It‘s the 1920‘s and Dara has fallen in love with her best friend, Rhodie. Once they‘ve been found out Dara exiles herself to working in a men‘s prison in Sugar Land, TX, where she learns that sometimes not being able to accept yourself is a prison of its own. The rest of her life is breaking out of that prison. There was such an unapologetic frankness to this novel that I came to appreciate. I feel lighter in spirit having read this. A good read.

Had it not been for the TOB longlist I fear this book would have passed me by and that would have been a damn shame.

This absolutely wonderful debut is so full of heart and pluck and spunk and humor and sadness and LIFE.

It won‘t appeal to everyone - there is a healthy heaping of racism, homophobia, and misogyny and TW: sexual assault and body shaming.

But I adored it. 4.5⭐️ Available on Hoopla.
