The Sixteen Trees of the Somme
The Sixteen Trees of the Somme | Lars Mytting
24 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
By Norway's bestselling novelist and the author of NORWEGIAN WOOD, a family story of epic scale. Edvard grows up on a remote mountain farmstead in Norway with his taciturn grandfather, Sverre. The death of his parents, when he was three years old, has always been shrouded in mystery - he has never been told how or where it took place and has only a distant memory of his mother. But he knows that the fate of his grandfather's brother, Einar, is somehow bound up with this mystery. One day a coffin is delivered for his grandfather long before his death - a meticulous, beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Perhaps Einar is not dead after all. Edvard's desperate quest to unlock the family's tragic secrets takes him on a long journey - from Norway to the Shetlands, and to the battlefields of France - to the discovery of a very unusual inheritance. The Sixteen Trees of the Somme is about the love of wood and finding your own self, a beautifully intricate and moving tale that spans an entire century. Translated from the Norwegian by Paul Russell Garrett

First sentence: “For me my mother was a scent.” Just sounds like something I want to read right now.

This book has become one of my top favorite books. I constantly think about it and want to reread it. I wish I could go back and read it for the first time again. Since then I devour everything this author puts out.

I loved this rather unusual mystery of a young man who had led a sheltered life setting off to find out what had really happened to his parents, who died in France when he was a toddler.

There was a lot going on in this tale and it is the type of book you need to really concentrate on; just the distraction you need right now!

Oh, and squirrels live in trees so..... meet my Sylvanians! 🐿😁

Thanks for gifting me this book @Cathythoughts 😘

TheSpineView How cute! 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Every so often a book comes along that is a little different and this is one of those books. It‘s a family mystery, a search for identity and a love story. It‘s about war and the fallout of war, greed and grief and families. Loved it.

squirrelbrain I saw this in the library the other day and nearly chose it but.... so many books so little time! One day.... 4y
JillR @squirrelbrain same here, this one had been waiting patiently on my wish list for ages. It‘s well worth a read if you get chance 🌳 4y

Such a beautifully told and well translated novel! The descriptions of the farm in Norway that Edvard the main character comes from, along with those of both the Shetland Islands and the Somme are so evocative. It‘s a mystery and a coming of age - Edvard wants to find out what happened to his parents when they died, and he leaves the insular security of his grandfathers farm to do that. Well worth a read!!

The short summary is: After his grandfather's death, a young man looks to solve the mystery of his parents' deaths in a quest that takes him from a small farm in Norway to the storm-wracked Shetland islands to the battlefields of the Somme. It's that and so much more. Beautifully written and translated. Very possibly the best book I have read this entire year.

Bailedbailed

Bailed after the first three chapters. It started out so good and seemed like it was going to be a lush, literary novel; unfortunately, it soon shrank down to a mere mystery story, with all that genre‘s annoying conventions. No thank you.

LeahBergen And I know how you feel about mysteries. 😆 6y
Tamra 😑 Shoot - I really liked the premise & setting. 6y

Pickpick
