4⭐️ A re-read with the bookclub. I love Patrick Hamilton 😍 and I love this book. It‘s funny and enjoyable, and the boarding house setting adds on to the fun. Enjoy this book with a serving of gin and french🍸

One of the best character driven novels I‘ve read in a while. I love the way Hamilton depicts Miss Roach & her thought process, so transparent & relatable in some ways - you could call her naive but I also think a lot of people have had a Vicki in their lives; someone who makes you question if it‘s you reading the person wrong of if they are just not nice! I was just willing Miss Roach to stand up for herself. Five star read for me.

During WWII Miss Roach lives in a boardinghouse outside of London. She is bullied by one of the other tenants, but can handle it because she is having ‘her own American man‘ to drink and kiss with. She is so naive, but she is strong and admirable as well, especially when the bullying increases with the arrival of a German friend in the boardinghouse.
Another quiet and great #NYRB classic.

4⭐️ Boarding house politics! People can be so cruel, even during depressing time like WWII. Well, actually bad times merely accentuate the dark sides of humanity. Patrick Hamilton‘s excellent depictions of the bullies made me want to slap them. Can‘t they just leave the poor spinster alone? 😩 Be kind to one another, people✌🏻
