Moonlight Becomes You
Moonlight Becomes You | Mary Higgins Clark
13 posts | 34 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
In her thirteenth full-length novel -- her most chillingly suspenseful yet -- Mary Higgins Clark, "America's Queen of Suspense," delivers a tale of brilliantly sustained terror. Set in Newport, Rhode Island, in a world of old money and proud names, Moonlight Becomes You has at its center Maggie Holloway, an independent young woman who has put personal tragedy behind her and become one of the fashion world's most successful photographers. Accompanying her date to a party in Manhattan -- a kind of family reunion for the Moore clan of Newport -- Maggie is reunited with a woman who had once been her stepmother and who remains one of her fondest childhood memories. Nuala Moore is equally thrilled to see Maggie, and the two quickly get beyond old pains and resume their friendship. Nuala, now widowed, invites Maggie to visit her in Newport, and when Maggie readily accepts, Nuala plans a dinner for a group of friends so they can meet her long-lost stepdaughter. But when Maggie arrives, she finds Nuala dead, the victim of an apparently random break-in and robbery. Maggie is heartbroken at the loss and further stunned when she learns that, only days before her death, Nuala had changed her will and left her charming Victorian house to her stepdaughter, the only proviso being that Maggie occasionally visit an old friend, Greta Shipley, who lives in Latham Manor, an elegant retirement home in Newport. It is when she accompanies Mrs. Shipley to the cemetery to visit Nuala's grave, as well as those of other friends Mrs. Shipley has recently lost, that Maggie discovers that something is wrong. Using her skills as a photographer to aid her in uncovering the secrets hidden on the gravesites, she soon realizes that Nuala's death may not have been a random killing at all but rather part of a diabolical plot conceived by a twisted and unfeeling mind. Suddenly it becomes all too apparent to Maggie that Nuala's killer must have been someone she trusted completely. Then, when Greta Shipley dies virtually without warning of supposedly natural causes, Maggie becomes convinced that there is a connection between these two and other recent deaths among the older women of Newport. What Maggie doesn't realize is that she has become a target for the killer as well and that each clue she uncovers brings her closer and closer to a shocking and unimaginable fate. With a sense of swiftly mounting danger, and with the skill and insight into human nature that have made all Mary Higgins Clark's books major bestsellers, Moonlight Becomes You is enthralling suspense.

A bit of mystery and romance in the charming town of Newport, Rhode Island. Coincidentally, it‘s set during early October. Only nine more states (plus DC & PR) to finish #52mysteries

If you have a hankering for a good old fashioned clean mystery, Mary Higgins Clark is a go-to author. She weaves a who done it tale with several guilty characters leaving a reveal at the end. Mysterious deaths in an upscale nursing home leads Maggie on a quest to unravel the plot. Her meddling gets her buried alive and those who love her most go on a mission to catch her would be killer.

Pickpick

Rather behind on Litsy life - things are very busy here!! This was my #bookspin book as well as my first read for #EasterExtravaganza! The first chapter is a fabulous hook - the MC wakes up buried in a coffin! Then the book jumps back two weeks to find out how she got there. Excellent pacing and likable characters made this a very readable story that I totally enjoyed.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 Thanks, I think I just found my Rhode Island book. Love a bit of Mary Higgins Clark. (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I really like how so many of her books are stand-alones. I enjoy a good series, but sometimes I just want to read a mystery without worrying about how it fits into some grand scheme!! And I was excited that this one was in Rhode Island... kind of a small state, so I don't read a lot of books set there! 4y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks I agree I enjoy her standalones, Harlan Coben and Linwood Barclay in the same sort of mystery / suspense genre. 4y

Another ambitious pile for this #weeklyforecast but hopefully the #EasterExtravaganza readathon will help me power through!!

Almost done with the tagged book for #bookspin; Fangirl is my #triplespin. The Red Address Book is for #LMPBC and Nation of Enemies is my next #BFC read (will it be the first I don't DNF??) A friend loaned me Before Green Gables which felt like it would tie in nicely with my #HeyCarrots reading. I also signed up for ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) recommendations from TBR (Tailored Book Recommendations) and A Natural History of Dragons was one of the picks - and already on my TBR as it happens!! An Episode of Sparrows is a random book from the stack, and The Hundred Names of Darkness is the sequel to The Wildings, which I read last month and really enjoyed. We'll see how far I get!!

