It‘s International Freedom to Read Week so I‘m ( finally) reading The Wars which has been a banned book. I‘m saddened to see Tennessee is in the news for trying to pass bills to implement a board to watch what their public libraries do beginning a whole new chapter of censorship 😢

tournevis Interesting. I had never heard of The Wars either. Those school books are province dependant, aren't they. What did you read in school. Mine were all French-language except Macbeth. I did read some of these though, mostly excerpts, and I have the Vietnamese poem somewhere that I have yet to get to: Quran, Faust, Analects, 100 Years of Solitude, Anne Frank, War and Peace. 6y

brilliantglow I've never even heard of The Wars let alone read it in school. We had to read Lord of the Flies and The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, 12th Night, The Outsiders... I feel like I've forgotten a book or two 6y

brilliantglow @MyNightstandRunnethOver I think it would be a great discussion. I'm fairly sure that in Canada required reading varies by province but also teachers have a selection of books that they can choose from to teach in their classes. I'm sure in the US required reading varies some from state to state too. 6y

TheKidUpstairs @MyNightstandRunnethOver it would be interesting to hear from other countries. I agree with @brilliantglow and @tournevis that our reading varies quite a bit by province (esp. Quebec, I'm sure). It is also heavily populated by American and British novels. TKaM, Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye were on a lot of high school curriculums. Only two Canadian titles stick out in my memory: Margaret Laurence's The Diviners and Nino Ricci's

tournevis @TheKidUpstairs @MyNightstandRunnethOver @brilliantglow Absolutely! My Ontario students have only read US authors, by and large, and a number of Québec students I know have only read US authors in translation (which is anger inducing to me, btw, and rather scandalous, really). 6y

brilliantglow @tournevis yes. I am in Ontario and that's where I went to school. The only Canadian authors I remember reading while in school were authors I seemed out on my own for book reports or whatever other reading. Which is crazy we have so many great Canadian authors we should be reading more of them in school. Honestly Kiss of the Fur Queen should be required reading for one. 6y

JaclynW This article was great! I've wondered about the same question the article starts with. I own/have read only a few of those books listed and haven't even heard of most. To Kill a Mockingbird was, of course, required reading for me in school. I'm thinking of adding one or two of these to my reading list for next year. Thanks for sharing! 6y

brilliantglow @tournevis I agree! I hated every book that I was "forced" to read in school. Except Gatsby and Shakespeare. And I think that largely comes from being told I HAD to read a certain book a certain way. I hate that. I hate having my reading choices dictated. Book reports were much better given I could read what I wanted and at the pace I wanted and then I could write about what I thought was important. But having to dissect a book chapter by chapter 6y

tournevis @brilliantglow Just have an approved list and let the students choose from it. If it's big enough, the goals will be accomplished with minimal push back. I've done it. It shouldn't be that hard! 6y

TheKidUpstairs @tournevis @brilliantglow Yes yes yes! I totally agree with that method. You learn so much more when you're actually interested in what you're reading. And it allows for more freedom in discussions too. I was lucky to have a couple very effective high school English teachers; they made sure we learned what we needed to, but we had some say in what we read and we had very open, free discussions about the books. They would guide discussions 👇 6y

TheKidUpstairs @tournevis @brilliantglow when necessary but mostly let us discuss what interested us and let the conversations go where we took them. And they admitted often to learning from us as we did from them. It was a great example for me if the power and potential in literature. 6y

TheKidUpstairs @tournevis @brilliantglow and here in Canada we have such a rich, varied literary tradition. Kids in schools should have much more access to homegrown works. They should be championed, not reluctantly assigned to make up some Canadian quota. 6y

brilliantglow @TheKidUpstairs yes! Love this. That is exactly how it should be. I am disappointed with the amount of US authors over Canadian in our reading materials. Canadian authors should be championed above US ones. Especially where content/moral/etc is comparable. 6y

Kaylamburson I just stacked the Pakistan book. Sounds fascinating! To Kill a Mockingbird is definitely a good US pick. An amazing novel, too.

I was assigned this book as part of my lit class. I have loved that so much of my class has featured Canadian authors. The Wars is a beautiful account of one Canadian soldiers experience through WWI. It is unique in the way it is largely told from the perspective of a historian who is trying to piece together the main characters life. The story deals with love, death, violence and sexuality in a rough time in history. Definitely recommend.

One of the best books I have ever read. Best use of post modernism and symbolism, great use of words. And strong catharsis. The emotions of the book was painted all over the writing. Absolutely amazing, loved every sentence! It's a must read.

shawnmooney I am not a big fan but he had his moments - enjoyed him, no, loved him, more as a public figure than I did any of his fiction. But still haven't gotten to The Pianoman's Daughter which is supposed to be great, right? 7y

shawnmooney But once I sat next to him, his partner, and his agent at a restaurant in Toronto's gay village in the mid-90s and overheard lots of delicious gossip, especially when Tiff popped out to plug the parking meter!! :) 7y

Day 6 of #photoadaynov16 : #readinschool I personally believe the Canadian syllabus for English far more interesting. We read The Outsiders in little groups, and midway through me reading it I broke down crying and someone else had to continue (if you've read it, you know the scene). The Wars is about a man in WWI and is mildly horrifying, but really good.

had to read it for english class (gr 11) but really liked it!!! sad at times and pretty harsh. as i was reading i predicted that robert was gay, but you can read it and find out for yourself :) rate: 4.5/5
