Years ago, Shoya Ishida led his peers in tormenting a hearing-impaired classmate, Shoko Nishimiya. When she transfers schools, Shoya finds he has gone from bully to bullied, and is left completely alone. Now Shoya struggles to redeem himself in Shoko's eyes and to face the classmates who turned on him. He learns sign language to apologise to Shoko for his behaviour, and so begins a relationship that will change his and Shoko's lives forever.

This manga series is really good. It definitely puts bullying and disability under the lens... as well as exploring culpability - the children may be the perpetrators of the bullying, but when they‘ve got messaging as above coming from the adults, is it any surprise? Btw, it‘s a TEACHER speaking in the quotes above.

Peddler410 I‘m interested in ASL, therefore I am adding this to my To Read app. Would this be good for middle school? (edited) 6y
Eyelit @Peddler410 idk - it‘s shelved in the ya section of my library, but it could probably be read by most ages. I‘d say 10/11 and up? There are some mentions of suicide and the fact that the story revolves around HS that probably are the reason it‘s shelved in ya and not the j section... (edited) 6y
Peddler410 Thanks! I‘m going to look for it. 6y

It's now been a full year since I lost Murchie, my beloved reading buddy and the first dog who was properly mine.

He and I took almost 700 bookish photos together over the last couple years of his life. Some of them are pretty terrible--little dude DID NOT like to keep his head still--but some are super cute. I'm gonna share a few of my faves throughout the day today. #murchieplusbooks

OMG THIS WAS SUCH A POWERFUL BOOK & WTF KIND OF CLIFFHANGER ENDING WAS THAT??!!?? Okay, now that I've got that outta my system, such an INTENSE book as the climax of Shoya's personal growth begins to hit him like a steel-plated wall. Emotions are so high and the themes of what it is to be so fucking different come alive in a way I really didn't see coming. Holy shit y'all!! 🌸🌸🌸
