That's Not What Happened
That's Not What Happened | Kody Keplinger
Six survived to tell the story, but who know the truth? The next hotly anticipated YA novel from bestselling US sensation Kody Keplinger, author of THE DUFF and RUN It's been three years since the Virgil County High School Massacre. Three years since my best friend, Sarah, was killed in a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone knows Sarah's story - that she died proclaiming her faith. But it's not true. I know because I was with her when she died. I didn't say anything then, and people got hurt because of it. Now Sarah's parents are publishing a book about her, so this might be my last chance to set the record straight . . . but I'm not the only survivor with a story to tell about what did - and didn't - happen that day. Except Sarah's martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don't take kindly to what I'm trying to do. And the more I learn, the less certain I am about what's right. I don't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up . . .

Sarah is Lee‘s best friend, but when the school shooting happened she died. There have been many stories that have been told about the shooting, but they are all fragments of the real story. In this book Lee is telling the real story about what actually happened in the shooting. So far this book is really good (even though I‘m only on pg 17)

MissYaremcio Great review C.C!! Make sure you include all elements of the assignment in your post! 2mo

That‘s not what happened is a go book if you like books what tell you different sides of the same story and and how it went for the different carters. A line from the is “I wake up every morning with death on my mind” I would give this book a 10/10

MissYaremcio Well done Anastasia! Keep up the good work! Remember to include all parts of the assignment in your post next time (you were missing the tone)! 3mo

2019 Book 35: I was not expecting this YA book to have the depth of character and psychological trauma that it had, but wow. The author seems to have an inside to what it‘s like living through a school shooting. The way she made each character have their own separate struggles was beautifully written. I honestly think this might be one of the best YA books I‘ve read in a while. I‘m really impressed with how dynamic each character was. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A bit of a slow start, but I ended up liking this one more than I thought I would. Lee survived a school shooting her freshman year of high school. Now a senior, she‘s trying to gather stories from the other survivors to set the record straight on what really happened. Lots of interesting commentary on the value of the truth, how stories are used to advance agendas, and what can happen when people try to control their own narratives.

First full day of summer break. Lounged around and did a little “Chapter 1 day fun day”- reading the first chapter of books from my TBR shelf. A few of the non-fiction ones I‘ve read a bit of before and was dipping back in.
Yes, both coffees were for me. Two different flavors at once. Such a wild kick off to summer.

Mehso-so

When Lee (Leanne) & her bff Sarah McHale are caught up in a school shooting, Sarah is killed & a rumour about what happened starts to circulate. Lee knows the rumour isn‘t true & 3 years later she wants to set the record straight but people don‘t want to listen.

This looked like an intriguing book but it was only so-so. I didn‘t connect with any of the main characters & it all felt a bit superficial. 3⭐️

I've never read a fictional story about a school shooting.
It felt real and you felt for the characters.
Just because it's a YA doesn't mean it can't be hard going.

A ya from the POV of a high school girl who survived a school shooting. It‘s a few years later and she is getting ready to graduate and wants to set the record straight about what she saw.

Interesting take on a school shooting, seeing the life of the survivors afterward. Secrets, some not what I expected and a little disappointing, but still a good book. Pretty diverse.

I like the way the shooter‘s name is blackened out. He didn‘t need recognition!

tpixie Yes! That is exactly what needs to be done only talk about the victims never the shooter 1y

I cannot speak highly enough about this book. I had never read this author before, and it was a great introduction to her. I love that she made this book completely and totally about the victims of the massacre, not the actual act. Very moving

This was a tough book about a school shooting and the stories that get twisted in the aftermath. It dealt with more issues than just bullying and violence, but also sexuality and faith and friendship. Definitely worthwhile because it gave so many perspectives and even though the subject matter was difficult, it was hard to put down. #booked2018 #setatschool

Two Arcs in today‘s mail. Title of “That‘s Not What Happened” sounds like another way of saying Lie, Lying, Liar which is so common in recent book titles. 📚📬📪

RebelReader I‘m more intrigued by the other Untagged book! 😃 1y
Victoriahoperose I am reading the Kody Kepplinger now and it is really good. Super hard to put down. I‘m going to regret it in the morning if I don‘t put it down soon lol! 1y

Road trip means reading time for me. So, I grabbed #ThatsNotWhatHappened to start on. I‘ve read books involving school shootings but never one that too place after the fact. I‘m looking forward to seeing how this will all play out. What is your #WeekendRead ?

School shooting stories are not easy to read, but there are a lot of them out there and many that are really good. The narrator in this book is fantastic, even though it‘s a tough read. (And interesting tidbit- Keplinger wrote The Duff which was made into a movie popular among my teen daughters and their friends).

In between my judging reading, I still need to read #septreleases2018🇦🇺 for #rso. One from one #tbrpile, then one from the other. So here are 4 I will be getting through. Starting with the #loveozya one, unpacking Harper Holt. There has been some quite sad moments so far.
