Victorian class lines are crossed when cook Kat Holloway is drawn into a murder that reaches all the way to the throne. Highly sought-after young cook Kat Holloway takes a position in a Mayfair mansion and soon finds herself immersed in the odd household of Lord Rankin. Kat is unbothered by the familys eccentricities as long as they stay away from her kitchen, but trouble finds its way below stairs when her young Irish assistant is murdered. Intent on discovering who killed the helpless kitchen maid, Kat turns to the ever-capable Daniel McAdam, who is certainly much more than the charming delivery man he pretends to be. Along with the assistance of Lord Rankins unconventional sister-in-law and a mathematical genius, Kat and Daniel discover that the household murder was the barest tip of a plot rife with danger and treasonone thats a threat to Queen Victoria herself.

Simple explanations are usually the wisest ones - a person can complicate a straightforward situation with unnecessary dramatics and end up in a complete mess.

1. My favorite indie bookstore is closed on Mondays, so I went there today and got myself the tagged book. Also some cat stickers and “purple library” washi tape.
2. Friends to lovers trope.

Finished this one earlier this week. It was recommended to me by Book Riot #myTBR

It was pretty good. I enjoyed getting a different perspective of solving crimes in the Victorian era. A cook works to solve the death of a maid which turns into a plot to save the queen.

There were a lot of references to Kat‘s past like I was missing a book. Though it‘s listed as a first in a new series. So that was a bit annoying.

Bookzombie I enjoy this series. There is a novella before this one that is referenced so maybe that‘s what was missing. I read/listened to it in Hoopla. 3y

Definitely met my daily goal for #20in4 @Andrew65

Really enjoyed Death Below Stairs, and just started Oona this morning. Nightbitch is weird and not my usual jam, but it's good, and loving Where the Wild Ladies Are!

Andrew65 Great 👏👏👏🙌 3y

Perhaps if I had been listening to the audio I would have made it through, but I‘m so completely bored reading it and want to move on to something else. I wouldn‘t have picked this one up if it hadn‘t been a book club pick so please don‘t let my opinion sway you if you like historical mysteries. Awyr

This Victorian murder mystery was between a pick and a so-so for me because it seemed a little slow. I did like the way the main character slowly revealed her personality, but I felt like I had incomplete background information. Overall, it was pleasant, but it doesn't compare to some of the excellent books I've read in this genre.

1st book complete for the #AnyWayYouReadathon 5hrs 15min

Kat Holloway is a cook in Victorian London with a new job when her kitchen assistant is suddenly brutally murdered. This cozy mystery by a romance author comes with a lot of the flaws I‘ve seen in other books like it, but it‘s still fun. My beefs: while well-researched, the characters seem to have endless time to leave their posts and go haring off on adventures; too much time devoted to a will-they-won‘t-they relationship. I‘ll read the next one.

Not yet finished the first but I already have the sequel lined up and ready to go.

I like Kat and Daniel. I‘m questioning the historical accuracy a bit here and there but, still, I‘m enjoying this mystery.

Haven't read the prequel novella that introduces the characters (will go back and do so), but if you like historical mysteries with strong romantic elements and no-nonsense competent heroines (and believe me I do), this is a fun series. Mrs. Kat Holloway gets a new position as a cook in a Mayfair household and in-between keeping the household well-fed investigates the death of a staff member, helped by handsome jack-of-all-trades, Daniel McMann

We are dog-sitting for one of my best friends while she & her husband are visiting his home country of Peru. This is Pisco, & our current animal count inside is two cats & two dogs in a tiny house 😂 I‘m loving this mystery right now! My local bookstore started a monthly subscription service (several, actually) and I signed up for the mystery one. Think upstairs-downstairs like Downton Abbey with murder and a feisty female cook lead. #dogsoflitsy

First in new mystery series set in Victorian England. I liked that the main character was a cook rather than a member of the upper class like the main characters in many other historical mysteries.

Expected publication on January 2, 2018.

robinb Ooooh, I so wanted to get my hands on this ARC! So glad to hear it‘s good! 6y
