Dispatches from the Edge
Dispatches from the Edge | Anderson Cooper
12 posts | 19 read | 10 to read
Few people have witnessed more scenes of chaos and conflict around the world than Anderson Cooper, whose groundbreaking coverage on CNN has changed the way we watch the news. In this gripping, candid, and remarkably powerful memoir, he offers an unstinting, up-close view of the most harrowing crises of our time, and the profound impact they have had on his life. After growing up on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Cooper felt a magnetic pull toward the unknown, an attraction to the far corners of the earth. If he could keep moving, and keep exploring, he felt he could stay one step ahead of his past, including the fame surrounding his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the tragic early deaths of his father and older brother. As a reporter, the frenetic pace of filing dispatches from war-torn countries, and the danger that came with it, helped him avoid having to look too closely at the pain and loss that was right in front of him. But recently, during the course of one extraordinary, tumultuous year, it became impossible for him to continue to separate his work from his life, his family's troubled history from the suffering people he met all over the world. From the tsunami in Sri Lanka to the war in Iraq to the starvation in Niger and ultimately to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi, Cooper gives us a firsthand glimpse of the devastation that takes place, both physically and emotionally, when the normal order of things is violently ruptured on such a massive scale. Cooper had been in his share of life-threatening situations before -- ducking fire on the streets of war-torn Sarejevo, traveling on his own to famine-stricken Somalia, witnessing firsthand the genocide in Rwanda -- but he had never seen human misery quite like this. Writing with vivid memories of his childhood and early career as a roving correspondent, Cooper reveals for the first time how deeply affected he has been by the wars, disasters, and tragedies he has witnessed, and why he continues to be drawn to some of the most perilous places on earth. Striking, heartfelt, and utterly engrossing, Dispatches from the Edge is an unforgettable memoir that takes us behind the scenes of the cataclysmic events of our age and allows us to see them through the eyes of one of America's most trusted, fearless, and pioneering reporters.

Anderson Cooper was the speaker for Brick City Weekend (Parents weekend/Homecoming) at my son‘s school, RIT. He was funny and adorable and I want to read his books now.

Listening to it in his own words is what (I think) made a difference! I loved this book. The discretion of Katrina was all to painful and familiar. Brought me right back there.

Sleepswithbooks I just added this to my tbr... thank you. It looks amazing! 6y

Raw, brave, and moving. Anderson Cooper writes beautifully, and presents his account as it is, not fearing that his honesty would taint his image. Life is evanescent; how fortunate and undeserving are we of the comforts that we have. Disaster, war, famine, death—these are all equalizers. We see it everyday on the news, yet we digest it nonchalantly like our dinner in front of the TV. How dare we forget? How dare we take everything for granted?

The map of the world is always changing; sometimes it happens overnight. All it takes is the blink of an eye, the squeeze of a trigger, a sudden gust of wind. Wake up and your life is perched on a precipice; fall asleep, it swallows you whole.

Finally started this one tonight, and why did I wait so long?

I‘ve long been fond of Anderson Cooper. I can still recall his reporting on Channel One during home room 24 years ago. This book opens on New Year‘s Eve after the Tsunami and quickly shifts to Sri Lanka.

I majored in communications and by the time I‘d earned my degree, I knew I‘d never be a journalist.

This is a beautiful book written by Anderson Cooper. He writes about Hurricanes, tsunamis, and war torn places he has visited. He connects the pain & suffering he sees around him to the pain of losing his brother. Every word is carefully chosen and every detail feels important. I think we like to think we're safe from pain. Maybe money can protect us or maybe family or education. But that's a false idea as this book demonstrates so well.

Anderson Cooper describing politician's reaction or lack of reaction and help during hurricane Katrina.

Zelma Very true statement. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Zelma I think we want our politicians to do more and speak less. But during Katrina neither happened. 8y

Amazon has another book promo - $5 off $15. So, I ordered this book by the Silver Fox, aka Andy Coops, aka Anderson Cooper.

I need to stop buying books. I may have a reading problem 🤔

BookishMarginalia No problem. No problem at all. 8y

The farther you go...the harder it is to return. The world has many edges and it's easy to fall off.
