⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Welp, I didn‘t intend to read this cover to cover in one sitting, but that‘s what happened! It‘s safe to say that Helen Hoang is one of my favorite authors and every book she writes is somehow better than the last. She faced many challenges/setbacks while writing this book, and elements of the story reflect her own life experiences. #ownvoices This was a perfect romance novel and one of the best I‘ve ever read (and I‘ve read a lot😉).

This one wasn‘t for me. The relationship wasn‘t believable and the characters ate an awkwardly excessive amount of pizza.

While this was an easy and fast-paced read, it was just ok for me. The story itself was interesting and had some plot twists at the end. The writing could have been better, though. The lack of steamy scenes was a bit disappointing too, given the sexual tension throughout the 800+ page book. Overall, I think this one is a bit overhyped. #unpopularopinion

I‘m not really sure how I feel about this one. The entire book was raw, lonely, uncomfortable, and depressing. Most of the time, I was confused about all the characters‘ actions. However, there were also moments of clarity, wittiness, and brilliance. The main character had the most interesting (and often disturbing) thoughts. The book incorporated themes such as racism, sexism, the power of loneliness, and the constant yearning to belong.

jewright I have this sitting on my shelf. 3y
literaryloquacity I had a similar reaction - I couldn't relate to the characters or their choices at all and felt confused by most of the story. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book gave me so much joy. It‘s a story about the everyday challenges and triumphs of living with a debilitating chronic illness, it‘s a body positive romance, it‘s about an inter-racial relationship, it‘s about a relationship between an artist and a methodical computer nerd. This is a story about realistic, imperfect people who fall in love. It was well-executed and quite delightful. I can‘t wait to read the rest of the series! 💙💚

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I find myself conflicted over this book. There has been SO MUCH hype over it, so maybe I think I was expecting...more? On the one hand, the general plot and nature writing were intriguing and vivid. On the other, I felt detached from the characters. The dialogue felt contrived on occasion and the characters lacked development. Overall, I did enjoy the story; however, due to my expectations, I found it underwhelming. #unpopularopinion

AmyG Agree. I thought it would be just...better. Not a bad book. Just, for me, it didn‘t live up to the hype. 3y

It is not often that I read a book cover-to-cover in one sitting, then think to myself, “Wow, I want to read that again.” This bookwas spectacular. It‘s the story of a young Indian woman learning how to balance familial duties with professional duties. It‘s a story of 1950‘s India, newly influenced by the Western world. From the very beginning, I was hooked on the smooth writing and vivid descriptions of characters, places, and senses. #coverlove

⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one. It was just okay. I appreciated the strong female main character and her passion and drive to fight for women‘s rights. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After all the hype, I was not disappointed. For the most part, this was a satisfying story for my tastes. It had elements of romance, fantasy, and adventure, and was a bit on the dark side. It was also beautifully written and highly quotable. The beginning and end were page-turners, but the middle did drag a bit at times. Overall though, I enjoyed it and am glad I chose it as my #BOTM.

Saw this one at Goodwill and decided to give it a re-read. It‘s both heartwarming and utterly heartbreaking. To me, the ending still seems a bit contrived. But nevertheless, this story pulls at the ole heartstrings throughout. The author also did a lot of research. I grew up on a horse farm and I‘ve noticed that many horse stories are so unrealistic. That‘s not the case with this story. The details are accurate enough to be plausible.

Nute Nice review! I‘ve never read this book, but your statement about the accuracy of the details in this story about horses has me intrigued. Stacking! 3y

Could someone please describe to me how #bookspinbingo works?? I want to play but don‘t know how! Thanks in advance!

TrishB Tagged the coordinator @TheAromaofBooks 4y
TheAromaofBooks Thanks for the tag @TrishB !! @rethier1 - My original challenge is regular #BookSpin. To participate, you make a list of 20 books you've been meaning to read. On the 2nd of every month I draw 2 random numbers & everyone tries to read those numbers from their lists. #BookSpinBingo piggybacks off of that - I draw out ALL the numbers (plus 5 Free spaces) & arrange them randomly in a bingo board. Everyone reads the books from their lists that ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) match those numbers & try to score a bingo. So everyone's bingo cards look different because everyone has different books on their lists, but the numbers are the same, if that makes sense. I describe the challenge in more detail here - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 I just drew August's numbers this morning, but you can still join if you want - just make your list of 20 books, then check out my page to see the numbers & ⬇ 4y

Well, this was a page-turner! A quick, easy read that held my attention bc of the smart writing & exciting plot. However, as an independent young professional woman, I struggled with this book a bit. Women were portrayed as unintelligent, hysterical housewives who were not good for anything other than raising the kids. Perhaps this is an accurate depiction of how southern women were treated in the south in the 90s 😡 Made some parts hard to read.

LittleMummyMe I love this book...the portrayal of the winen was deliberate, to show how wrong it is to think of women like that or treat them like that. 💜 I love Patricia. 4y

This has been on my TBR for quite a while; admittedly, recent events bumped this up the list. The last couple of months, I‘ve been amazed at my own lack of awareness and perspective on the topics of #systemicracism & #policebrutality. Stories like this one serve a very important purpose to #educate people and highlight the corruption. While this story did not have the ultimate desired outcome, I have faith that a real change will come. It has to.

PurpleTulipGirl As sad as the resolution was, it felt more realistic than what I would have preferred. Which makes me sad. 4y

Wow, this is a truly exceptional book. An essential piece of non-fiction that was impeccably researched, written without bias, and written with sensitivity. There are many stories within this book, all connected to each other. All shedding a bright light on the shortcomings and progress (or lack-thereof, in some cases) in clinical research, health equity, disparities in health care, bioethics, and evolving practices of care. Thank you, HeLa 🧡

Ericalambbrown When I was in grad school in 2006, I had a cellular biology professor that was adamant that we knew where HeLa cells came from and that we understood all that Ms Lacks had contributed to the field, even without her consent. I was so glad when this book came out. We owe her so very much! 4y

I am aware of the controversy around this book, but I don‘t understand it. What author writes stories solely about their own experiences and their own perspectives? That would mean whole genres wouldn‘t even exist (fantasy, sci-fi, etc.). This was a tough story to read, but it was extremely gripping and powerful. It was well-researched and provided an important perspective on one of the most divisive issues the US faces today. #botm #controversial

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was hoping I‘d like this book a lot more than I did. I enjoyed the basic plot and some of the historical references. However, it was almost 600 pages and not much actually happened. I was also not a fan of the “strong female lead” character, who really just played the damsel-in-distress most of the time with a controlling male lead character. This #BOTM gem was a fantastic way to kick off 2020! This story pulled every emotion out of me. I rooted so hard for Zelda, a young adult born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, as she navigated typical (and some not-so-typical) trials of early adulthood. I think we could all learn from her perspective of the world. My heart sobbed for her older brother, who took care of her, despite his own life‘s battles and poor choices. Who ultimately saves who?
