Hunting Charles Manson
Hunting Charles Manson: The Quest for Justice in the Days of Helter Skelter | Lis Wiehl
8 posts | 9 read | 18 to read
"Hunting Charles Manson the best true crime book you will ever read....Lock your doors, keep the night lights on, and read this book." - Linda Fairstein, New York Times bestselling crime novelist In the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress--twenty six years old and eight months pregnant with her first child--as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a businessman, and other victims. The City of Angels was plunged into a nightmare of fear and dread. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, after months of dead-ends, false leads, and near-misses, Charles Manson and members of his "family" were arrested. The bewildering trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do. Drawing upon deep archival research and exclusive personal interviews--including unique access to Manson Family parole hearings--former federal prosecutor and Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl has written a propulsive, page-turning historical thriller of the crimes and manhunt that mesmerized the nation. And in the process, she reveals how the social and political context that gave rise to Manson is eerily similar to our own.

This is a good companion book to Helter Skelter. Much broader in scope with brief trial coverage, this kept me rapt.

Bklover I‘m going to have to look for this one!! Love this stuff! 4y
CrowCAH Manson is an interesting case to learn about. 4y

I never read Helter Skelter so this book had a lot of new information about Manson, his followers and their killings that I didn‘t know. I enjoyed the details regarding the various parole hearings and Manson‘s own children and grandchildren. I was very surprised to learn that Manson wasn‘t a Trump fan during the 2016 elections. I thought sociopaths would be drawn to each other but I guess not. 🤷‍♀️ #MFM #ssdgm

Mehso-so

I had listened to a podcast where the author talked about exploring new territory for this book. I had read Helter Skelter as a teen (I know, I know) but this book didn‘t seem to cover much new outside of the appeals process and Manson‘s death and the fight for his remains, which was sad somehow. Though a sad story all the way around for the victims and the family members some of whom remained under his sway until his death.

This is at least the 6th book I‘ve read about the Manson Family, so you‘d think there wouldn‘t be much that I wouldn‘t know at this point, but this had some new information that I had either forgotten or never heard.

I liked that it was broader and less detailed than Helter Skelter, and that the author was willing to explore other motives besides, or in addition to, inciting a race war. #netgalley

Samplergal Oh goody. Another one to read! 6y
emilyhaldi 😆👌🏻 6y
Cinfhen I‘m glad it was a pick !!! 6y
Wan.der.love There‘s a new Tarantino movie coming out centered around Manson murders, can‘t wait to see it - Once Upon A Time in Hollywood 6y

This is my current #netgalley read. It‘s interesting how many tidbits I didn‘t know, and I‘m enjoying this foray into the Manson world.

I was just reading about the death of Ronald Hughes, attorney to family member Leslie Van Houten, which mysteriously occurred right before closing arguments in the trial. Hughes was not taken with Manson‘s #angeleyes and insisted on defending his client regardless of what Manson wanted. #abbainaugust

Reviewsbylola The Trail Went Cold is a podcast I just discovered and episode 53 is about Ronald Hughes. It definitely gives you a lot to think about. 6y
Smangela Both the book and the podcast sound intriguing. Thanks for sharing! 6y
Reviewsbylola The podcast is pretty short so if you listen come back and let me know your thoughts! I‘m ready to discuss the theories with someone. 😂 @Smangela 6y

Mdargusch Sounds like a good road trip listen with @AnnieD 6y
Cinfhen You broke down and visited #NetGalley!!! I‘ve been staying away😜 6y
Cinfhen I agree, this is a fascinating topic~ the death & disappearance of Ronald Hughes 6y
Kristy_K I considered requesting this but I‘ve read (and loved) Helter Skelter and didn‘t know if this would be redundant. 6y
Reviewsbylola I was afraid of that too. I have read quite a few Manson books (albeit not very recently) and I am surprised at how not redundant this is. Bugliosi understandably focused a lot on the trial. This book almost skims over the trial. It goes more in depth into some other killings that I don‘t remember being greatly detailed in HS—Hinman and Shorty Shea. So overall I find that it compliments HS very well. @kristy_k 6y
Kristy_K @Reviewsbylola You just sold me on this! 6y
Meredith3 😹😹😹love those eyes, so charming 👀😹💀 6y
Reviewsbylola I hope you agree! I‘ve read at least one other review that said it was a regurgitation of HS but besides the obvious fact that it‘s about the same murders, I don‘t agree. In fact, the section I‘m on now is the author exploring other possible motives besides a race war. She is open to the idea that helter skelter was not the main/only motive, which Bugliosi wouldn‘t entertain. So it‘s interesting. @Kristy_K 6y
Reviewsbylola Ugh I‘ve requested like 20 books in the past month. 🙈 But I‘m slowly getting through them. @Cinfhen 6y
Kristy_K @Reviewsbylola I‘d be interested in seeing what other theories there are out there. Manson (and the murders) are all so bizarre I doubt it was just about one thing. 6y

"History can repeat itself. Many of the social conditions present in the late 1960s exist today, only more powerfully additive,...This dangerous set of factors could coalesce into a perfect storm of conditions that enable another ideologue/cult leader/domestic terrorist group to take advantage of vulnerable youths w/addled minds, lure them into a band of armed citizen soldiers, & instruct them to carry out a drug-enhanced copycat slaying spree..."

Crazeedi I remember that time, people were stunned and horrified, I was glued to daily news 6y

Yesterday our snorkeling trip was canceled due to unsafe conditions/rough seas so I took a break from reading & we drove over to Mama's Fish House, a Maui landmark since 1973, for a decadent lunch & cocktails. 🍹🍽 Matthew had a Scorpion which includes 4 kinds of rum. Good thing this Mama was driving! 😎 #Vacation2018 #Maui
