Die, My Love
Die, My Love | Ariana Harwicz
In a forgotten patch of French countryside, a woman is battling her demons embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning for family life but at the same time wanting to burn the entire house down. Given surprising leeway by her family for her increasingly erratic behaviour, she nevertheless feels ever more stifled and repressed. Motherhood, womanhood, the banality of love, the terrors of desire, the inexplicable brutality of another person carrying your heart forever Die, My Love faces all this with a raw intensity. It s not a question of if a breaking point will be reached, but rather when and how violent a form will it take? This is a brutal, wild book it s impossible to come out from reading Ariana Harwicz unscathed. The language of Die, My Love cuts like a scalpel even as it attains a kind of cinematic splendour, evoking the likes of John Cassavetes, David Lynch, Lars von Trier and John Ford. In a text that explores the destabilising effects of passion and its absence, immersed in the psyche of a female protagonist always on the verge of madness, in the tradition of Sylvia Plath and Clarice Lispector, Harwicz moulds language, submitting it to her will in irreverent prose. Bruising and confrontational, yet anchored in an unapologetic beauty and lyricism, Die, My Love is a unique reading experience that quickly becomes addictive.

"Die, My Love crackles & burns with a savage, urgent beauty." Claire Louise-Bennett's blurb sums up the book for me. @vivastory mentioned that he saw this book referred to as Plath meets Lynch, which is accurate. Brutal & impressionistic, set in the French countryside, with the stark life & death urgency of a new mother falling to pieces & yearning for freedom. Wonderfully translated by Sarah Moses & Carolina Orloff: the language is a revelation.

batsy You feel like you're reading this book in a frenzy of anxiety or a feverish dissolution. The mundane realities of home life & the pressures of being a mother in the midst of the stifling sameness of the day-to-day, juxtaposed with the beauty & savagery of country life: sights, sounds, smells. The shifts in the POV of the narration require the reader's close attention, but you're rewarded for it with language that is poetic, intense, sublime. 1y

CBee @batsy it sounds incredible! And a bit exhausting 😅😂 1y
jlhammar Sounds good. I've been wanting to try another Charco Press title since reading and loving Elena Knows. 1y
vivastory Great review! Really looking forward to reading this one. 1y
Tamra Same publisher for Elena Knows? Must TBR! 😄 1y
batsy @BarbaraBB @thebackyardgnome Very different in style from most types of literary fiction! 1y
batsy @CBee Yes, it would be if it was longer 😁 Luckily it was well-structured and short; a novella. 1y
batsy @jlhammar @Tamra Yes! They seem to have some really unique titles out. I know I have few more Charco books on my TBR. 1y
batsy @vivastory I hope it'll be a pick for you, too! 1y

batsy @BarbaraBB When I went to shelve my copy upstairs, I came down to rummage in the other shelf and found the book there. I was like... Wait...?! So turns out I accidentally bought two copies 😂 I'll throw in the extra copy when I send Seventeen (hopefully by this week or next!) 1y
BarbaraBB Really??? Wow… you made my day! Thank you so much 😊 ❤️ 1y
batsy @BarbaraBB Yes! It's a pleasure to send it to someone who really wants to read it 🙂 1y
Centique Another legendary review! You‘ve brought back a strong sense of Plath to me now with that description. (edited) 1y
batsy @Centique Yes, there are Plathian undertones but she creates her own new style. A bit of Schweblin thrown in. 1y

This is the book I've gone with for this month's #TBRtarot @CBee

It's excellent so far, unlike anything I've read recently, but also bleak. I read a bit before bed and had a long, anxiety-inducing dream about wondering through a strange, intensely sunny city all alone, with not a single other person around, not even any animals, just buildings under the glare of the sun.

So, yeah. Looking forward to be totally wrecked by the end of this 👍🏾

CBee Oh wow. Sounds…..heavy 😥 1y
batsy @CBee Yes! It's a slim book but it packs a punch. 1y
vivastory This has been ony TBR. I'm really looking forward to reading it. I think I read somewhere a comparison of Lynch meets Plath. 1y
batsy @vivastory I think the Lynch meets Plath comparison is spot, but perhaps Harwicz is more savage, brutal (pretty fitting with the book set in the French countryside). 1y

📚 I'm between books at the moment. Between a brilliant discussion with #NYRBBookClub & going to the theater for the remastered Godfather, I haven't had time to read yet today.
📚Magda Szabós Katalin Street. A powerful & layered work of characters who are haunted by their histories.
📚The tagged book. Described as a cross between David Lynch, Plath & Cassavetes. Sounds incredible!

