Siege and Storm
Siege and Storm | Leigh Bardugo
Darkness never dies. Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can't outrun her past or her destiny for long. The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling's game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm. Siege and Storm is the second book in The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.

I agree with other Litsy readers that Nikolai is the best part of this book; otherwise, this feels like yet another frustrating YA romantsy, where Alina could have solved most of her problems with Mal by communicating better.

Torn a bit between Pick and So-So for this one but think So-So most appropriate as I found this quite difficult to get into. The second half was wayyyy better and I am looking forward to reading the conclusion to the trilogy.

Same as the first one: a short, fast-paced read but still underwhelming — most likely my fault as I expected too much from this series.

On to the third book!

// I was on vacation this past week so I didn‘t finish it as quickly as I‘d hoped but I still read everyday. 100 days on my Kindle streak! Woohoo!

I can see why some of the politics were left out of the TV show, but it did add flavour to the story. The drama between Mal & Alina is irritating as it could have been solved by a single conversation (always annoying as a literary trope). Somehow, I missed how the original coup failed, so I'm still not sure what happened there. The confrontation between Alina & Darkling was very poetic & would have been a good ending. Bring on the next one.

Overall a good story, but it wasn't as exciting as the first. YA relationship fixation bubbled over more than I'd have liked but wasn't the worst. The world building and cultural themes are fantastic.

Kindle ed: Excerpts from two other books makes it seem like the book will never end, compounding the dragging middle effect (the book itself as well as being #2 in the series). Keep track of the chapters so you don't give up right before the end.

I enjoyed this one, but I have realised I have definitely aged out of YA fantasy.

I will finish the series via audiobook though.

I listened to the audiobook via BorrowBox,
It was not bad/was enjoyble.

A satisfying end to the trilogy but I am not inclined to read anything more of Bardugo or the grishaverse. Too many great books to read. The romantic in me was satisfied that true love eventually prevailed.

I enjoyed the second book a lot more than the first and I think that is mostly because of the addition of Prince Nikolai. Loved him so much and the twins were great adds to the story ❤️❤️and can‘t wait to read his duology after I finish Ruin and Rising. Most of the time just wanted to slap Alina and Mal lol but that‘s YA sometimes 😂

Enjoyed the second book in this series (Shadow and Bone) - Alina's self doubt about her ability and role did wear a bit thin in the middle - but then the story picked back up and ended with me excited to read the last book and see how it all turns out.

My niece gifted me the first book in the tagged book series - fell in love with it and now am reading the 2nd book, 3rd book in my possession - so my reading plans changed a bit -
Finish Grishaverse trilogy (1 1/2 to go) and read Run Time by Catherine Howard - my guess is that will get me to the new year.

I‘m just powering through these I guess. My review of book 1 actually said I like how Bardugo writes YA that doesn‘t make me roll my eyes BUT

Alina seems to find it impossible to just be friends with the selection of hot men she‘s around, so despite being in lifelong love with one of them she‘s thinking of kissing all of them but him.🙄🙄🙄

Still, action-packed beginning & end, slower, angsty stuff in the middle, & fun new characters.

Lauranahe When I read the six of crows books, in my head I have to make them older, at least mid-twenties. Otherwise, I feel a little weird about Kaz being my book boyfriend. 😂 Have you seen fan art of him?? 😍 I do like the guy who plays him on the show. 2y

jenreads7 @Lauranahe Perfect! 😂 I haven‘t seen much fan art, and I haven‘t seen the show either. 🙈 2y
Lauranahe I watched the show first, and really liked it. So then I read shadow and bone book. Halfway through the book, I was getting annoyed. Where is Kaz?? I googled it, and learned he has his own series, and his storyline in the show was a prequel to his series. After that, I was able to enjoy the shadow and bones books. But as soon I finished, I went out and got the six of crows. AND it made me appreciate the show more. (edited) 2y
jenreads7 @Lauranahe That‘s awesome! Have you read the King of Scars duology yet? That‘s next for me! And The Lives of Saints, of course! 2y

The story picks up right where it left off with Alina and Mal in hiding and on the run from the Darkling. Alina changes significantly in this book as she claims more of her power. A huge chunk of the book is just them traveling on the road and it was SLOOOW. Great writing, but not as much action in this one. Not until the very end.

It was a little slow in the middle, but there was enough drama between the characters to keep me going and keep me in anticipation. I really enjoyed it and it ended on the perfect cliffhanger to lead me into the final book. The characters are really going through it and I can‘t wait to see what happens…

This book was also good. It takes place across the True Sea with Alina and Mal hiding from the Darkling and his forces. After an encounter with him, they sail wayward to the Bone Road for the second amplifier.
If you enjoyed this book or any in this series, I suggest either the Magnus Chase series or the Kane Chronicles, as both are similar when it comes to their descriptions of different creatures.

I‘m surprised by the low ratings for book 2 in the series ; But then again our reading is a personal experience. I thought it had a slow start but picked up pace after around 100pages ; love the character of Nikolai and the tangled love affairs between Alina , Mal, Zoya and Nikolai , it was pure escapism for me and I personally loved it , now on to the others . Love a series 😆

Fantasy, YA. This is the second book in the series and it does not disappoint. Alina & Mal are forced out of hiding to battle the Darkling and save Ravka whose King & Queen are incompetent. However, their estranged second son is a worthy leader if only he was first in line to the throne. Nickolai joins Alina & Mal in a contentious relationship to save their land, but the Darkling is more powerful than any of them believed possible.

As second books go, this one held it's own against the "second book curse". Alina's narrative drug a few times for me but the story was really pretty good. A lot of times you get romance focused fantasy in YA, but Alina is often too busy being a badass to have time to worry too much about her love interests. I like the change of pace and the tone she sets for younger readers.

I ship Alina/Mal on the run forever. Ruin and Rising up next!

Four stars of YA enjoyment which demanded little of me. A strong middle book in a trilogy, Siege & Storm offers everything you‘d expect, action, sexual tension, betrayal, mystery, plenty of red herrings, all packaged within a pretty well-tested narrative and character arc. A great escapist read.

So I get it. The series is addictive. Thinking back to my 12 year old self, I would have probably been obsessed. I can see the appeal to young readers: it is age appropriate but delves into grown-up issues like pain, loss, sorrow, defeat, love and longing. Young peoole feel all of the above often more acutely than adults whose senses have dulled over the decades. Cannot wait to find out what happens next and have a secret crush on the Darkling. 😳

I loved “Shadow and Bone,” so I had high hopes—and I was not disappointed! Bardugo allows her universe to become significantly darker than in the first book, introduces a whole new, fantastic, crew of characters, and ends with a real tearjerker. If you didn‘t like the first book, this probably also won‘t be for you, but I found it thrilling from beginning to end.

I think I liked this more the first time around. You can see Alina trying to come into her own more which I great but she's still very much in the background when it comes to Mal. I'm hoping she finds her way to becoming the badass I can see her being 🤷‍♀️

#2021Book60
I enjoyed this book way more than the first one, probably because there is way less world-building and a lot more plot in this one. I also really liked the new characters that were introduced in this book. My biggest complaint with this book (and probably the series as a whole) is the fact that the main love interest is so busy being a whiny, jealous brat that it makes no sense why the main character continues to be in love with him.

I actually struggled to get into this book, but by the middle I was hooked. I liked a lot of the characters who were introduced in this part of the story, and all the characters from the previous book had some character development. I am actually surprised how emotionally real those characters are. They had human responses to trying circumstances. Unlike most heroes, they weren't perfect.

A great book to lead us into the last part of the trilogy.
