First Test | Tamora Pierce
Tamora Pierce returns to the land of Tortall with a heroine who refuses to quit in this first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Protector of the Small series. Ten years after knighthood training was opened to both males and females, no girl has been brave enough to try. But knighthood is Keladry's one true desire, and so she steps forward to put herself to the test. Up against the traditional hazing of pages and a grueling schedule, Kel faces one roadblock that seems insurmountable: Lord Wyldon, the training master of pages and squires. He is absolutely against girls becoming knights. So while he is forced to train her, Wyldon puts her on a probationary trial period that no male page has ever had to endure. Further set apart from her fellow trainees, Kel's path to knighthood is now that much harder. But she is determined to try, and she's making friends in the most unlikely places. One thing is for sure, Kel is not a girl to underestimate. From the Hardcover edition.

4✨ I should have read this ages ago! High school me loved Tamora Pierce and read 2 different quartets. This one is exactly what I remember of her writing. Packed with great writing, well thought out characters, battle scenes, and a coming of age story. Kel just wants to be treated fairly and she expressed this A LOT through the book. That would be my only complaint on repetitiveness. #roll100 #HauntedShelves #TeamFlurken

Tamora Pierce has written popular fantasy novels for years. The First Test is about a girl who wants to get her knighthood after it had just become legal for women to try in over a century. This novel tracks her progress and journey throughout her first year of training to the palace training master, Wyldon of Cavall.

This book is about a young woman who is trying to become a knight. Knights are only men though and she would be the only girl to become a knight. The head of the knights is very against her choice of this but has to train her anyways. He is not good to her through this training. Along her journey of training she makes a lot of friends that help her through it. Great book!!

One of the books by Tamora Pierce that follows a young girl on her journey to knighthood. I find this book and it's plot very interesting. I love this book series for young readers as it breaks social norms and opens their mind to different states of imagination and proves they can do anything! Children who like to read chapter books and the fantasy genre will love it!

The four books in this series are soooo fun to read! Kel has the bravery and integrity to always do what‘s right, which is a great inspiration for me these days when I feel like I have to stand up a lot for what I believe in. Fun, distracting read. Like if Hogwarts was just for boys, but a girl attended. And instead of magic, it‘s learning to be a warrior.

One thing I want to accomplish this year is finishing up all of the Tamora Pierce books. I started reading them back in middle school, with the Immortals series, but never got around to reading everything. These are quick reads, I‘m already almost halfway through the first book in the Protector of the Small series.

Confession: I‘ve never read a Tamora Pierce book! I own at least ten of them. I know I‘ll like her books so here‘s hoping this can save me from the last few books I read and didn‘t enjoy.

Apparently when I get stressed out about packing and moving, I stay up late reading comfort books instead. I really appreciate the way Pierce fleshes out her universe of Tortall, and though this book seemed short, it works as a way of describing Yamani culture without having to be in Yamani--something I found frustrating about the Tricksters duology.

New covers! It definitely looks like they're trying to go more YA than middle grade with this packaging. I don't know---they're cool, but very "gritty tv" looking. A little generic, and not the most representative of the tone or content of the books.

First Test is the first in a quartet by Tamora Pierce that continues a fantastic series tapestry woven from an original fantasy universe created by, and for, kickass women. Kel doesn't have magic to get by as the first female attempting her knighthood in Tortall. What she DOES have is an iron will, several feathered friends and a tendency to land in trouble. Love LOVE this young reader/teen series (and author)!

I've been feeling sort of adrift reading-wise. Not really a slump but not motivated either. I think it's time to return to Tortall.

"...when I see anyone big pick on someone small, well, there's going to be a fight."

I was a bit hesitant to read another quartet about knight training (been there, done that with Alanna) but I'm blowing through (and loving) Kel's story.

emtobiasz Kel's is so good! And different from Alanna in a lot of ways. First Test is still one of my favorite books ❤️ 7y

Kel was my favorite Tamora Pierce character growing up because she didn't need the Gift to challenge oppression. She needed her sense of justice, willingness to work hard, and vast reserves of inner strength. Now is a good time for me to reread her quartet.

Hahahaha you want me to pick one #girlcrush?? Not happening, and even limiting it to five was REALLY hard! So: first up is Keladry of Mindelan from Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet. She's a leader who's goal is always to look out for the little guy and her adventures pretty much changed my life. Next: Kate Daniels, a mercenary who always saves the world even if the world doesn't really appreciate it. (cont in comments)

MeganB Third: NINA ZENIK who is a big bold lover of life who can LITERALLY rip the heart out of your chest 😍😍😍. 8y
MeganB Fourth: Akira, my platonic ideal of a contemporary Slytherin heroine who does not have time for your bullshit, sexist or otherwise. 8y
MeganB And last, but CERTAINLY not least, Lex!! She's the Queen of Sector Six long before she hooks up with Dallas, he king. She watches out for her girls no matter what, whether it's making sure they're having great sex to getting them out of dangerous situations or cheering them up on a bad day. 8y

I always love rereading an old favorite ☺

As a child Kel was always a character that I looked up to and strived to emulate; from her unwavering dedication to her studies to her relentless pursuit of bullies, Kel clearly proves thst she can do anything that the boys can do, and sometimes even better.

This is a favorite series for me, by one of my favorite authors. This story is about Kelandry who at 10 years old wants to become a knight, and to have the same chance as the boys. She is strong, and funny, and kickass, all the while maintaining who she is. It's a quick read the the 1st of 4 books
