"A rare and exquisite story . . . Transports you out of time, out of place, into a world you can feel on your very skin." Elizabeth Gilbert The New York Times bestseller by Janice Y.K. Lee, author of the upcoming novel The Expatriates, due out in January 2016 In the sweeping tradition of The English Patient, Janice Y.K. Lee's debut novel is a tale of love and betrayal set in war-torn Hong Kong. In 1942, Englishman Will Truesdale falls headlong into a passionate relationship with Trudy Liang, a beautiful Eurasian socialite. But their affair is soon threatened by the invasion of the Japanese as World War II overwhelms their part of the world. Ten years later, Claire Pendleton comes to Hong Kong to work as a piano teacher and also begins a fateful affair. As the threads of this spellbinding novel intertwine, impossible choices emerge-between love and safety, courage and survival, the present, and above all, the past. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was going to be my #booked2022 for set in China but am now not quite sure. This is a split timeline 1940s and 1950s and I am not quite sure what the -950s added overall. For me this book was spoiled by reading so soon after the significantly better Gift of Rain as there are some similarities re settings in British colonial Asia and covering the challenges of WW2 and survival 📷 the Hong Kong Commonwealth War Cemetary taken in 2909

My inlaws recently moved to town and my husband went to visit. He brought home this book from my MIL. I squealed because I need a new book and he rolled his eyes at me! My husband is NOT a reader. He doesn't get it.

Mollyanna Beautiful cover! I would have squealed too! 😄 6y

Now that I bailed on a book I am ready to curl up with something new. Any input? I have The Piano Teacher by Janice Y K Lee; The Echo Chamber by Luke Williams; and In America by Susan Sontag. I love Sontag but I actually am a piano teacher. I have never read Luke Williams but the philosophical nature of The Echo Chamber is right in my wheelhouse...

rmaclean4 I really enjoyed The Piano Teacher. 6y
Lcsmcat I second @rmaclean4 ‘s opinion. 6y

GatheringBooks @Cinfhen agreed! 🙌🏽 7y
SledgeReader @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m not sure why I always link Hotel on the Corner and The Piano Teacher. Probably because I read them both with the same book group and recall great discussions for both. The Piano Teacher evoked images of war/invasion from an unusual perspective. This is one I intend to read again in my “spare” time. @GatheringBooks What did you think? 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Looks good! Stacked it. 6y

I found this to be a nice quiet story. It did pick up towards the end & it was an interesting look into the Hong King Expat world of WWII & the early 50's. I just found it hard to get invested in any of the characters. I never quite found my way into the story, rather I found myself at a remove, looking in but wondering why I'm bothering.

Will's story spans decades. He is an enigma. The story flashes forward and backward as it tries to explain how Will becomes a driver after loving and losing in war torn Japan. I liked the historical insights of British expatriates and their suffering in interment camps as well as natives forced to succumb or die. I enjoyed the comparison between his two women and their relationship. Not an easy read but worth the effort.

I just started this after a string of "meh" books, and so far it does not disappoint.