This is a dark book: the style and themes reminded me of The Bell Jar a little. Both take place deep in the heads of characters dealing with something between mental illness and existential world weariness. Harwicz's protagonist feels trapped in the lifestyle of a mother and partner, and her bouts of depression and anger felt like authentic expressions of her personality. At times it reminded me of a real person's diary rather than a novel.

batsy Nice review! I have this but have yet to read it; it sounds like my kind of (grim) thing, for sure 🙂 3y
Billypar @batsy Thanks! Yeah, even though this isn't for everyone, I think its audience knows who they are. 3y
Billypar @batsy Speaking of grim books on our shelves, I was considering picking up The Changeling sometime soon, maybe around Christmas or January. I know you tend to have a pretty intense buddy read schedule, but let me know if you're interested. 3y

One of the most intense books I've ever read, almost claustrophobic. Told from the perspective of a woman suffering with at minimum postpartum depression and possibly into full blown psychosis. Not much of a plot here, more of a stream of consciousness from the most unreliable narrator making it difficult to know what is really happening or what she is imagining.

4.5/5👊🏻. Postpartum depression often hits when you think that you are just fine. This was oozing with striking prose and deep emotion.

Maaaaan. So this was a bit confusing at times, always dismally poetic, and absolutely nailed the unreliable inner voice of postpartum depression and rage. A completely raw and visceral look at domesticity.

Here's the thing. I hate seeing the word 'visceral' tossed around so much in reviews. It's literally the only context I ever see it in and generally makes me roll my eyes or at least purse my lips in a very Lucille Bluth sort of way. And yet here we are. There's no better way to describe how I'm reacting to this story than *visceral*. My apologies to all the reviews I've scorned before. It's hitting me like nothing else I've read since motherhood.

I became interested in this title when I saw it on the Booker longlist, first I had heard of it, and just discovered that it's on #kindleunlimited. I'm already glad I found it, it's looking to be an amazingly dark tale new motherhood and domesticity. I'll post a ss of the first paragraph in another post.

Belated April roundup! Not as good a reading month for me as last month as I‘ve been very busy at work and some of these books were long old monsters 😞 best of this month was a tie between Educated and A Brief History of Seven Killings

The story that puts the depression on the forefront - a woman who is trapped between motherhood, the role of a wife and her own femininity, is built of short chapters - images that perfectly presented her fast, chaotic flow of thoughts. Excellent prose, interesting structure and unique presentation of a claustrophobic feeling when an individual is a prisoner of his own life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Suet624 Intriguing review. Stacked. 6y
batsy Very interesting review! When I wanted to buy it from Book Depository they had run out of stock :( Need to check again. 6y

Mehso-so

I have no idea how to rate this book. The writing and translation was beautiful, the word choice and imagery was so well done, but it was so dark and depressing with so little respite or joy that I just spent most of it wishing I wasn‘t reading it. That‘s probably partly my own shit getting in the way, I have mental health problems and hate imagining them ruining a relationship or having these effects. Just a very difficult read. #litworld2018gb

Happy Easter weekend everybody! I hope everyone who celebrates Easter is enjoying it and everyone who doesn‘t is enjoying the random bank holiday.

This book is dark and intense and not very Easter-y tbh, it reminds me a lot of Sylvia Plath. I‘m glad it‘s short because even tho it‘s well written I definitely couldn‘t do this for long

batsy @Simona I was also on the fence, but was persuaded by a review by Deborah Levy in the Guardian 🙂 6y
BarbaraBB Good to know that you made a selection I can follow :) I have heard good things about the Binet! 6y

"There are writers whose work suggests that human consciousness beyond their own can be accessed, and through that the categorical unknowableness of others‘ lived experience might be revealed." #freeyourmind

The Republic of Consciousness shortlist was announced on Feb 19th. It's a prize for small UK presses, that both fascinates & bugs me. The blurb above is from their mission statement.

And here's the shortlist from Culture Trip ?

rockpools (because at least they've put links in!):

Thank you @batsy & @Cinfhen for a fabulous #fiercefeb. You've kept me on my toes this month!

batsy I just heard about this, the titles sound intriguing! A bunch have been added to my TBR. Is there something in particular that bugs you about the prize? (And thank you so much for joining in, loved seeing your posts 👏🏽💜) 6y
rockpools @batsy I think I'd really like to read the shortlist for this one. It's not the prize so much as the marketing- their website is worse than mine (not a compliment!) and just has a list of the shortlist - no links, no blurbs, no link to the longlist... I found a TLS article of the longlist but not the shortlist... You have to work quite hard to find out what they're celebrating! 6y

batsy Yeah, I understand! The website has a very early-2000s blog feel about it 😐 I was also trying to find more information; was wondering if there even was a longlist! The books seem fascinating; I think people would love to read the shortlist ahead of the prize, but there's only about a month I think. 6y
Mitch I agree @RachelO it‘s not the best. The books look great though. I‘ve had WeThatAreYoung on my shelf for a while now - perhaps it‘s time ..... 6y
rockpools @Mitch I stacked that the other day - it does look great! As it's small presses, I think I want a full-on song and dance making for them. I'll just have to get on and read them instead 😉@batsy And definitely! (Though I have never yet managed to read in advance if Any prize Ever!) 6y
