What an amazing story with a VERY satisfying ending- I found myself smiling as I read the last sentence. The book being written from two perspectives (Ruth‘s in the past, Dorothea in the present) is both powerful and immersive. Hearing Ruth‘s story slowly align with Dorothea‘s reality was genius. Every character, no matter how small a part, holds an important role in both protagonists‘ stories. What a wonderful read, cannot recommend enough.

Another great gothic read from this author. I couldn‘t wait to know the ending. This novel was quite dark in some parts, much darker then The Silent Companions ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So good. If you like Alias Grace, this is a book for you. Wealthy & as yet unmarried, much to her father‘s chagrin, Dorothea Truelove devotes herself to her charity work including visiting women in prison. One such visit she meets a young girl accused of murder. What really happened? Can you truly kill with just a needle & thread? Loved this creepy, atmosphere, dark “early Victorian gothic.” Definitely recommended if you like such stories!

This macabre tale with its quirky Victorian characters had an ending I really appreciated. I've always felt there was power in working with one's hands.

Ruth is a talented teenage seamstress who comes to believe that her stitches can carry the power of her intentions, including possibly murder. Dorothea is the young woman who visits Ruth in prison as a charitable act. She‘s really interested in phrenology, which is such a strange thing when viewed through our modern perspective. Her side of the story was not as compelling to me. Pic is our Halloween decorations of my husband walking our dogs 💀

A twenty-five year-old Dorothea thinks she can measure someone‘s personality through phrenology. The stories of both women are twined in this gothic thriller. At times this book was too dark for me. I didn‘t realize there would be so much abuse, but I love this author‘s books.

If you read The Silent Companions and loved it, read this now! A perfect October read. Dark Victorian gothic horror rich in atmosphere with all the mysterious elements. Highly recommend!

The characters are as trite as the premise. The back of the book suggests this is a good fit “For fans of Shirley Jackson,” but they‘d do much better with Jackson, and perhaps some Euripides. Bailed after seven chapters.

I quite enjoyed this! Victorian murder/gothic, reminded me a bit of Affinity by Sarah Waters - do-gooder Victorian lady visiting a prison and finding more than she bargained for.
