In 1955, eighteen-year-old Janet Jones keeps the love she shares with her best friend Marie a secret. Its not easy being gay in Washington, DC, in the age of McCarthyism, but when she discovers a series of books about women falling in love with other women, it awakens something in Janet. As she juggles a romance she must keep hidden and a newfound ambition to write and publish her own story, she risks exposing herselfand Marieto a danger all too real. Sixty-two years later, Abby Zimet cant stop thinking about her senior project and its subjectclassic 1950s lesbian pulp fiction. Between the pages of her favorite book, the stresses of Abbys own life are lost to the fictional hopes, desires and tragedies of the characters shes reading about. She feels especially connected to one author, a woman who wrote under the pseudonym Marian Love, and becomes determined to track her down and discover her true identity. In this novel told in dual narratives, New York Times bestselling author Robin Talley weaves together the lives of two young women connected across generations through the power of words. A stunning story of bravery, love, how far weve come and how much farther we have to go.

This is probably one of the best YA/Teen novels I‘ve read in a long time. The story is told in two timelines, which allowed for the story of 1950s pulp to be put into context for a modern teen audience. However, I found myself losing interest in the 2017 characters, often wanting to get back to the 1955 timeline. ⬇️

psalva It comes together in the end though, and I think I would have related more to it if I was in the target demographic, so I can‘t fault it. Also, I learned something new about the “In God We Trust” Bill, so it gets bonus points. I really want to read some more pulp lesbian authors now. 1y

Wow what a lovely, interesting, history packed book! Likable characters, good development, solid obsession material 🖤 the sheer amount of information this book casually dropped was amazing, made me wildly curious to research a bunch of stuff! Not to mention it added a few titles to my tbr list, which is a definite plus!

The lesbian pulp fiction genre is an important element at the centre of this engaging #audiobook with alternating storylines. Both timelines follow lesbian teens who live in Washington DC: Janet in 1955 and Abby in 2017. Believable characters: always a plus. Love the way the contemporary group of friends are all shades of queer and involved in civil activism. #LGBTQ

About 100 pages in and I really like this book. Finally sitting down to relax. It‘s been a rough week for our dog. Trying to figure out how to manage his seizures. A queer book and episodes of Friends should help.

Tonton Looking forward to your review!Best of luck to your doggo. Our Rin had seizures from a brain tumor、too frail for surgery; medication helped for close to a year. Then meds stopped working. Sweetness left us August 1. Hoping all will be well with yours. 💝🐶 5y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @Tonton I‘m so sorry to hear about Rin! We‘re doing an MRI in a few days. Hoping it‘s nothing major. 5y

Finding a story that feels like yours can be difficult. I feel like finding the right book for you can be more impactful & important than I can actually express. I liked how Talley emphasized that, writing about how words bring people together. I didn't love the characters (especially not Abby), but I found their journeys interesting & Abby's particularly compelling. Her struggles w/her family may stick with me even longer than the other themes.

jmtrivera I admit that I didn't love it, but I'm rounding my So-So up to a Like because I appreciate the themes so much. 5y

Rainy weekend means I‘m getting lots of reading in! Finished Baby Teeth (so creepy) and this is next!

Update - So sad to DNF this one! I was really looking forward to it. I got over half way and realized that, though the characters are diverse, no one has a personality. I didn‘t really know any of them. Or care enough to know what happens to them. That and all the repetitive paragraphs (someone needed a better editor) have me saying peace out.

So I‘m back on Litsy more because of the website (work bans phones, but they haven‘t banned the Litsy site yet!), and now it‘s back to “Ooo that book looks good! Wait, I have a Barnes and Noble coupon!” You are all bad influences and I love you all for it.

Drove up to West Va to visit my grandma. I think I got my reading bug from her. Still reading Pulp and I asked her if she read pulp novels in the 50s... she said she read EVERYTHING.

So far, the most exciting new-to-me book today is Pulp by Robin Talley, which explores queer pulp novels through history. Can‘t wait to read this.

“Pulp” is a very smart book. As concept art, I loved it. Abby Zimet, Talley‘s protagonist & a high school senior working on her final creative writing project, talks a lot about “subverting tropes.” Talley does this in her own YA novel beautifully; it‘s (partly) about teens falling out of love, standing in direct opposition to the many, many love stories found in the genre.

