Testing the Current
Testing the Current | William McPherson

Growing up in a small upper Midwestern town in the late 1930s, young Tommy MacAllister is scarcely aware of the Depression, much less the rumblings of war in Europe. For his parents and their set, life seems to revolve around dinners and dancing at the country club, tennis dates and rounds of golf, holiday parties, summers on the Island, and sparkling occasions full of people and drinks and food and laughter. But curious as he is and impatient to grow up, Tommy will soon come to glimpse the darkness that lies beneath so much genteel complacency: hidden histories and embarrassing poor relations; the subtle (and not so subtle) slighting of the help; the mockery of President Roosevelt; and the commandment they talked least about in Sunday school, adultery. In Testing the Current William McPherson subtly sets off his wide-eyed protagonists perspective with mature reflection and wry humor and surrounds him with a cast of vibrant characters, creating a scrupulously observed portrait of a place and time that will shimmer in readers minds long after the final page is turned.

This book is not what I was expecting but it's wonderful! It's set in a town that I believe is a fictional Sault Ste. Marie in the Michigan Upper Peninsula. It's set in the late 30s and written from the POV of an intelligent eight year old boy. It makes me think of those Christmas villages people add to every year, like you're opening the doors to all these houses and spying on their inhabitants, observing their behaviors and interactions.

AlaMich But all from a child's perspective, so he doesn't completely understand this world of adults, but the reader does. So it's a tableau really, without a plot, where there is gossip, judgments, affairs, family squabbles, etc. #summerread #michiganlove (edited) 7y

AlaMich @LauraBeth It's such a great portrait of life in this place, at this time, drawn by a sensitive, smart, observant boy. 7y

Beginning my #vacationread a little in advance. We are going to Traverse City in Michigan (northern lower Michigan, not the Upper Peninsula) in about 10 days. There will be a mini-reunion of sorts with some aunts, an uncle, a cousin or two. The book is set in northern Michigan in the 30s, though I'm not sure where exactly. Scandalous goings-on and whatnot...😉#summerread #nyrb

LauraBrook Ooh, 1930s? Michigan? NYRB? Color me intrigued! #stacked 7y
