Tales from the Haunted Mansion Vol. 1: The Fearsome Foursome
Tales from the Haunted Mansion Vol. 1: The Fearsome Foursome | Amicus Arcane
35 posts | 14 read | 10 to read
Welcome, foolish mortals, to Disney Press' spookiest chapter book series yet: Tales from the Haunted Mansion! Based on the attractions from the Disney Parks, each new book tells the story of one of the Haunted Mansion's 999 ghosts. With eerie illustrations throughout and a beautiful three-piece cloth cover, the books are designed to look like they came straight from the library in the Haunted Mansion. Tales from the Haunted Mansion is a fun, spooky ride, just like the attraction from the Disney Parks. And if readers are familiar with the ride, they'll see elements of it throughout the entire story, from items straight of the Mansion (are those pictures stretching?) to lyrics from the narration that is heard in each Doom Buggy. In this bone-chilling book, you will hear the terrifying tales of the Fearsome Foursome--four kids who look to out-scare each other. But just wait until they hear my spooky stories. Who am I? I am Amicus Arcane, your librarian and host. Your Ghost Host. So read on... if you dare!

I really enjoyed this book. If you‘re a fan of the ride from the Disney parks you will pick up on lots of details from them inside the book. Can‘t wait to see what the other volumes have in store

My #HHS aesthetic is mostly spooky. Bright Full Moons, Dark Haunted Forrests, Eeriest Old Houses, Headless Horseman, Skulls, Jack O‘Lanterns, and Witches!

PS: this tagged book is NOT by favorite Halloween read. I love anything involving any of the above mentioned things.

Four separate stories of 4 friends who like everything horror and end up in The Hauned Mansion to face a terrible end. This series is geared toward middle grade.

RadicalReader @Rachbb3 the movie is equally fantastic starring the always entertaining Eddie Murphy 5y

BookwormOfTheDamned

To begin, the night is innocent & fun as they indulge in s'mores, stories, & girl talk. Then Kayla shares a peculiar item that she purchased called a "Witch Bone," which is really a "Wishbone" that a gypsy sold her. The way it works is, whoever breaks the bone will have their wish granted. As expected, Willa breaks the bone & her wish comes true. From here, the tale unfolds like a children's version of "Pet Sematary" meets "The Monkey's Paw."

Arcana I was just looking at this last night, and wondering if I should read it. 5y

BookwormOfTheDamned

Just read the story that reflected Willa's last few moments of life. "Witch Bone" opens up with the death of her hamster, Chubs. The hamster once belonged to her younger brother, Billy, but she took it away from him because he was neglecting it.

The night of Chubs's burial, Willa is feeling sad, so her parents allow her to have a campout in the back yard with her friends, Kayla, Cassidy, and Tanisha. *Continued*

As the book progresses in the wraparound, I see that the 4 kids in which these stories concern are fairly arrogant. Much like the old Amacus anthologies, these kids will get their comeuppance.

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

Despite these turmoils, Tim continues using the glove, which elevates his standing from being a benchwarmer to becoming the star player on his team.

Yet, little does Tim know that Lefty is a restless spirit that wants his glove back and he will kill for it. The final scene takes place in a gruesome baseball stadium that is reminiscent of the Burtonesque imagery used in "Beetlejuice." Loved it!

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

Instantly, supernatural horrors begin invading Tim's life. In the past, Lefty lost his six fingered hand in a crash, which resulted in him hanging himself. Due to his gruesome death, Tim begins seeing a corpse hanging from a noose outside his bedroom window. He becomes chased by a six fingered, severed hand. Last, he is attacked by the glove. On multiple occurrences, he places the glove on his hand and it refuses to come off. *continued*

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

He identifies the glove due to it baring the number 13, a snake logo, and it having 6 fingers, as Lefty had that additional anatomy. Determained to have the glove, he inquires its price and sees it's out of his range. No matter, he throws $5 at the salesman, grabs the glove, and walks away. When Willa offers to pay the salesman the remaining $45 that Tim owes, the salesman declines, explaining Tim has received what he bargained for. *continued*

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

Just finished the first story and that was a little more gruesome than what I considered. Still, the tale is suitable for the ages 12 and up bracket. While the story relays the moral of fame going to one's head and becoming obsessed with material objects, this segment focuses on Tim.

