I haven‘t read many essay collections, so I wasn‘t sure what to expect. Overall, the essays just didn‘t grab me. I did laugh out loud several times. A solid three stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve been reading a number of essay collections. Since most books offer readers a narrative arc, it‘s sometimes hard to know what to make of an essay collection. Although there were no laugh out loud moments for me in this book, I did appreciate the author‘s satirical reflections on some of the more serious portions of her life. I definitely liked some essays more than others, but I think that‘s pretty typical for the essay collection genre.

Crosley‘s second collection of essays makes for a quick and entertaining read! There are some funny moments but personal ones too - I was lucky enough to score a signed copy from the Garden District Bookshop the last time I was in New Orleans! It‘s been sitting on my bedroom bookshelf since November but it brightened my weekend!

Enjoyable, though I‘m not sure how all these stories went together, but worthwhile regardless. Love her delivery, though, and observations.

Another great book of essays by Crosley. My favorite one was about her being on the set of gossip girl.

I really enjoyed this book of personal essays on topics ranging from life in NYC to travel to medical situations. Crosley is funny and relatable and writes so well. I‘ll definitely be looking for her backlist.

Soubhiville The pony story in I Was Told There‘d Be Cake... I almost peed my pants in my car laughingstock hard at the audio. Fair warning 😊🤣 6y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Hmmmm, sounds like I need to look for that sooner than later! 6y

🐦 a nice collection of essays that influenced me to consider different and interesting topics...such as the “theft” (purchase) of a web domain by a stranger who then may hold it hostage until you pay them a sum of money to return it...🤨 kinda rude. The author is funny but not too over the top with it which I appreciate. I have been meaning to go back and read I Was Told There‘d Be Cake. Now that I‘ve enjoyed this one I may have to to do soon.🌟

Next up! About halfway through this collection of essays, and some I have connected with more than others, which is usually the case. She‘s funny but not over the top, which I appreciate. #readandlisten #audiobook

Really enjoyed this as an audiobook! (Finally got a good one! 🎧) Light, amusing, only sometimes meandering, this was the perfect guilty pleasure that was easily digestible for multitasking.

Clever and self-deprecating essays. I especially loved the one about her being petty and getting revenge on a bad neighbor.

I‘m not sure that these are essays - more like anecdotes from someone who makes stupid mistakes and then uses self-deprecating humor to get everyone to laugh about it. There are some insights here and her tone is relaxed and engaging, but over time the gag starts to wear thin.

8little_paws Just finished it and I completely agree. Wished there was more substance here. 6y

My long standing packing rule has been “when in doubt, take a cardigan.” I feel validated that Sloan Crosby feels the same way. Also, this book is delightful!

I‘m a big Sloane Crosley fan (loved I Was Told There‘d Be Cake). That being said, the first 1/3 of the book was disappointing because the essays felt like they ended prematurely or were collections of witty observations that didn‘t add up to a full narrative. HOWEVER, the rest of the book redeemed itself because that‘s where all the good essays are. So I say stick with it!

A smart, funny, sharp look at life in New York City, being a freelancer, traveling, making choices about reproduction, and more. 🎧 Audiobook read by author is great. Crosley is comfortable behind mic and her conversational tone works perfectly.

From last night: got to see Sloane Crosley in all her wisdom & hilarity. It was great. Her novel, The Clasp, has been on my shelf for quite some time, but I think I‘ll enormously enjoy her voice in her new book of essays. 😏👌🏻

Kaye Goes to show mow much I know. I always thought this was a male author. I‘ve only ever heard of one other Sloan. Sloan Wilson , the author who wrote A Summer Place back in 1958, which was made into a movie. 6y
EKonrad I love her! Loved “I Was Told There‘d Be Cake” and I‘ve had “The Clasp” on my shelf forever too! 😊 6y

Sloane Crosley‘s sarcasm and wit and stories are somewhat absurd, in the absolute best way. I flew through her newest collection of essays and it made me happy- great observations, the perfect amount of detail.

I always enjoy Crosley‘s essay collections. In her upcoming collection, she covers freezing her eggs, getting her domain name held for ransom, going to battle with a loud teenager, making a guest appearance on Gossip Girl, interviewing her porn star uncle, and going on writing retreats. Funny, interesting dinner party stories.

Lacythebookworm I‘m looking forward to this one! 6y
