Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault
Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault: Essays from the Grown-up Years | Cathy Guisewite
From the iconic creator of the "Cathy" comic strip comes a collection of funny, warm, and wise essays in the style of Nora Ephron and Erma Bombeck, centered around the particular challenge of caring for aging parents and growing children, all while trying not to lose oneself in the process. As the creator of the "Cathy" comic strip, Cathy Guisewite found her way into the hearts of readers over 40 years ago, and has been there ever since. Her deeply funny and relatable look at the life of a frazzled career woman became a cultural touchstone for women everywhere, and now, in her debut essay collection, Guisewite returns with her signature self-deprecating wit and warmth, this time taking a look at her own life. The autobiographical essays that make up Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault offer a disarming, hilarious, and wise look at the lives of "the sandwich generation," which Guisewite calls "the panini generation." In this collection, Guisewite turns her uniquely wry and funny gaze to her own day-to-day life, with topics ranging from the mundane--teaching her parents to use TiVo, organizing four decades of photos, attempting to meditate--to the more profound--her struggle to find a purpose post-retirement, helping her parents downsize their lives, and her personal definitions of feminism. Humorous, warm, and poignant, Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault is ideal reading for mothers, daughters, and everyone who is caught somewhere in between, and on the threshold of "What Happens Next."

If you lived by the wisdom of Cathy‘s comic strip & you happen to have 90-year-old parents like the author, this book is a hoot! The stories about moms who save every plastic container, use newspaper bags for storage, ignore expiration dates on food and shun any digital upgrades, made me laugh out loud...and really appreciate my own Mom all the more.

I am not sure about this one. I was expecting more humor, less sermonizing, and more epiphanies than what existed in this collection of essays by Cathy Guisewite, the creator of Cathy comics, which I enjoyed ages ago. I agree on most of the demise sections and relationships with children and aging parents. This might be for an older audience or something just felt off.

UwannaPublishme I‘m probably one of those older people that may get this book. 😆 I really do want to read it. I loved her comic strip for ages. 4y
NeedsMoreBooks @UwannaPublishme I liked her comics too but she seemed whiny in this 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope you like it 😄 4y

Cathy is in a very different phase of life than I and I had a hard time relating. Her sense of humor also just wasn‘t clicking for me. A great book for my mom, but less so for me. #netgalley

I am in a reading funk; tried both of these books and just can't get into them. l think they'd be good books to read. I might have to try again someday, but just not right now.

I‘m giving this a pick because I do think it‘s good, but it honestly wasn‘t for me right now. I loved the comic strip and thought I would really relate to this, but instead I ended up seeing more of my mother. I love mom, but I wasn‘t looking for her version of neurotic privilege at the moment. I have a feeling she‘ll love it, though.

Growing up I was huge fan of the Cathy comic strip.
Creator Cathy Guisewite just released a book of essays, it is insightful, relatable and funny.
It first chapter I laughed out loud 5 times.
Highly recommend