In Tim's story, he and Willa visit a flea market where he finds a baseball glove belonging to the iconic Lefty Lonegan. *Continued*

Tales from the Haunted Mansion: Volume I: The Fearsome Foursome | Disney Book Group, John Esposito, Amicus Arcane

The first story the librarian relays is a tale that reflects a glove called, "Lonegan's Glove." I love how this has a feel to the old school, Amacus horror movies like "Tales from the Crypt" and "The Vault of Horror."

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

One day, they receive a mysterious invite to a deserted mansion on the other end of town - the haunted mansion. Upon entering, they become trapped within its walls where they meet the mansion's librarian, Amicus, who claims he has always been here. Although this occurs in modern times, he recalls Lincoln complimenting him on his spats. Using his psychic power, he lures the children into listening to ghost stories that reflect their own lives.

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

The book opens with a tongue and cheek introduction from the ghost writer, Amicus Arcane. His verbiage a more YA friendly version of the crypt keeper. Then the first chapter begins where Tim meets Willa at lunch - they're middle schoolers. Seeing she is reading a book of Poe, he invites her to join his horror fan group, which consists of Steve & Noah. Dubbing themselves "The Fearsome Foursome," they entertain themselves by telling scary stories.

Hello! 👋 Today I am hoping to finish up 200 Women so I can solely focus on Lolita. I‘ve barely made any progress at all with Lolita.

This is a picture of my Haunted Mansion books. I am obsessed with all things Haunted Mansion. It‘s one of my favorite rides at Disneyland. I even have the soundtrack to the ride.

QOTD: What is your favorite ride at any Disney Park?

Rachbb3 Mine is Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion is my second favorite. 😊 6y

Aim-eeToothpaste I love Carousel of Progress (the 2nd edition) at Disney World. Or If You Had Wings... brought to you by Eastern Airlines. I'm totally old school 6y
Meeko93 Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, and The Haunted Mansion. 6y
WriterReaderTrainer My fav is the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. (LOL, it's not technically a ride, but that's my fav.) 6y

Jinjer Adorable! 6y
minkyb I did not know there was a soundtrack! 6y
tokorowilliamwallace Most over the bygone era of conceptual experiences, since taken down, including those at EPCOT. The Great Movie Ride and The Carousel of progress, in agreement with my best friend. It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion are up there, too, and I think I remember liking the Jungle Cruise as a kid. 2y
oddandbookish @tokorowilliamwallace I‘ve only been to Disneyland so I‘ve never been on some of those rides. But I do agree on your other picks! They‘re all such classics. I love It‘s a Small World even though some find it annoying. 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @oddandbookish It's more its themes of global community, solidarity, multiculturalism, and appreciating everyone's cultures. I used to be a big travel person, when I could. 2y

A few of my friends went to the Disneyland Candlelight Processional this past weekend and I didn't get to go but at a Christmas party tonight one of them was my Secret Santa and this was my gift. Awesome.

I told her if she brought back Chris Hemsworth that would have been acceptable too. 😁

WarpedSweetness I find Chris Hemsworth with a man bun wildly attractive. 6y
Rachbb3 @WarpedSweetness Lol. I was bummed that I wasn't able to go. They took pictures and video, but it's not the same. 6y
WarpedSweetness @Rachbb3 I would've been bummed too. Pics and videos can never do the live thing justice I think. Although the lure to touch Chris Hemsworth's hair if I see him might get me arrested. Lol 6y
BekahB Ohhh I have the first book - I didn‘t realize that a second one came out! 6y

This was a great middle grade book for a reluctant reader but personally I didn't enjoy the conversational style and bad Svengoolie puns thrown in the middle of sentences. I did love all the references to the Disney ride but the nods to Rolly Crump and X. Atencio were excellent. Both were integral in the creation of the ride. Tips of the hat to ride elements and dialog taken from the ride script also got me. The stories are well told, also!

Fun detail of the Haunted Mansion wallpaper in the book and a nod to Phantom Manor, the Disneyland Paris incarnation of the Haunted Mansion.

My 8-year-old self might have enjoyed these simplistic, slightly creepy stories. My 43-year-old self is disappointed. Not up to my standards for Disney. I'll go back to the new series of comic books.
