The Worm and the Bird
The Worm and the Bird | Coralie Bickford-Smith
11 posts | 11 read | 15 to read
A new, beautifully illustrated picture book from the bestselling author of The Fox and the Star, winner of Waterstones Book of the Year 2015. Deep below the earth, Worm dreams of having more space. There's not much room down there. Above, Bird waits, through sun and rain and wind. As the day goes on, will they both find what they are looking for? From the author of The Fox and the Star, this is a book about searching and hoping, and how the smallest moment can be beautiful.

This is beautifully designed as you would expect from Coralie Bickford-Smith. The front endpapers are cute little earthworm designs and the back are the black bird. The illustrations flip between the earthworm wanting space and putting things off, and the bird waiting above. Just Lovely.

Mehso-so

I found it difficult to rate this book as a So-So. It could not be more beautifully illustrated. Even the endpapers are a work of art.

But there wasn‘t much of a story. Or maybe I just didn‘t get it.

Nonetheless, this book is an absolute feast for the eyes.

Lacythebookworm Beautiful illustrations! 6y
Lindy From the description, that it‘s a book about searching and hoping, and seeing the smallest things as beautiful, it doesn‘t sound like a plot-based book. It does sound like one I would like. 6y
Libby1 I think you‘re right, @Lindy . I wasn‘t expecting it to be plot heavy but reached the last page and thought, “HUH?” I read it through a couple more times and checked that I hadn‘t missed a page, too. It is an exceptionally beautiful book, though. I hope you enjoy it if you come across it some day. 💙 6y
Libby1 @Lacythebookworm - they are beyond gorgeous. 6y

So excited to finally see Coralie Bickford-Smith's new book! While The Fox and The Star will always be special and entrancing, this one is still great. The story doesn't grab me as much as her first book did - it's a little less detailed. Her first book was very evocative, and this one is so-so. But the images are still wonderful!!

Last nights bedtime story was an autumnal delight. Beware some mild peril and an occasional sense of dread. Mainly be prepared to be stunned by its beauty.
