Squeaking in last minute with my #bookspin picks for June. @thearomaofbooks

(1/2) This book had a lot of potential, but just fell flat with me. It was somehow the opposite of a book you can‘t put down - more like the book you find yourself easily distracted from. The problem was there were so many complex elements to the world building but I never felt like I knew where it was going. #arc

nukie19 (2/knew I was supposed to be intrigued and spooked by aspects (such as the notes left when people disappeared) but there weren‘t any supporting elements to pull those details into the story in a meaningful way. I think the author had too many ideas and wasn‘t quite able to narrow them down into a cohesive plot line.

Thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

nukie19 Also, this was my first #triplespin #bookspin so that‘s exciting! @TheAromaofBooks 5y

Gotta jump over to my book club book to finish by Tuesday. Excited to read my copy from when I was a kid, especially now that I live near where this took place. Should be a fun follow-up.

Angsty mother-daughter relationship? Count me in! This book went in some unexpected but not unrealistic directions and was definitely a page Turner. Would make a great beach read. #bookspin #doublespin #signedcopy

This book was more academic than I expected, not as a criticism, but a note that I will probably keep this around as a reference tool. Its amazing that in the short few years since this was written, I feel so much has happened in the feminist sphere that aspects of this feel outdated. But in general, this is a great read to reframe feminism & think more critically when engaging with something or someone who claims a feminist message. #bookspin

Excited for the push I needed to start this from #bookspin for May! I got it from the library when it first came out and then again from my Feminist Book Club but it never seemed to make it to the top of the #tbr pile. Here we go...
@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I definitely have books like that! Good luck!! 5y
Caterina Loved this one! I knew very little about a lot of the pop culture stuff it covered, being young and out of the loop, but it changed the way I think about a lot of current “feminist“ pop culture/market stuff. 5y
nukie19 @Caterina I‘m enjoying it a lot, although it‘s more academic than I expected. Still so interesting! 5y

As I hoped, Adams comes through again with a palate cleansing cozy mystery. The Book Retreat series has been my favorite of hers and this one doesn‘t disappoint. I loved the children‘s book conference that takes place throughout and everything about the setting made me want to visit and spend a week relaxing there. Pick this up as a breath of fresh air.

Realized as I was about to head out on my run that I needed a new audiobook to listen to. So far, this is just what I needed - mindless and light entertainment. Hoping it stays as predictable as I like for a running book...

It took me a long time to get through the audiobook, which isn‘t the books fault. But, I think that made it feel a little disjointed to me. I went into it thinking it was more of a mystery but I found it to be more of a character development story about Ana as she grows during the journey of learning about her sister. Under different circumstances,I probably could have gone up to a Pick but this wasn‘t quite there for me.

What a surprising book! I love slow burning, character centric stories and this one didn‘t disappoint on those points. Definitely glad I was “forced” to get through this right now by the #bookspin choice this month! @TheAromaofBooks

Light-hearted read that will leave you wondering whether our increasing reliance on technology is helping or hurting us. For our protaganist, Andy, its definitely hurting him-and reading about his adventures trying to detox was both enjoyable & cringe-worthy. The book won't change your life (I don't think!) but will give you a few hours of enjoyment. Thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute and innocent love story. I very quickly liked Lottie & her attitude about saying no to all the things she didn‘t want in life. When she starts to have a stronger relationship with Seb, the story follows a pretty standard path but still kept me interested in their lives. This would be a great beach/vacation read to just smile and enjoy. Thanks to the publisher for providing an arc through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

This was the best kind of nonfiction book; reads like a great fiction story, complete with suspense & interesting characters but also taught me so much about cave diving. I'm in awe of her work, especially as she moved into conservation & I just love her attitude about diving & her role as a world premiere diver who happens to be a woman. She is clearly a rock star and I loved her story. I'll be recommending it to all my adventurous friends!

nukie19 Also, my first #bookspin and #doublespin month done! @TheAromaofBooks - thanks for the challenge to finally pick this one out of my TBR stack! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I love it when nonfiction is engaging instead of dry. Thanks for joining the challenge this month - almost time to post April's list!! 5y

This book is exactly what it claims to be-heartwarming tale of a curmudgeonly older woman who starts babysitting a sullen 10 year old boy after school and how they change each other‘s lives. The first half didn‘t really draw me in, as I was feeling a bit tired of characters like Elsie, but the story got a little more real and I began to appreciate it a lot more. In the end, I was happy with how the characters changed;pleasant but still believable.

Full review in comments below!

nukie19 (1/2) Wow - I really liked this book. Its complex and strange and magical and just...fun. It would be the perfect book for hiding away at home and reading in one long sitting, at the story references itself so many times. Try not to break up the reading or you will lose so much.
5y
nukie19 (2/2) I read a lot of reviews that said they liked The Night Circus more than this one, but I'm going to be contrary and say I thought this one was better. Books about books just add so much complexity and the metaphors upon metaphors would just wonderful. I'm definitely going to sit with this awhile and plan on picking it up another time in the future just to see what all I missed my first reading through. 5y
