Forgot to post this on Saturday!
I started it as my way to celebrate Canada Day.

Reading about Anne‘s tragic life before she came to Green Gables made me love her all the more! She faces her trials with determination and spunk and an indomitable positive outlook. The author has done a great job of capturing her spirit and dialogue. I was a bit hesitant to read this book because I thought it would just be sad, but instead, I found it to be uplifting. ⬇️

This is a low pick for me. I enjoyed the way Wilson imagines Anne‘s life before Green Gables. Although early on, I think Anne was written too “old” for her age, I do think Wilson has a really good grasp of Anne as a character. The pacing was a bit off for me, though—the narrative felt rushed toward the end and there were a few scenes that felt like Wilson was trying too hard to foreshadow events in the main series.⤵️
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Before Green Gables Discussion (5 of 5)
How did the injustice depicted through the book affect you? Of course, the injustice that Anne experiences, but also the choices that were (or weren‘t) available to the women in the story: Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Hammond, Eliza, Miss Haggerty.
What are your thoughts on the way women‘s roles are represented and lived through these characters?

📚 What are your thoughts on the more unsympathetic (or complicated!) characters we meet: Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Hammond, Miss Carlyle and Edna at the orphanage?
📚 How do these more negative characters shape who Anne is?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Before Green Gables Discussion (3 of 5)
There are so many wonderful characters who care for Anne and offer some brightness in her difficult life: Eliza, Miss Henderson, Mrs. Archibald, the Egg Man, Miss Haggerty.
📚 How do these characters contribute to Anne‘s growth?
📚 How do they shape her spirit and personality?

📚 Did you find the book to be a believable depiction of Anne‘s early life?
📚 To you, does it plausibly explain how Anne became the girl Matthew Cuthbert meets at Bright River station?
📚 Why or why not?
Here we go with the first #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead discussion of the year! My tag list record-keeping has been spotty this time around, so hopefully I'm not missing anyone!
Before Green Gables Discussion (1 of 5)
📚 What did you like or dislike about the book?
📚 How did its plot and characterizations compare to the original series for you?
📚 Do you feel Budge Wilson captures LMM‘s writing voice? Anne as a character?
I finished this just in time for the #kindredspiritsbuddyread discussion. I liked it okay, but because it was a prequel, I felt like it suffered from having to reach a specific ending. The beginning and middle were interesting, but the closer we came to Green Gables, it felt more and more constrained.

I finally started reading this last night and was surprised at how far back it begins, with Walter and Bertha Shirley! How is everyone else‘s reading going so far?
I know it's used, but did they have to put the sticker RIGHT THERE?! At any rate, my copy finally arrived. 😊 #kindredspiritsbuddyread

As I'm making my own 2023 reading plans, I thought I'd better make a plan for the 2023 #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead! Here's a proposed schedule through the end of the year. I've alternated genres a bit to mix things up: retellings, biographies, other LMM-adjacent books.

I've alternated genres a bit to mix things up: retellings, biographies, other LMM-adjacent books. A couple of these are due to be published in 2023, and a handful aren't available at my library but I'm interested enough to buy them, so I hope others will be interested as well. 😊 ⬇
Hello Kindred Spirits! I planned to put together a calendar for the 2023 #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead, but the month has gotten away from me. (It doesn't help that I keep finding more Anne retellings that sound really good… or that I‘m indecisive!)
So—I‘m planning on Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson for January, and will come up with the rest of 2023 later 😆
Please comment below if you‘d like to be tagged for this book—all are welcome!

I have loved Anne of Green Gables since I first watched the Megan Follows mini-series when I was five. I also binge-watched Anne with an E on Netflix and loved every minute of it. So to say I was excited to read this book about Anne Shirley's early life is an understatement. Wilson did an amazing job of capturing Anne's spirit and giving readers insight into everything she experienced before finding a home with the Cuthberts.

I enjoyed reading the Anne of Green Gables Series so much I decided to keep going with this prequel. #HeyCarrots.
What should I read next? Do you have a favorite and Anne retelling or LM Montgomery book?
I love the Anne of green gables series and this sequel is just as good! If you love the Green gables series you should definitely read this
I adore the way Anne finds a sense of wonder about everything in the natural world around her. Her unbelievable thirst for knowledge and her hope and dreams for her future completely sustain her through the hard times in her life.
