The New York Times bestselling series hailed as "gripping" (People magazine) and "compelling" (USA Today) returns with Police Chief Kate Burkholder called to the scene of a horrific tragedy on a peaceful Amish farm. The Slabaugh family are model Amish farmers, prosperous and hardworking, with four children and a happy extended family. When the parents and an uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears to be a gruesome accident: methane gas asphyxiation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit. But in the course of a routine autopsy, the coroner discovers that one of the victims suffered a head wound before death--clearly, foul play was involved. But who would want to make orphans of the Slabaughs' children? And is this murder somehow related to a recent string of shocking hate crimes against the Amish? Having grown up Amish, Kate is determined to bring the killer to justice. Because the other series of attacks are designated hate crimes, the state sends in agent John Tomasetti, with whom Kate has a long and complex relationship. Together, they search for the link between the crimes--and uncover a dark secret at work beneath the placid surface of this idyllic Amish community. Chock full of twists and chills and set against the unusual world of the Amish, this series "will delight fans of Chelsea Cain and Thomas Harris" (USA Today).

I am loving these Amish mysteries so much. This one too is twisty and riveting. Chief of Police Kate Burkholder grew up Amish and she‘s a perfect fit for keeping the peace in Painters Mill, an Amish community in Ohio

4⭐
𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐒⇩
-This one wasn‘t quite as graphic as the first two…but it was still shocking and sad.
-It delves into Kate‘s past a little bit more.
-Tomasetti has managed to endear himself to me somewhat with this one.
-I wish I could have more narrators but since I can‘t at least this narrator does a great job with the narration.
𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒⇩
-The plot got a little awkward…
-It took a while to hook me in.

Third in the Kate Burkholder Amish mystery-thriller series. I love these books because the author makes writes hard-hitting crimes and investigations. This one started a little slower than previous books, but about halfway thru there was a major plot twist that quickened the pacing for me. Lots of twists and turns in the second half. I really liked it!

Along the lines of the other Kate Burkholder books. Plot twist at the end.

I see a trend with this series... Action packed, thriller material with some gruesome details. You don't want to know, and yet you can't stop reading until you get to the end. I do enjoy the fact that it has managed to shock me, and there is interesting character development, too. #recentlyread #nospoilers #Amishfiction #femalepolicechief #thrillerseries ⚠️😳 📖 🤯

Enjoying this #crime series focused around the chief of police in a small Amish town. This is the third in the series and I've listened to all of them on #audio (usually while cleaning the house). The books are fast paced, focused around a central crime yet detailed enough to invest in the characters and their interpersonal relationships. Even better, they distract me during mundane cleaning chores! Highly recommended.

EvieBee I need to get back into this series! I always get scared when I read them because they are legit thrillers but I think I'm ready for that now. 7y
cathysaid Yes, "crime thriller" is probably a better description because there are certainly many intense scenes! 7y

Whatannareads How did you find this book Hun x 7y
Redjewel_7734 @Whatannareads The link is to an article, not a book. It's an article is part of the Fragility series on Bitch Media. They are a great feminist magazine that I found from a link to an article somewhere else. They give me a window into viewpoints that are not always easy to find in my white E KY bubble 😊 (edited) 7y
