The Tenth Island | Diana Marcum
15 posts | 11 read | 19 to read
From a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer comes an exuberant memoir of personal loss and longing, and finding connection on the remote Azorean islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Reporter Diana Marcum is in crisis. A long-buried personal sadness is enfolding her--and her career is stalled--when she stumbles upon an unusual group of immigrants living in rural California. She follows them on their annual return to the remote Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean, where bulls run down village streets, volcanoes are active, and the people celebrate festas to ease their saudade, a longing so deep that the Portuguese word for it can't be fully translated. Years later, California is in a terrible drought, the wildfires seem to never end, and Diana finds herself still dreaming of those islands and the chuva--a rain so soft you don't notice when it begins or ends. With her troublesome Labrador retriever, Murphy, in tow, Diana returns to the islands of her dreams only to discover that there are still things she longs for--and one of them may be a most unexpected love.

The Tenth Island is a perfect memoir for summer. It‘s a lighthearted travel memoir about Marcum‘s time exploring the Azores — a strange island paradise where bulls run in the streets and volcanoes rise from the sea.

Just started this one over the weekend. It‘s set in the Azores Islands off the coast of Portugal, and so far so good.

My current library book stack:
📖 Zoli by Colum McCann
📖 The Tenth Island by Diana Marcum
📖 The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen
📖 Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe

I‘ve already listened to Say Nothing on audio, but sometimes I like to check out the print version of a book as well, to help me find my favorite parts again or see if there are any pictures included.

1. Snarky detective stories are my literary mac n cheese.
2. Party tomorrow afternoon!
3. One of my favorites so far.
4. I can put my hands flat on the floor while standing without bending my knees. Mostly because I have short legs.

CouronneDhiver Me too. I‘ve always blamed “monkey arms” but I like short legs much better 😂😂 5y
kamoorephoto I can still do that too!!!! 😹 Pretty pleased with myself that I‘m not too decrepit to not be able to do it...yet. 5y
batsy Yes to 1! 5y
TieDyeDude Have you read the tagged book? She's a pretty snarky detective. It's not a light read, though. 5y
Susanita @TieDyeDude I never heard of her, but it looks interesting. Thanks! 5y

New to me author 2.0 for #Booked2019 and written by a journalist for #ReadHarder as well as a #blameitonlitsy book.

The author is a bit quirky, and the story sometimes circles back on itself, but I thought it was charming and interesting. Now I want to visit the Azores!

Diana Marcums life changes when she discovers a group of immigrants from the Azorean Islands living in the Central Valley of California, fleeing a Portuguese dictator and a massive volcanic eruption, between 1950 and 1980.
Her energy and fascination can be felt throughout. She learns of a culture that makes her question her own.a land she never knew existed and a land she can not forget.
Captivating!

There is an island in the Atlantic, called Azorean Island, many immigrated to Central California between 1958-1980. Amazing so far!!

Andrew65 That‘s good to hear as I own a copy. 👍 6y

This book was definitely interesting although it made me realize how my educational experience was sub par in the geography department. I had never even heard of the Azores before, but they sound incredible; full of rich culture and wonderful people.
