#BookReport

Thalia was a so-so. The first part really dragged for me and I almost bailed but wanted to use it for 1957 #192025. The 2nd part was better but I didn‘t like anyone and hated the ending.

Best of the week was Search, Hijab Butch Blues and the Jane mystery. The Messy Lives of Book People holds the “most hated book of the year” spot to date. Starless Sea is a book I think I will love but wasn‘t connecting so back on the shelf for now

Cinfhen It seems like everyone in the #SundayBuddyRead HATED this one 👉🏽what was so awful about it??? 1y

This was for #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub Nov read. I‘m glad I picked this up again after I stopped reading in the early chapters last month. And once I continued, it held my interest. I think the characterisation is really good, I love the evocative descriptions of the places, and I enjoyed the tension. I liked it, melodrama and all.

batsy Glad you picked it up again and ended up liking it! I really enjoyed this, too. 2y
jlhammar Oh good, glad you ended up enjoying it! I‘m really excited to start Clothes-Pegs. Loving these Furrowed Middlebrow picks! 2y
Ruthiella Great review! I really liked the turns of the plot here too. It kept me hooked. 2y

We were fooled into thinking Claude was the creepy one, when it was Thalia all along. But at the same time, I felt sorry for her.

I‘m wondering if the head on the right side of this photo is the “sandstone “ Nefertiti mentioned in the book? (Akhenaten is on the left.)

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub ⬇️

Ruthiella Totally! 😂 But really both needed better parents!!!! 2y
jlhammar I also felt sorry for Thalia. She was a tad intense. Cool to see that Nefertiti sandstone! 2y

Well, that was a bit of a gothic melodrama, wasn‘t it? I thought she captured the atmosphere of France, both geographically & culturally, really well. The Paris section was just as evocative as that in Dinard. I can believe that Rachel wasn‘t seeing things exactly as the were, but Cynthia was so capricious & her attitude to her children so indefensible the hints that she wasn‘t so bad really were hard to accept.👇
#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

CarolynM ☝️The spectre of the Raj hung over the whole story. I hadn‘t thought before about its impact on the children, but it was pretty clear here. And although I don‘t think it excuses her, it helps to explain Cynthia. 2y
Ruthiella Great review! I also never quite bought Rachel‘s attempts to excuse Cynthia. 2y
batsy Lovely review and photo! Great point about the spectre of the Raj. I did feel for Cynthia at times even while she made me angry, so I appreciated that the characters had complexity. 2y

CarolynM @Ruthiella Thank you😘 2y
CarolynM @batsy Thank you😘 I don‘t think you could accuse any of the characters of being one dimensional. 2y
Tamra Rachel‘s naïveté certainly set Cynthia‘s character in sharp contrast! I‘m glad you liked it. ? 2y
jlhammar Beautiful pic and wonderful review! Such great points. I agree, I don't think we can excuse Cynthia's behavior, but I liked how Faviell made you think about how she was a product of her circumstances and how she felt duty bound by societal expectations. @batsy I also appreciated the complexity she gave to her characters. 2y
Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻 yes a gothic melodrama , perfect description. The characters were complex , I agree. I really enjoyed this one. It‘s one to remember. Lovely photo Carolyn 💚 2y
LeahBergen Nicely reviewed! I love your commentary on the Raj; it certainly did have a looming presence. 2y
willaful I also found the attempt to redeem Cynthia hard to swallow, but I guess it's part of Rachel realizing she might not be the most reliable narrator. 2y

I stayed up way too late the other night, finishing this. It was a very slow starter for me and I wasn't always sure along the way that it would be a pick - I pretty much hated every single character in the book at one time or another - but once I got about halfway through I couldn't stop and ultimately really loved it. It feels very *true* to me and while there was, indeed, a ton of melodrama, so is there in life. 😆#furrowedmiddlebrowclub

Tamra Well said! 👏🏾 They were awful in their own special ways weren‘t they? (edited) 2y
quietjenn @Tamra Indeed! I appreciate variety in all things 😉 2y

batsy Nicely put! That bit about the melodrama feeling true. Life is very melodramatic 😆 2y
Ruthiella Great review! I agree there was a lot of real life underscoring the drama and awful behavior. 2y
jlhammar Yes, the melodrama! It also rang true for me, especially when I think back to when I was that age--18, naive, a freshman in college. I had much to learn about life and a lot of times it was the hard way. Glad this ended up being a pick for you! 2y
LeahBergen Great review! And let‘s not discuss the melodrama of my own teenage years. 🤣 2y

