Confusion
Confusion | Neal Stephenson
In the year 1689, a cabal of Barbary galley slaves -- including one Jack Shaftoe, aka King of the Vagabonds, aka Half-Cocked Jack -- devises a daring plan to win freedom and fortune. A great adventure ensues -- a perilous race for an enormous prize of silver ... nay, gold ... nay, legendary gold.In Europe, the exquisite and resourceful Eliza, Countess de la Zeur, is stripped of her immense personal fortune by France's most dashing privateer. Penniless and at risk from those who desire either her or her head (or both), she is caught up in a web of international intrigue, even as she desperately seeks the return of her most precious possession.Meanwhile, Newton and Leibniz continue to propound their grand theories as their infamous rivalry intensifies, stubborn alchemy does battle with the natural sciences, dastardly plots are set in motion ... and Daniel Waterhouse seeks passage to the Massachusetts colony in hopes of escaping the madness into which his world has descended. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

I only managed to read 7 hours and listen to 4 hours of an audiobook for the #24B4Monday readathon. However, I finally finished this 900-page tome which I‘d been working on for the past couple of months, so I‘d say the weekend was a success! Thanks to @TheReadingMermaid and @Andrew65 for hosting.

BeansPage Still a very good reading time. I'm sure you'll do better next month too 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid Well done on a great effort 👍😊👏, thanks for playing along and well done on finishing that chunkster. 😁 6y
Kristelh Did you like it? This is one of my favorite authors. 6y

kwmg40 @Kristelh I did like it, though not as much as Quicksilver. I‘m a huge Stephenson fan too. In case the different username threw you off, I‘m mathgirl40 at LibraryThing who ran the Stephenson group read. 😀 6y
Kristelh Oh, good to know. Have you read Reamde? Seveneves? 6y
kwmg40 @Kristelh I‘ve not read Reamde yet but I loved Seveneves. 6y
Kristelh I really enjoyed Reamde. There is a bit of everything in that one. 6y
kwmg40 @Kristelh Good to know. It‘s definitely on my wishlist now! 6y

Spotted a number six. On to number seven... #six #countingbooks Thoroughly enjoying Neal Stephenson's wordsmithery (is wordsmithery a word?) and world-building. It's the book, and series of books, that the phrase 'sprawling epic' could have been designed for

Anyone else having weirdness with notification and times today? For instance, after I check my notifications, the red bubble with the number goes away ... but when I close the app it comes back. (No, I‘m pretty sure I didn‘t get 46 likes in 3 seconds.) And I just commented on something minutes ago, and the person responded just now, but when I look for it, the app shows it as “5h” ... is it a time zone issue?

wanderinglynn I haven‘t had that issue, but I have experienced some other issues, like error messages that I then have to close the app & reopen. 7y
jfalkens I'm having that issue too! 7y
jfalkens And my profile disappeared twice so far 7y

JacqMac Yes. And yes. They have posted on FB that they are working on the glitches that happened when they changed servers. 7y
GarthRanzz I‘m having the same trouble. Seems everything since the move shows like 5 minutes even though they are older. And every time I try to access my info it causes the app to stop responding, throwing out errors. If I stay away from my info everything works fine. 7y
TrishB I‘m getting those! At one point it told me I had 264 notifications!! Then they‘d disappear.... but they weren‘t really there... 7y
Chrissyreadit I feel better now. 7y
RohitSawant I've been experiencing some weirdness with the notifications, too. 7y
JoScho Mine is doing the exact same thing 7y
CSeydel Aha. Good, it‘s not just me. I‘m sure they‘ll get it sorted out. 7y
Jess7 They‘re updating the system. Tim Spalding mentioned the little mini resets he did on Facebook today. You‘re not alone 7y

✨Soo Litsy is finalllllly back up!!! Yay!! I'm a little confused as to why it was down when I don't seem to notice any changes? I also have yet to start using #LibraryThing. Can anyone explain to me the point in Litsy servers being down? What's different? Also, is Library Thing worth getting use to a new app? 🙈

