The Porpoise | Mark Haddon

From the acclaimed author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, a stunningly ambitious, fantastical novel about the theft of female agency by rapacious men and the ways in which archetypal stories can warp history and the present Mark Haddon's breathtaking novel begins with a harrowing plane crash: Maja, the pregnant wife of the unimaginably wealthy Philippe, is killed, but their daughter Angelique survives. Philippe's obsession with the girl's safety morphs into something sinister and grotesque as she grows into a beautiful teen. A young man named Darius, visiting Philippe with a business proposition, encounters Angelique and intuits their secret -- he decides to rescue her, but the attempt goes awry and he flees England by sea. This contemporary story mirrors the ancient legend of Antiochus, whose love for the daughter of his dead wife was discovered by the adventurer Appolinus of Tyre. The tale appeared in many forms through the ages; Shakespeare transformed Appolinus into the swashbuckling Pericles in his play. In The Porpoise, as Angelique grapples with the wreck of her life, trapped on her father's estate, Darius morphs into Pericles, voyaging through a mythic world. In a bravura feat of storytelling, Haddon recounts his many exploits in thrilling fashion, mining the meaning of the old legends while creating parallels with the monstrous modern world Angelique inhabits. The language is rich and gorgeous; the conjured worlds are perfectly imagined; the plot moves forward at a ferocious pace. But as much as Haddon plays with myth and meaning, his themes speak deeply to the current moment. As profound as it is entertaining, The Porpoise is a major literary achievement by an author whose myriad talents are on full, vivid display.

Jumps around in time telling a variation of the same tale, quite unique and beautiful.

Well, this one is a surprise! Based on Greek myth and Shakespeare, a whole set of characters have just moved pretty seamlessly from contemporary extreme English wealth to an Ancient Greek adventure. Reminding me a bit of Washington Black but I think I like it more!

I have been feeling poorly for over a week now so am doing nothing this weekend except snuggling and reading 😊🤧🤒😷📚📚📚

Not for me. I did end up liking the ending. But the rest...no thanks.

WanderingBookaneer I‘m at 70% and want to bail. Should I continue? 3mo
Skeeterisme @WanderingBookaneer if you‘re that far in, I say stick with it. But don‘t blame me if you still don‘t like it by the end!! 3mo

I had to double check reviews for this book, Haddon so completely aped a type of prose where men look at woman and respond to their feelings about how those women look, that I thought this had been written in the 1920s. It was delicately done. But the structure of the story lost me. There were mirrored, parallel story elements, greek myths, magic? But at the end, I‘m not sure what point was being made. It felt like a thought experiment.

While I was not completely familiar with the original Greek tragedies, that did not stop me from enjoying this strangely hypnotic weaving of past & present. A pregnant woman dies in a fiery plane crash but not before giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. The father, a multi millionaire, is despondent and clings to his child in an unforgiving manner. When a stranger stumbles upon the situation he sets off a chain of events with epic results.

Cinfhen @divinediana I hope you get to this book soon so we can discuss in person. It‘s a little odd, almost dreamlike in parts but I found it absorbing. Not at all what I was expecting. 5mo
Ms_T Great review and I‘m glad you enjoyed it 😂 5mo
Cinfhen I wasn‘t sure early on if I was going to like it @Ms_T but I‘m glad I read your review!! It helped put the story in proper perspective ♥️ 5mo

Thank you NetGalley and Doubleday for an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book. This was such a unique book. This was two stories of Apollonious and Shakespeare's Pericles. The way Haddon melds these stories and retells this one is quite excellent. I found myself turning the pages quickly, I loved it so much. Wonderful storytelling.

This was quite a strange story and really took some following. I'm not totally sure I fully understood all what was happening. It jumps around an awful lot which left me very confused at times. The basic story with Angelica is quite dark and features some child abuse so a warning to those who may be triggered by that. I enjoyed Marina's story most of all but the rest was a little too rushed for me.

This book really surprised me - I was expecting to dislike it but the story swept me away with its three parallel storylines which take place in the present day, Elizabethan London and mythological Greece. The first chapter was incredibly powerful and the story developed into a tale large and sweeping. This book is very different to anything I‘ve read before, it seems almost experimental, yet for me it works very well ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #NetGalley #ARC

Starting my short working week with this ARC. I requested it without reading the blurb because I loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Now I‘ve read what the book‘s about, I‘m not sure it‘s for me 😳 Hey-ho, lets give it a go!

Cathythoughts That‘s the spirit 👍🏻😁 8mo