I found this book compelling from the start, but the pace of it made me stop & start. But by the time I got to the end, I was really taken with the story! Affecting, emotionally-charged. It's a coming of age story of a young woman & painter & the deeply troubled family she's with for a year in Brittany. I was reminded of Du Maurier in how the sense of place is woven into the psychological drama. You could almost taste the salty air by the sea.

batsy I also want to apologise to little Claude. I judged you harshly but you're the product of your circumstances and have endured some tough moments in life. I'm sorry for comparing you to the Children of the Corn 🙁 2y
MrsK Great review. Your du Maurier comparison was spot on. 2y

quietjenn 😂 to your Claude apology. It's very compelling. I need to make time to focus on it. 2y
Tamra Love your Claude apology! 😂 2y
jlhammar Very cool photo - love the shadows! Brilliant review. I hadn't thought of du Maurier, but yes, I can totally see that comparison. And your Claude apology! 😂 😂 😂 2y
batsy @MrsK Thank you! The writing perhaps doesn't quite hit the highs of du Maurier, but it did feel like a seaside Gothic, in a way. 2y
batsy @quietjenn @Tamra I owed it to poor Claude 😂 2y
batsy @jlhammar Thank you! It's got me craving to read a du Maurier that's new to me. 2y
Ruthiella Claude accepts your apology while he hits you on the head with his beloved football. 😂 Yes to the wonderful evocation of place. The book also made me feel the beauty of Brittany. 2y
LeahBergen 😆😆 I warmed to that nasty little Claude by the end, too. And now I want to visit Brittany! 2y
AnnR @Batsy A thoughtful review! Well done. 🙂 That is satisfying when the ending makes the rest of the book a worthwhile literary journey. My eyes perked up when I saw the comparison to Du Maurier. She does psych drama so well! 2y
CarolynM Just started. I‘ll come back when I‘ve finished🙂 2y
batsy @Ruthiella @LeahBergen 😂😂 He's wormed his way into my heart, but I'll be on guard! Yes, I really want to visit Brittany now 🤩 2y
batsy @Ann_Reads Thank you! This might be a fun read during vacation—ideally a French seaside one 😍😆 2y
batsy @CarolynM I hope you enjoy it! 2y
Cathythoughts Excellent review 👍🏻❤️ I can see and understand your du Maurier comparison. I think I‘d like to read another by this author. 2y
batsy @Cathythoughts Thank you! ❤️ Me, too. I've got my eye on this 2y
Cathythoughts Thankyou! My eye is on it now too , just stacked it. ♥️ 2y
CarolynM Great review. “Gothic” came to my mind too. The sense of place was so well done and all the English characters seemed to me to be victims of their circumstances to a greater or lesser extent. I can‘t say I ever really warmed to Claude, but I didn‘t feel it was entirely his fault. 2y
batsy @CarolynM Thank you! Victims of circumstances is quite correct. What with the father absent, as well, it fell on Cynthia to give more of herself to her children, but she wasn't able to do that. I found that aspect tragic. 2y

This coming-of-age novel reminded me of We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, in its mix of the pathetic and the monstrous. There's a sense, not just of menace, but of wrongness, that nothing is as it should be. But it's also desperately sad.

#furrowedmiddlebrowclub

batsy Nice review! I like the comparison to Jackson. 2y

I followed this story with interest and thought about it when not reading. I loved the seaside town , the metaphors and seaside influences in the writing… the little boat was ‘ rocking like a cockleshell‘ ♥️. I particularly enjoyed the build up and heightened mystery towards the end. This is one of my favourites that we‘ve read of the middlebrows. Thalia had some strong energy! Thalia ! quietjenn “Strong energy“ is such a good way of characterizing Thalia. 2y
CarolynM Great review. Brittany was almost an extra character. I felt for Thalia too. She seemed to me a case of a child desperately seeking attention, often in destructive ways. Also, she had no-one to help her deal with the dislocation she must have experienced after growing up in the Raj, then finding herself in rural France. 2y

I enjoyed this plot heavy coming of age novel set in an ex-pat colony in Brittany in the 1930s. At 18, Rachel has come to be an au pair for a year to an English family only just returned from India where the father is in the military. Rachel wants to be an artist and is quite impulsive. This doesn‘t gel with her ice-queen employer, Cynthia, who clearly favors son Claude over her ugly duckling daughter, Thalia.

Tamra Cynthia is a piece of work! 😖 2y
Ruthiella @Tamra Absolutely. To me, she and her husband are the responsible persons for the mess. And to expect an 18 year old stranger to take charge is absurd. 2y

“On this coast I have left my youth”

A toast to all the teenage girls out there trying to find their way. Had to get some Calvados to try after it was mentioned in the Breton Pardon scene. I think Yves would approve!

