Scribbles in the Margins
Scribbles in the Margins: 50 Eternal Delights of Books | Daniel Gray
16 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
We lead increasingly time-poor lifestyles, bombarded 24/7 by petrifying news bulletins, internet trolls and endless noises. Where has the joy and relaxation gone from our daily lives? Scribbles in the Margins offers a glorious antidote to that relentless modern-day information churn. It is here to remind you that books and bookshops can still sing to your heart. Warm, heartfelt and witty, here are fifty short essays of prose poetry dedicated to the simple joy to be found in reading and the rituals around it. These are not wallowing nostalgia; they are things that remain pleasurable and right, that warm our hearts and connect us to books, to reading and to other readers: smells of books, old or new; losing an afternoon organising bookshelves; libraries; watching a child learn to read; reading in bed; impromptu bookmarks; visiting someone's home and inspecting the bookshelves; stains and other reminders of where and when you read a book. An attempt to fondly weigh up what makes a book so much more than paper and ink ? and reading so much more than a hobby, a way of passing time or a learning process ? these declarations of love demonstrate what books and reading mean to us as individuals, and the cherished part they play in our lives, from the vivid greens and purples of childhood books to the dusty comfort novels we turn to in times of adult flux. Scribbles in the Margins is a love-letter to books and bookshops, rejoicing in the many universal and sometimes odd little ways that reading and the rituals around reading make us happy.

An absolute pick!! Any book lover will totally understand all 50 of these beautifully written delights of books. The prose is lovely to read, and you will spend almost the entire time you spend reading this going “yep, I do that”, “oh, I know that person!” or “It‘s like he‘s seen into my soul”😂

????????????????????????????????????????

Lel2403 I do, but only in pencil ✏️ 6y
RainyDayReading Not usually. I usually only write in the book when it‘s a postal club book. 6y
Lovesbooks87 No I don't, I always donate my books when I am done with them. I did write in a book of mine for the first time when I joined a post markup book club! 6y

TrishB No 😱 6y
ElaineHowlin I always use index tabs and sometimes highlight and write notes. 6y
zzz Nope 6y
Andrea4 Hell yes! 6y
Naj I use sticky notes and sometimes underline in pencil. 6y
RavenLovelyReads All the time! 6y
GingerAntics All the time. Then again, in my field you pretty much have to. I usually colour code my highlights and then use similarly colored pens for notes; although, later that can sometimes seem like madness if the colour coding was specific to a paper instead of a topic like my highlights in my copy of Shakespeare‘s sonnets. (edited) 6y
tournevis In academic book, flags galore. In other books, noooooo! 6y
Heretherebedragons Ditto what @tournevis said. I will use post-it notes though so I can go back and pull out quotes for my journal if something resonates with me. 6y
TheSpineView No! Never! That is what sticky notes are for! 6y
BooksBecomeYou Yes! It adds life to your library! I also sign and date the last page when I finish a book. 6y
BooksBecomeYou I should say, it adds life to your *personal* library. I don't write in other people's books. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Nevaaaaaa... that's sacrilegious!!!!! 6y
BooknerdsLife Yesss!! I like to highlight the parts I love and occasionally with write down a little note for myself 😊 I think it adds character to the book & shows that it's well loved ..in a way. 😊💕 6y
AmandaEve Yes I always find those are the ones I‘ll reread again and again! 6y
MotionChickness Nooooo! I take pictures with my phone! 6y
readordierachel Nope. I'll use sticky notes. 6y
NeedsMoreBooks In academic books, yes. In other books, no. I usually put a sticky note. 6y
Literary_Siren Never!! 6y
MimiLovesToRead Sometimes, yes. If it belongs to you. Not a thing wrong with it. 6y
Jobe @BooknerdsLife exactly! 6y
Jobe @Naj Great idea 6y
Crystalblu Mostly it cookbooks. I like to note the changes I made that elevated the dish. 6y
Pam.Kokomo Yes to all but drawing! 6y
UCLAoso Yes! I flag and mark up my nonfiction reads, dense fiction and of course my favored reads🤓 @BooksBecomeYou, I love your idea of signing and dating when you finish a book! Borrowing this idea!! 6y
BooksBecomeYou @Crystalblu My mom came up with this idea. Sometimes she adds a tiny drawing to represent how the book made her feel. I look forward to seeing them when I borrow books from her. 6y
lil_sips Yes all the time. I love underlining or highlighting the lines that I love :) 6y
BooknerdsLife @Jobe 🤗 I use my daughter‘s crayons and sticky notes for highlights so it won‘t damage the books 6y

So I‘m quite excited to join this club! I read once that people in the Victorian Age would pick a book as a gift for a friend or lover, read it, and write notes throughout commenting on the parts that made them think of that person. What a personal and, literally, thoughtful gift!!

suvata I didn‘t know that. How cool is that? 6y

@Andrea4 @Jaberwocky @FantasyChick Looks like we're a group! Can't wait to get started with all of you! Do we want to choose books together or keep things secret? First of all - what kind of stuff do you like to read? #LMBPC

Jabberwocky Hi new friends I'm excited to get to know you all! I live sci fi fantasy, historical fiction and memoirs! I'm also a Queer lady and love queer fiction, but just want to double check that no one would be uncomfortable if I sent an lgbtqa book out? 7y
Jabberwocky Also I think secrets are fun? 7y
Andrea4 I'm good with either keeping it secret or group voting-maybe we could do an in between option where we help narrow down the choice but don't know the final one? I stay away from romances, westerns, and hardcore sci-fi books-tho if someone says "this western is amazing and will blow your mind!!!!" I'd give it a shot Lol. My trigger is sexual assault but only if it's an extended description. I read plenty of thriller/horror so I am used to it. 7y

Andrea4 @Jaberwocky I would LOVE a lgbtqa book!!! I'm up for both expanding my understanding and my author selections, so please do! On that note, I am trying to make a point of reading more works by...well.. people who aren't old, cis, straight, white guys 😂😂😂 7y
FantasyChick I don't have any issue keeping it a secret! I mostly read thrillers, horror and fantasy but I'm trying to branch out lol. I try to stay away from the sci-fi and religious books but I'll try just about anything once 😁. @Jaberwocky One of my most prized books was is a memoir sent to me by a lgbtqa author so no issues there!!!! Can't wait! 7y
FantasyChick @Andrea4 I like the idea of narrowing down a choice. I don't want to send something you guys have read so that might eliminate some options but still keep it secret 😉 7y
BookishTrish @jaberwocky I like sci fi fantasy and historical fiction too. Happy to read LGBTQA! 7y
BookishTrish @Jaberwocky @Andrea4 @FantasyChick How about if we each post four (ish) books we're thinking of and give the group a chance to pipe up if they've read them already or have other strong feelings, and then we keep the final choice secret? 7y
Andrea4 @BookishTrish I'm good with that :) 7y
BookishTrish @andrea4 @FantasyChick I LOVE horror and will happily take recommendations any time! 7y
FantasyChick @BookishTrish sounds good! I'll work on finding some suggestions 😊 7y
Jabberwocky @BookishTrish sounds good!! To the shelves! (To pick books) 7y
