The Weird
The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories | Jeff VanderMeer, Ann VanderMeer
From Lovecraft to Borges to Gaiman, a century of intrepid literary experimentation has created a corpus of dark and strange stories that transcend all known genre boundaries. Together these stories form The Weird and amongst its practitioners number some of the greatest names in twentieth and twenty-first century literature. Exotic and esoteric, The Weird plunges you into dark domains and brings you face to face with surreal monstrosities; you won't find any elves or wizards here... but you will find the boldest and downright most peculiar stories from the last hundred years bound together in the biggest Weird collection ever assembled. The Weird features an all star cast of authors, from classics to international bestsellers to Booker prize winners. Here are Ben Okri and George R.R. Martin, Angela Carter and Kelly Link, Franz Kafka and China Miville, Clive Barker and Haruki Murakami, M.R. James and Neil Gaiman, Mervyn Peake and Michael Chabon, Stephen King and Daphne Du Maurier.

I did it, I finished the book, it is physically too big but there sure are a lot of stories! I liked quite a few of them! (I think! Don't ask me about what I read 5 years ago!)

Like 3 weeks ago I'd assumed that I'd once again be vowing to finish this book come 2022, but last week I did a quick count and realized that I could finish this behemoth before Halloween if I stick to a story a day! I haven't slipped yet, so I'm feeling pretty pleased.

Finished up this anthology. Many excellent stories included. Recommended for horror fans. My favourite is Algernon Blackwood's 'The Willows'

I'm not one for resolutions, but I have some for 2021, namely finish this monster. I can do it! (Also, fewer preorders, since I got burned last year and have signed up for ANOTHER book box [not to mention contemplating Verso's ebook subscription].)

#FallIsBooked Day 25: It is pretty clear that the ‘weird tales‘ in this collection go beyond the mere presence of ghosts, zombies, or glittering #vampire in high school, or werewolves with six-pack abs as can be seen from the Introduction of the Vandermeers above. What makes this collection stand out for me is the effort to include luminous writers coming from outside the US-UK and Western canon. More of my thoughts here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-8Fh

Me and my wall that is entirely mirrors just read a scary story about mirrors, but the thing that sets me and my wall apart from the story is that me and my wall don't hate women. #TheHungryHouse

Did some late night book rearranging, trying to get all my short story collections on one shelf. I failed.

I am trying to read a short story a day, give them the respect of being the only one, but I also worry that it's eating into my novel reading time, because why shouldn't I worry about the thing I do for fun? Would I even be alive if I didn't?!?!

khooliha Also also, I'm chipping my way through the tagged cinder block again and the last story (White Rabbits)? Actually creepy! Congrats The Weird! 6y

#31BookPics Day 21: Another #DNF from the Vandermeers - again not because it isn‘t good - but because it is SOOOO good, I have to purchase a copy for myself. This is a library book and I realize that with the Vandermeers, their books will have to be purchased to fully appreciate. Another book to consider for Christmas. 🤣😂😭🧚🏼‍♀️📚

ReadingEnvy I have a VanderMeer shelf with all of their anthologies. I may read them someday. ;) 6y

I have this huge dark fantasy short story compendium on my Nook shelf. I'm terrible at reading short stories, I like the character development of novels. But I like the idea of short stories, and think it's good to read them. So I sit down and read one story after each longer book that I finish.

Also in #bookishbirthdays: H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), one of the founding fathers of weird fiction. I've been thinking a lot about his complicated, difficult legacy - as a writer and as an influence - a lot today. I think it's something his fans (myself included) should grapple with more. Anyway, I pulled some volumes of his stuff off the shelf. I love these covers (and, as mentioned, the anthology is essential).

BookishFeminist I love him too and have a very complicated relationship with his writing since so much of it reflects that he was a racist pig. Have you read any of the newer retellings of Lovecraft like Lovecraft Country and The Ballad of Black Tom? Both are excellent and specifically deal with his racism & flips it around. 8y
MrBook Big fan 😎👍🏻! 8y
brendanmleonard @BookishFeminist I have not but have been meaning to pick that up. I think acknowledging he is a racist pig is more than some fans are willing to do. It's a big problem in Lovecraft scholarship particularly since the racism/fear of the other is so ingrained as to be inseparable in the work, but there are too many people making excuses IMO. There's a new biography out later this year that supposedly grapples with race that I'm excited to read. 8y

ElizaTodd @brendanmleonard I loved The King in Yellow!!! 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard IT'S SO TRUE THOUGH. I'm not sure why people equate being a fan of someone's work with worship of them as a person and refuse to find problems in their work even if they're intrinsically involved. Another great example of this is JK Rowling's Native appropriation for her new North American magic stuff, which she is very protective over so arguably racist about, yet fans often refuse to acknowledge it or defend it if brought up. 8y
BookishFeminist Also do you have the name of the new Lovecraft biography on you by chance? I would love to read it. 8y
Readergrrl Is The King In Yellow the inspiration behind some of the literary allusions in the first True Detective season with Matthew Mconaughey and Woody Harrelson? If it was, I am going to go find it to add to my TBR pile ASAP! 8y
brendanmleonard @Readergrrl yes! Lovecraft, Chambers, and the whole idea of cosmic horror was a big influence on TD S1 (also Barron, Ligotti, etc.) some people thought the season was gonna end with Matthew Mac fighting a monster 8y
brendanmleonard @BookishFeminist don't even get me started on effing Fantastic Beasts/Ilvermorny 😬 the bio is: 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard LOL. Not trying to, I don't want to get myself started on that either. But it's an apt comparison. And thanks! I'll have to grab it when it comes out. 👍🏼 8y
PatriciaU M.R. James is a favorite of mine, along with E.F. Benson and J. Sheridan LeFanu. Psychological horror at its best.... 8y
brendanmleonard @PatriciaU I have Benson and LeFanu volumes too! 8y
quirkyreader You have to read Alan Moore's latest work. Providence will blow you away. There are two more issues left in the series. So hopefully around December it will be our as a graphic novel. 8y
Readergrrl @brendanmleonard thanks for the response! I've been off Litsy for a few weeks but I'm back on now! I'm planning on researching the first True Detective again. I loved it THAT much! Would love to find more books that incorporate these allusions. 8y