I was captivated by this story of a young artist‘s life-changing year in France and the portraits of 1930s girl/womanhood. Look forward to trying more Faviell, especially her memoir, A Chelsea Concerto.

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

jlhammar I thought this reflection Rachel has early on was so apt “Sometimes the painter sees more--sometimes less than the ordinary observer.“ She certainly saw both more and less throughout the novel. 2y

CarolynM Still haven‘t started. I‘ll come back when I‘ve finished. 2y
batsy Lovely review! 🥂 Nice touch with the Calvados. I've a bit more to get through but I think I largely agree with your assessment. The personal drama was quite riveting and Faviell wrote of the place really well, imo. 2y
Cathythoughts Great review ♥️. Calvados ! Good idea. I was captivated too. 2y
jlhammar @Tamra She really was. Obviously a deeply unhappy woman. Such an uncomfortable and strange family situation for Rachel to be thrown into! 2y
CarolynM Great review and perfect quote. I liked that we were given hints that things weren‘t exactly as Rachel was seeing them, but I don‘t think she was wrong about Cynthia‘s attitudes towards her children. 2y

Breton Women at a Pardon, 1887 P. Dagnan-Bouveret

“Marie did not know the exact reason for the Pardon. It was just a special one, she said, a private one without any tourists and vulgar sightseers. She stood with me, her face withdrawn, enraptured. Yves was weeping as were many of the pilgrims. The great Pardon at Mont St. Michel had failed to move me—but this one did…its simplicity was lovely.”

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

jlhammar I had to go researching Breton pardons after this section. I was interested to learn of the traditional costumes and of the ceremony's ancient origin - likely dating back to the time of the conversion of the country by Celtic monks! 2y
Ruthiella I also googled this. Fascinating! 2y

This is the first Furrowed Brow selection I‘m panning. The angst and drama was too repetitive for my taste. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I did manage to get through it though! #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella Yikes! I quite liked all the melodrama, though I also wanted everyone to see a counselor and get therapy! 😂 2y
Tamra @Ruthiella bahaha! Therapy yes…..I would have liked to eavesdrop on the sessions! I don‘t mind some melodrama to move a plot along or climax, but in this it was too frequent. Maybe I just wasn‘t in the mood. I have a teen & a nearly teen in the house so I already have plenty. 😜 (edited) 2y
Tamra The novel didn‘t seem to settle into a rhythm or flow, maybe that was the point? 2y

Sorry, but imo it was merely innuendo that moved this story along—the constant hints that there is something not quite right about Thalia, and Cynthia, and Catherine, and Madeline, etc. It‘s all so thinly veiled, the only compelling thing for me was wondering how long it would take Rachel to figure it out. #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

MrsK

My wish is that Flaviell had made Thalia the central character—seen through Rachel‘s eyes. Yes, there is something very wrong with Thalia, but why? Rachel‘s roll here only that of villain.
(edited) 2y
MrsK “It‘s a wonder if she hasn‘t done something desperate,‘ he said reproachfully. ‘You were everything to her. You taught her, helped her, encouraged her, even made her beautiful just to gratify some whim of yours. And then you took it all away. Don‘t you see? Don‘t you see what you‘ve done, Rachel?‘ (edited) 2y
MrsK ‘No. I‘m not sorry for you. You‘re only suffering from growing up. Now Thalia—that‘s the child I‘m sorry for.‘ 2y

Tamra To be honest, I‘m having difficulty getting into the flow of the writing. Maybe it will pick up? 2y
MrsK @Tamra I also had difficulty with that. It just felt uneven and jumped all over. But I will say that I loved the parts with Marie, Yves, and Madeline. Now they were interesting characters! (edited) 2y
jlhammar Oooh, such interesting thoughts! Great review. I'm almost halfway through. Eager to see how things play out. Faviell's son mentions in the afterward that this is based on her own experience in France before the war acting as a chaperone to a young teenager for the summer. I wonder how much of this is true to that experience? I'm not usually a fan of teenage narrators, but I'm not minding Rachel. Agree about Marie, Yves and Madeleine! 2y
LeahBergen Oh, how interesting! This is why I love reading a book with a group of people; we all experience it in different ways. For some reason this one really worked for me and I couldn‘t put it down. And I totally agree with you about the Breton characters. They were compelling. 2y
Ruthiella So far I‘m enjoying the plot machinations, but I typically like plot driven books. I‘m about 100 pages away from the end. Let‘s see how I feel then. 😬 (edited) 2y
Cathythoughts Great review! For myself , I did love this one, but as @LeahBergen says we all experience the books in different ways. I thought the characters great and Thalia‘s influence on so many lives ! Intriguing. 2y
MrsK @Cathythoughts So glad you liked the book. I just think it could have been better if told in a different way. Maybe then the things that were disturbing would have been explained, not have seemed like distractions (such as the insinuation of Cynthia‘s drug use). 2y
batsy I wanted to wait until I was finished to get back to your review! I ended up liking it a lot more than you did, but I definitely see where you're coming from. The innuendo was there to create the sense of dread, but a part of me also wants to know Thalia better. And I also found Marie a extremely interesting character! 2y