laurieluna There wasn't any changes I don't think, they were just moving all of the app systems and all of our posts etc over to the Library Thing servers. I've been exploring Library Thing in the down time. Seemed clunky at first but I'm getting used to it 😊 7y
bookswithbec They transferred the info to different servers 7y
abbsinwonderland @miralunasbooknook @bookswithbec ahhh so there will probably be another apocalypse when they want to implement changes. So since they transferred everything, does that affect Litsys book catalogue? Or will that have to be in a different update type of deal? Like are Library Things books now option to choose on here? Since Litsy has so many duplicates 7y
See All 28 Comments
abbsinwonderland @miralunasbooknook Do you have cons and pros figured out yet? Or still just getting use to it? 7y
bookswithbec I‘m not sure what they are doing next. Tim (the owner of LibraryThing) keeps everyone in the known in the Onward Litsy group on fb 7y
laurieluna @abbsinwonderland I think it was purely a migration of the app etc. We'll probably have more downtime in our future if they implement any other changes. They didn't mention any other updates/changes. X 7y
abbsinwonderland @bookswithbec yes, I'm in the group. Hard to find relevant posts tho 😔I'll do a deep dive there. Thank you! 7y
abbsinwonderland Change makes me nervous 🙈 7y
CouronneDhiver We just hopped to a new server... very important but not very “glamorous” where changes are concerned. 7y
abbsinwonderland @CouronneDhiver I'm a techie 😆 I understand the importance, just wasn't sure if they were gonna do our suggestions this time around or not. That's what I'm nervous about. 7y
DGRachel My understanding is that this was purely a server migration-no changes. Apparently, a few accounts had issues with missing posts and TBR lists, but I don‘t think it was widespread, but people panicked. LT and Litsy are very different. I use LT to catalog my books, but I don‘t use any of the social features. I like that I can scan in my purchases and check my personal library from my phone so I don‘t buy something I already own. 7y
jfalkens @abbsinwonderland it makes me nervous too 7y
lorannen @DGRachel Can confirm, you're correct! Just a server migration - no changes at this time. We're investigating reports from a few members who had trouble. TBR and Read list issues were short-lived. 7y
LitDrivenGirl I've been a member on LT for almost 11 years. Their app is a great feature, but best used (imo) for scanning your books in. The desktop site is where most of the features are more easily accessed and utilized. I love the site, but I'm also really obsessed with data/numbers for book collection ? so maybe that explains it. I recommend LT to so many friends and customers! We've even joked about hosting "how to's" at our shop. 7y
abbsinwonderland @LitDrivenGirl I think I seen something about paying for premium LT? Do you know anything about that? Or maybe @lorannen can help with that, too? 7y
abbsinwonderland Or @kgriffith ? Im sure you guys are getting tons of mentions!! 7y
LitDrivenGirl @abbsinwonderland membership is $10 a year or $25 a lifetime. I signed up for the lifetime all those years ago and don't regret it. You can catalog 200 books free. Over the years they have made it so you can catalog your CDs, DVDs, and vinyls too 😊. 7y
abbsinwonderland @LitDrivenGirl What all comes with the premium as oppose to the regular? Or is a membership necessary? 7y
kgriffith We‘re waiving fees for Littens; you shouldn‘t hit a cap but if you do let us know and we‘ll upgrade you :) The app is strictly for cataloging, it‘s very good at what it‘s meant for, and everything else is very robust and customizable on the desktop site. That‘s also where the Talk forums are. 7y
LitDrivenGirl @abbsinwonderland the membership gives you the ability to catalog more. A free account you can only catalog up to 200 books (or other media). You still have access to what the site offers with the free account, just the limit on catalog count is in place. I'll answer questions all day about LT because that's how much I like what they do for book lovers 😉. On LT I'm books_ofa_feather 7y
abbsinwonderland @LitDrivenGirl ooooh I see! Thank you!!! You've been a ton of help, I may just have to take the chance and go down the rabbit hole of LT 7y
abbsinwonderland @kgriffith whaaaaaaat?! No way! That's awesome of you guys! Thanks for all your help, also. 😆😆 7y
kgriffith @abbsinwonderland welcome! 😁 7y
tonyahoswalt @kgriffith Is the upgrade only for new LT users that are Littens, or does it include old LT users that have returned to it solely because of Litsy? 7y
kgriffith @tonyahoswalt I‘m not back “in the office” until tomorrow after my morning class so I don‘t have an official answer, but if you hit a cap at 200, comment on one of my Litsy posts or on my wall on LibraryThing to let me know. It may be temporarily lifted across the board; I‘m unsure as I don‘t work on the .com side, but I can ask tomorrow! 7y
ablachly @tonyahoswalt it‘s for anyone who uses Litsy. We‘re going to come up with a more automated way to do it, but for now just email litsy@librarything.com with your usernames on both sites and we‘ll get the LT one upgraded. 7y

@BarbaraTheBibliophage the number is lower for me today, but still not #29!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow - that‘s weird. And not good. Ugh. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Here‘s what I found. The numbers (70 vs 29) are different on my iPad vs iPhone. So maybe that‘s why? Different platforms? 7y
VanChocStrawberry That makes sense, but it‘s frustrating! 7y
VanChocStrawberry And what are all these other book apps? Kindle, etc I can see...but that‘s only a handful. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @VanChocStrawberry I looked through the Books category today. There are lots of copies of The Bible, other books-as-an-app, book cataloguing apps, many I didn‘t investigate. It‘s frustratingly unclear. 7y

Pickpick

Part of his Baroque Cycle, The Confusion, along with Quicksilver and The System of the World, effortlessly weaves a wealth of historical fact into a page turning adventure story. Science, architecture, history, pirates, alchemy, courtly intrigues, all are present, and the story is littered with real historical figures brought vividly to life. I learned more reading this series than I did in school! essential reading

It is the late 1600s on the high seas. A group of Barbary galley slaves plot as they ply the oars of a pirate ship, hatching a daring scheme to find an enormous cache of Spanish gold. Amazingly, they succeed - leaving some very unhappy men behind who vow to hunt down the vagabonds and bring them to justice, no matter the cost. -review to follow