Stylistically, though, I felt differently.
*cont‘d below 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: I didn‘t love Talley‘s writing. I haven‘t read much (ok, any) 50‘s lesbian pulp, but I thought that her portrayal of the genre felt very anachronistic, in terms of voice. The writing in the main story didn‘t have a smooth flow, either. Honestly, it kind-of reminded me of how my own writing sounds when I try to write. (I have a deep fear that I‘ll never write well creatively, & that academic writing is the only area in which I‘ll ever excel.) (edited) 6y
monalyisha 2/3: Her characters were also a lot to handle, especially Abby. It‘s hard to read about a main character who‘s stubbornly in-denial for nearly 400 pages. That‘s a long time to be frustrated & longing for an epiphany. There isn‘t a whole lot of engagement between Abby & other characters, either. Maybe if she‘d shared more of herself, even if it was only in the form of *more* imaginary letters to Marian Love, she would have been more accessible. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 3/3: I liked the historical fiction part of the narrative better than the modern-day; learning about events in LGBTQIA history, such as The Lavender Scare, was fascinating. It only drove home my suspicion that I‘d enjoy reading non-fiction work by Talley more than I did her novel. 6y
monalyisha *NOTE: It‘s almost alarming how well the cover art matches the walls in the Teachers‘ Lounge at the school where I work, isn‘t it? Such a gorgeous hue. 😅🤢 (I do like the cover, though.) 6y
monalyisha It‘s worth mentioning that my favorite thing about the book was the title of Abby‘s creative work-in-progress, which she meant to upend the traditional lesbiana pulp fiction form: “Totally Normal Women in the Daytime”. 😂 6y

I‘m kind-of not into this book. But will I stop reading? Of course not. I haven‘t unlocked that level of bibliophile achievement yet. 🙈

kgriffith Oh I‘m gonna take that as a personal challenge to encourage you to DNF something sometime in 2019 ;) 6y

This is something I genuinely strive to remember when my husband & I get into it. It‘s *so* important.

I love being right. Like, love it. 😅😆 And I‘m good at winning arguments. Being wordy gives you that edge. 😉🔪 BUT... I love him more. He‘s a sensitive soul, so I can immediately tell when I need to back-off. And I do it (sometimes not immediately...but *eventually*). Cause that‘s love. Preserve & protect. 💕

BookFreakOut So true, I get a little mental red flag when I know I'm about to say something unnecessarily sharp that (shocker) never makes things better. Sometimes I heed the warning...but not always. Work in progress. ♥️ 6y

This #24in48 readathon is amazing and I have finished another book! Whoa! Pulp is a very sweet novel, and the two storylines together worked very well. I am a sucker for these kinds of storylines where history comes to life in meaningful ways and I love that this book exists for queer teens as a reminder that being out in the 50s was a very different process, and terrifying. #amreading #queerlit

Another week, another audio book. I am becoming a bigger fan of audios with each one I listen to!

Erinreadsthebooks Same here. Years ago I tried to listen to them while I ran, but it didn't work and I thought I was anti-audiobook. However, I've recently discovered that I'm good with listening in the car and really loving it! 6y

For the most part, I loved this book! 4.5/5

I loved Janet as a character and I preferred her chapters overall. I liked Abby and related her a lot at the beginning but closer to the end she was starting to act a little selfishly. Rest of my review in the comments

mskayla07 the ending about caring versus love I didn‘t agree with; I think love can come in so many different forms that you don‘t have to be in love to make life matter that Abby writes but different forms of love can make life matter and so I didn‘t like the ending. 6y
mskayla07 For some reason, Abby felt a little immature and too young but then I remembered I‘m 7 years older than her so of course she‘d seem young. Some of her actions felt a little selfish and I didn‘t care for the romantic relationship she had with Lihn. But I loved Janet and Marie even though the end revelation broke me. 6y
mskayla07 Overall this story is heartbreaking, emotional, amazing and just absolutely wonderful. I loved the mystery and historical aspects and the writing was perfect. The diversity of the characters felt so real and easy and was definitely appreciated! Definitely one of my favorite reads of 2018! 🤗 6y
