Eight Mountains
Eight Mountains | Paolo Cognetti
For fans of Elena Ferrante, Fredrik Backman, and Paulo Coelho comes the international sensation--now sold in more than forty territories around the world--about the friendship between two young Italian boys from different backgrounds and how their incredibly strong connection evolves, changes, and challenges them throughout their lives. Pietro is a lonely boy living in Milan. With his parents becoming more distant each day, the only thing the family shares is their love for the Dolomites, the mountains that hug the northeastern border of Italy. While on vacation at the foot of the mountains, Pietro meets Bruno, an adventurous, spirited local boy. Together they spend many summers exploring the mountain's meadows and peaks and discover the similarities and differences in their lives, their backgrounds, and their futures. The two boys come to find the true meaning of friendship and camaraderie, even as their divergent paths in life-- Bruno's in the mountains, Pietro's in cosmopolitan cities across the world--test the strength and meaning of their connection. A modern Italian masterpiece, The Eight Mountains is a lyrical coming-of-age story about the power of male friendships and the enduring bond between fathers and sons. "There are no more universal themes than those of the landscape, friendship, and becoming adults, and Cognetti's writing becomes classical (and elegant) to best tell this story...a true novel by a great writer" (Rolling Stone Italia).

Non so

Finally finished this yesterday. The film adaption of this was my favorite movie of 2023 and I‘m glad to say Cognetti‘s writing was equally elegiac and haunting. One reviewer has called this a male version of Ferrante‘s My Brilliant Friend and I don‘t think it‘s an unfair comparison. It‘s a shame more male authors don‘t write about the complexity of male friendships.

At the beginning of the novel, Pietro, the narrator, is a child who lives in Milan with his parents in the 1980s. Both parents grew up in mountain villages and take him hiking, spend every summer in a mountain hut where he meets and befriends Bruno. This is the story of their friendship which will last 30 years and the story of Pietro‘s love for the mountains. Great premise but it‘s boring and predictable

This is a beautifully written books exploring the relationship between two life-long friends, Pietro and Bruno, as well as the relationship between Pietro and his parents, and both men‘s relationship with the mountains in which Bruno lives and which Pietro explores. But I don‘t think it‘s really my genre. I found it nice, but nothing more.

I found this book very charming. It is so evocative of the romantic notion of the mountains. If you like being in the mountains or dreaming about them, you might want to pick up this book. #catsoflitsy

A bit disappointed by this Italian novel that got raving reviews in the Dutch media.
It is the story of two friends who grow up together in the Italian Alps. When they get older they grow apart but there are always the mountains that reminds them of the importance of their friendship.
I‘ll give it a pick because it is beautifully written, the dialogues as well as the descriptions of the mountains.

A picturesque and thoughtful book where not a lot happens, but you will be transported to the Italian alps and feel the seasons of the mountains and the work that the villagers need to do to survive. 3.5 stars for me.
This is my closest mountain at the moment - Putuaki - like almost all the other mountains in the North Island it‘s a volcano.

ephemeralwaltz Yes!! This has recently been on my radar. 6y
Centique @ephemeralwaltz it very much felt like being in the alps. All my Heidi feelings renewed 😍 6y