Cinfhen You got LOTS going on!!!! Good luck this week 💚💚💚 4y
LinesUponAPage Looks like a great stack!! Man, I‘m having a struggle of a time wanting to read right now. I don‘t think it helps that the hubby has been home more (shorter work days) and keeps dragging me into his projects. Lol enjoy those great looking reads!! (edited) 4y

Andrew65 Wow! You‘ll be busy. Good luck with the Readathon. 😊👍 4y
Cupcake12 Fan Girl is a great read xx 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @Andrew65 - Thank you!!! ❤ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Lifeisasnap - low interest in reading seems to be a common theme right now, but hopefully balance will return!! The last few weeks I've mostly stuck with fluffier reads, so I will be interested to see if I stay focused on this stack or turn towards lighter fare!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Cupcake12 - Yes!!! This one is a reread for me, but it has been several years, so while I remember really enjoying the story and characters, the details are all a bit hazy. I'm excited to get back to it!! 4y

Sometimes my nonreader friends ask how I can possibly read so many books. Answer: I even read while buttering bagels for supper 😂

BookishMe WIN 😍😍 4y
TheAromaofBooks @BookishMe - folding laundry is my other big reading chore. Do I really need my eyes to fold jeans? Answer: No, my eyes can definitely be reading instead 😂 4y

#BookReport - Apparently the best way to make it through your stack for the week is to bail on a 1/3 of the books 😂 My #BFC project of reading my oldest Kindle books is establishing that I had no idea what I was doing when I started collecting Kindle books back in 2016 as so far they have all been TERRIBLE!! Still, technically progress!

The Last Equation was not exactly what I was expecting, but still a decent read. Anne & Wodehouse ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) were of course delightful. Still reading Little Women although I am a bit behind on my chapter a day - I'm catching up on that today before jumping into the tagged book, which is my #bookspin pick!

@Cinfhen

rockpools I dread to think what my oldest kindle books were 😂 Great on getting them off the list though! 4y
Suet624 A lot of my Kindle books we‘re free selections so I‘ll probably find myself in the same situation. 4y

TheAromaofBooks @RachelO @Suet624 @kspenmoll - a lot of mine were free also - I think I just got a little carried away with the thrill of always having hundreds of books at my fingertips and wasn't super selective about which hundreds they were! 😂 4y
Suet624 Super easy to do. 4y

#BookSpin check-in!!

I've been really enjoying everyone's reviews!! Just as a note, though - for some reason, I've noticed a few times that Litsy hasn't notified me of a tag. So if you've reviewed your book and I have not commented on your review, please tag me again as I don't want anyone to get left out!!

Haven't started any of my reads yet, but the tagged book is my #bookspin read and is next on my pile!!

Keep up the reading!! ❤

rabbitprincess I‘ve read my first and second picks and am currently reading the triple spin! 😊 4y
ChaoticMissAdventures I am so glad you have not started either! I am finishing Djinn Patrol and it is taking longer to get through then anticipated. Starting my #booksoin next! 4y
nukie19 I‘m working through mine now and so happy that I‘ll be getting it off my TBR list, since it‘s been there forever! 4y

TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - you're on fire!! I had both your reviews checked off, too! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ChaoticMissAdventures - HA I am always the worst at my own challenge so there is that!! Hopefully will read my book this weekend - I actually really want to read the double and triple books, too, but I may run out of April! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @nukie19 - yay!! It's always great to see those old titles work their way through the pipeline at long last! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I wanted to read a giveaway I won so I can review it before starting on my picks. I just started the bookspin book yesterday. Hopefully I'll finish it (or get darn close) this weekend. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick - Well, I moved my bookspin book from my shelf to the kitchen counter yesterday, so that's definitely progress, right?! 😂 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheAromaofBooks That is definitely progress and you should be applauded for it! 👏👏👏😁 4y

Part one of weekend #bookhaul is from the #littlefreelibrary where I also dropped off some books yesterday. I‘ve never heard of this book, so I picked it on author name recognition only. Yes, that‘s our very well worn Flintstones mouse pad under the book!

Clwojick I either have this, or have read it. Lol. I love her books, but I tend to get the stories and titles mixed up. 🙈 there‘s just so many of them. 6y

I post about her a lot but one more can't hurt! Mary Higgins Clark is definitely my #palatecleanser! Whenever I just need a breezy reset I pick up one of her awesome books! #feistyfeb

Texreader I think I have a book by her. I'll have to try it out. 7y
Jhullie I have a whole shelf of her books. I read them in chronological order a couple of years ago and it was so interesting watching the development of technology through the years...from searching for a pay phone in early books to hopping on the internet via mobile phone in recent times. 7y
