In Our Backyard
In Our Backyard: Human Trafficking in America and What We Can Do to Stop It | Nita Belles
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In recent years, Americans have woken up to the reality that human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries. But what most still do not understand is that neither is it something that just happens to "other people" such as runaways or the disenfranchised. The human trafficker is no respecter of faith, education, or socioeconomic status, and even kids who are raised in solid families in middle and upper class suburbs can fall victim. Likewise, labor trafficking happens in our cities, neighborhoods, and rural areas. Through true stories and years of boots-on-the-ground experience, including at the Super Bowl, anti-trafficking expert Nita Belles teaches readers everything they need to know about human trafficking in the United States and what they can do to join the fight against it. She helps concerned parents, friends, teachers, law enforcement, government officials, and other leaders understand all forms of trafficking, identify risk factors, and take practical steps to keep their loved ones and neighbors safe from predators.

This is in our backyard looking to the fenced garden in our western neighbor‘s yard. More dogwood/azalea combos!

We‘ve got good buds on the peonies and clematis. Our irises are late-blooming, but they‘re growing!

But honestly, I can‘t wait for you to see the calla lilies later in the summer. They were a bonus with the house and they flourish pretty much on their own. It‘s wild!

My favorite flowers are peonies and irises, if forced to choose. This is our east-facing peony with lots of buds getting ready to burst! Will post more as they open!

My mom did a lot of work in the yard in the 90s and she has quite the green thumb!! My dad does a great job maintaining her hard work now. We have great soil for flowers, but it doesn‘t seem to work well for a vegetable garden, though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ and Leah, most of the year I‘d rather be in 🇨🇦💙🥶 4y

Obviously this wasn't an enjoyable read, but I certainly learned from it. I didn't always like the author's tone but she definitively wants to bring awareness to an important issue.

Have I been reading lately? Almost not at all 🙈 because getting a house set up takes an obscene amount of time. But I just got this new reading space set up and I‘m pretty darn excited for it this summer!