Rachel is packed off to France for a year to act as companion to Cynthia and her two children while their husband and father is in India. Six-year-old Claude is a horrible little thing and 15-year-old Thalia rapidly becomes obsessive and possessive about Rachel. There‘s an underlying menace from the onset and we KNOW things won‘t end well when Rachel falls in love with a local boy.

A page turner of a middlebrow read, set in 1930s Brittany.

CarolynM What did you think about the “romance”? It gave the opportunity to highlight the different attitudes of the English and the French and provided a reason for Rachel to run away, but she was such an unlikely girl for Armand to want to marry it just didn‘t convince me. 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Yes! I kept questioning his interest in her and thought some nefarious ulterior motive would pop up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really enjoyed the scenes at his weird family home. 😆 2y

On the beach, Dinard, 1928 - Pablo Picasso

One more interesting tidbit I came across today. Picasso painted there in in the 1920s.

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Kimzey Cool! 😎 2y
JamieArc Is this Dinard, France? I have fond memories of my visit there ❤️ 2y
JamieArc And after some sleuthing, I see your other posts. Stacking this book! 2y

“It was very hot and still in the September sun, and to sit on the stone terrace under the palm trees with white pebbles under our feet and drinking our coffee to the rhythmic sound of the waves beating against the steps below seemed unbelievable to me…Well, not only my aunt had palm trees! I had them too—and yuccas. It was glorious!”

Had to find some pics of Dinard. It does look glorious. Not sure I‘d want to spend a year with Claude though.

Ruthiella I‘ve not met Claude yet. But that does look beautiful! 😍 2y
MrsK Beautiful…I would brave spending time with Claude to be there😊 2y

Just doing a little internet browsing before starting our #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub pick for the month.

I didn‘t know that Faviell was a professional portrait artist and that this first edition cover illustration of Rachel, our narrator, is her work. Love that!

Bounjour and grüezi ! #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Here are my options for November. It‘s coming to the end of the year, and I‘m longing for a holiday! A trip to Brittany or the Alps? Also, we haven‘t read these authors in the club, I think.

I hope I‘m tagging everyone.

batsy Ooh! Nice ones. I'm drawn to Thalia so that gets my vote! 2y
CarolynM I‘d be happy with either, but my vote goes to 2y
Ruthiella Tagging @jlhammar too. 😀 I think I‘ll opt for the author I know and want to try more from 2y
See All 13 Comments
LeahBergen That‘s right! We haven‘t read these authors yet. Hmm… I‘m a Gibbons fan but I‘m going for the other one this month as I‘ve never read this author. My vote goes to 2y
Cathythoughts Thanks Jessie ❤️ I‘m going for 2y
MrsK They both sound like interesting reads, but my vote goes to 2y
jlhammar Thank you! I want to read them both, but my vote is for 2y
MrsK PS…new handle for me. @MrsK is just so much easier…and better 😁 2y
quietjenn This is a tough one, as they both sound great! But, I think I'll vote for 2y
elkeOriginal As I already read Swiss, my vote is 2y
Jess_Read_This I‘ve read Swiss already. But haven‘t read Thalia or anything else by that author! It‘s got my vote, please. 2y
rubyslippersreads For any Littens who haven‘t already bought it, I think this is one of the rotating free Kindle books that FM usually offers on Mondays. Which means I have it, so I‘ll vote for it. 😄 2y
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads Thanks for the tip! I‘ll check it out next Monday! See what‘s available. 2y

Pickpick

Despite showing its age in some of the sexist attitudes of side characters this was an intense read. Our narrator is helping a family on the French coast as she comes of age. Between the damaged daughter and the very flawed choices in relationships she makes it's a ride. I liked the dimension on all the characters and the comments on 'truth' the most. I'll definitely be getting more from this author from Dean Street Press.
