calling oneself “darling” and caressing one‘s own face. The sound you hear is my eyes, rolling far back into my head 😉

Day 1: A little mid-morning meditation to keep me going. Hoping to get a walk in this afternoon if the weather holds. #audiobookfitnesschallenge

wanderinglynn That‘s a great idea to do a mini-meditation session mid-day. 🙌🏻 6y
Drocchio03 @wanderinglynn It had a tremendously positive and immediate effect. And I used the mantra later in the day during a *trying* meeting. 🙂 6y

This book honestly changed the way I think about myself! Kristin Neff speaks candidly about her own life, as well as the development of her theories about self-compassion and how they have led to new therapy techniques. It makes so much sense- we are quick to forgive others for things that we torment ourselves for doing. And our unrealistic expectations lead to increases in anxiety and depression. Loved it. I think this is the first self-help book I've ever read? It was quite a mixed bag: her examples including weight loss, sexuality, and her son's autism felt problematic/inaccurate to me, but at the same time I found the core components of the concept of self-compassion (mindfulness, being kind to yourself, emphasizing shared humanity) and her discussions of the dangers of self-criticism and focusing on high self-esteem very compelling and useful.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian "Self compassion mantra for moments of anxiety/strong negative emotions:
This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is a part of life. May I be kind to myself in this moment. May I give myself the compassion I need."

I really believe some books are meant to find us. This book was one of those for me. It spoke to my heart, inspired my soul, and shifted my perspective. Definitely recommend this one to many! #compassion #selfcompassion #authenticity #psychology

If you‘re like me, this cheesy cover & title would ensure you‘d never read this book. But I trust my therapist & I love homework. Even though I had a hard time reading this book, which includes the words “dear” & “darling” a little too frequently for my taste, the research is seriously compelling. I found myself convinced that self-compassion is a challenging pursuit & most of all a really functional, useful tool for taking on the day, every day.

underground_bks Also if you love The Horse Boy, Dr. Kristen Neff is married to Rupert Isaacson and Rowan aka the horse boy is their son. She talks about their experience with Rowan throughout Self-Compassion. 7y
